Millions of protestors gathered across the US on Saturday across thousands of events to protest against Donald Trump’s administration in a planned series of events called “No Kings”.
Organized by a coalition of groups, the demonstrations were largely peaceful, though they occurred on the same day Minnesota lawmakers were shot, and one killed, in political violence, and just a week after the federal government ordered military to descend on Los Angeles streets to quell protests there.
The Guardian spoke to dozens of protesters across the country about the mass demonstrations. Here is what they said.
“Other people have the right to work hard and make a life for themselves when they come from a country where they can’t do that or are facing political oppression or are desperate,” he said. “This is supposed to be the land of opportunity and a land built on immigrants.”
“It’s a perverse show of power, unnecessarily,” he said of Trump’s military parade in Washington. “For the most part, the administration is pushing forth an agenda and people have been asleep at the wheel.”

Tens of thousands of lefty “No Kings” protesters took to the streets of New York City and across the country Saturday in a “day of defiance” against President Trump as the US Army held its 250th anniversary military parade in Washington, DC.
There were no indications of significant violence or arrests in the Big Apple, where demonstrations began at around noon time in Queens and later in Brooklyn and Manhattan — where 50,000 showed up, police sources said. “No Kings” organizers claimed that “millions participated nationally,” though The Post couldn’t independently verify that stat.” There were some eight arrests, sources said.
“I just came out because I see a lot of things happening in the country that are really scary,” Lisa Doula, 53, who lives in Jersey City, told The Post from Bryant Park.

Ahead of Israel’s attacks on Iran, US intelligence assessed that Iran was not pursuing nuclear weapons and that even if it chose to do so, it would take up to three years away for Tehran to be able to produce and deliver a nuclear bomb against a target of its choosing, CNN reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the intelligence.
The US assessment goes against the claims from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who launched the war under the pretext of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. But President Trump appears to be taking Israel’s word over his own intelligence agencies, as he told reporters that he didn’t care about his director of national intelligence’s assessment on the issue.
In March, DNI Tulsi Gabbard said that “Iran is not building a nuclear weapon and Supreme Leader Khamenei has not authorized the nuclear weapons program he suspended in 2003.” Her assessment was reflected in the Intelligence Community’s annual threat assessment.
When asked about this assessment, President Trump said, “I don’t care what she said. I think they’re very close to having [a nuclear weapon].”
Netanyahu claimed in an interview on Sunday that he shared intelligence with the US that Iran could have developed a nuclear weapon within months or a year, although that was not the conclusion of US intelligence agencies, based on the CNN report. But even based on Netanyahu’s own timeline, the US would have had time to continue negotiations with Iran.
Israel attacked Iran two days before another round of negotiations between the US and Iran was set to be held. Trump had been demanding that Iran eliminate its nuclear weapons program, which was a non-starter for Tehran. Despite the apparent impasse, Iran was set to present a counter-proposal to the US, but the talks were canceled after Israel launched its war.
