In 1939, shortly before the German invasion of Poland, a British emissary, Lord Lothian, visited the White House with an unusual request. The United Kingdom was unable to protect the world from the Nazis, Lothian told President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. “Anglo-Saxon civilization” would thus need a new guardian. The scepter was falling from British hands, Lothian explained, and the United States must “snatch it up.” Though informally made, it was an extraordinary entreaty. London was willing to step aside and let Washington lead the world.

What in hell then is the excuse of the Wall Street Journal (WSJ)? The WSJ just published a deranged piece by a Catholic University Professor, Michael Kimmage, titled — Ignore the Defeatists. America’s Strategy Is Working in Ukraine. I don’t think Professor Kimmage knows the meaning of the word, “working.”

Here is his thesis:

The wave of synchronized pager explosions in Lebanon was “reckless”because the method did not account for potential civilian casualties, Edward Snowden has said. 

At least nine people were killed and some 2,800 injured across Lebanon when handheld pagers used by Hezbollah members simultaneously exploded on Tuesday. The pro-Palestinian militant group has blamed Israel for “sinful aggression” and vowed to retaliate. 

Israel has not acknowledged any involvement in the blasts. The Jewish state, however, has conducted airstrikes against Hezbollah members in the past and threatened more “military action” if the group does not stop its cross-border attacks on Israelis.

Kiev’s president Zelensky tried to calm down his Western patrons claiming that everything is going according to plan in the Kursk region, but the pincer of Russian counteroffensive is shrinking the Ukrainian grouping on Russian territory.

The ABC's director of news has warned that media needs to be "at the top of its collective game" to prevent a flood of misinformation, as he railed against media infighting that could erode "public perception of all news". 

Speaking at the Melbourne Press Club, Justin Stevens said there was a "crisis of trust in media" across Australia and the world.

He noted the ABC remained the most trusted media organisation in the country, according to Roy Morgan research, but the public broadcaster could "never take that for granted". 

"We need to vigorously protect that trust and work every single day to ensure we are worthy of it," Stevens said.

US Big Tech cannot stop RT from making its voice heard, the Russian news outlet proclaimed on Tuesday, following Meta’s decision to ban the network from its platforms.

On Monday, the company behind Facebook and Instagram announced that it would remove several news brands, including RT, from its applications over the coming days. It cited alleged “foreign interference activity” to justify the move, aligning with accusations made last week by the US government.

RT commented on the attack against it by saying the contrast between the West’s declared support for fair competition and the actions aimed at undermining it was “cute.”

There must be a negotiated end to the Ukraine War. The alternative is nuclear armageddon.

The Russian demands are more negotiable than realised. Following the US-backed Maidan coup of 2014, and the subsequent 2014-5 Minsk accords, Russia gained the promise of autonomy for the two Russian-speaking provinces (oblasts) of Lugansk and Donetsk in Donbas, Ukraine.

The fact that Ryan Routh was “an ardent supporter of the Ukraine and wants to see Russia attacked, and clearly saw Trump as a threat to Ukraine's future receipt of US military support,” cannot be hidden, says former US State Department official and retired CIA intelligence officer Larry Johnson.

“I'm sure that the Kiev regime is going to distance itself from this. The Kiev regime, along with the apparent support of the CIA, has put together a death list of Americans. The man behind a botched assassination attempt against Donald Trump at his Florida golf club has been identified as Ryan Wesley Routh by multiple media reports citing anonymous law enforcement sources. Authorities have yet to officially confirm the suspect’s identity.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon while the former US President and Republican presidential candidate was playing golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. A Secret Service agent apparently spotted a rifle barrel sticking through the resort's fence and fired several rounds at the threat. The suspect fled the scene, leaving behind an AK-style rifle with a scope and a GoPro camera, but he was later arrested.

”He was not displaying a lot of emotions. He never asked, ‘What is this about?’” Martin County Sheriff William Snyder told a press conference.

On at least one occasion I have made jokes about Galloway’s tendency to wear a hat indoors, a wide brimmed fedora that places him somewhere between Marlon Brando’s Sky Masterson and Robert Mitchum’s Reverend Harry Powell.

It’s a strong look and one, it turns out, not motivated by sheer vanity. I recently discovered, while watching George chat with his friend Steve Topple online (I live a very full life), that Galloway claims he wears the hat to cover the scars he bears after he was assaulted in 2014 (by one Neil Masterson). If this is true, then frankly, the hat wearing is his business and his alone, though I would add that it’s better at least that he wears a snazzy fedora than a forlorn baseball cap. So, chapeau, George.
