Vladimir Zelensky expects Ukraine to be able to fight Russia for up to three more years, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has told The Sunday Times. The Ukrainian leader’s reported remark comes as the EU is looking for new ways to fund Kiev, eyeing Russia’s frozen central-bank assets as an option. 

In an interview with the British newspaper on Saturday, Tusk quoted Zelensky as saying that “he hopes that the war will not last ten years, but that Ukraine is ready to fight for another two, three years.” Should the conflict with Russia drag on longer, Zelensky is “anxious about the toll the war would take on its population and economy,” the Polish prime minister said.

On Tuesday, the Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that “Ukraine has serious financial problems.” The outlet wrote, citing anonymous EU sources, that Kiev only has enough money to stay afloat “until the end of the first quarter of 2026.” 

On Wednesday, the Ukrainian parliament passed a draft budget for 2026, which runs a deficit of over 58%.

In recent weeks, EU leaders have intensified discussions over a so-called “reparations loan” of up to €140 billion ($163 billion) for which the frozen Russian assets would serve as collateral. Under the scheme, Ukraine would be required to repay the loan only if Moscow compensates it for damages inflicted during the conflict. 

The bloc has already tapped into the revenues generated by the immobilized Russian assets. 

Moscow has described this as “theft” and has vowed to retaliate. 
Following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, the US and EU blocked an estimated $300 billion in Russian assets – some €200 billion ($213 billion) of which is being held by the Brussels-based clearinghouse Euroclear. 

Belgium has repeatedly objected to the proposed plan, demanding that the risk be shared among all EU members in case the scheme backfires. On Thursday, Prime Minister Bart De Wever told reporters that his country’s concerns have not been adequately addressed.

Encircled Ukrainian units ‘being destroyed’ – Russian military
Over 10,000 soldiers are trapped in two separate pockets, according to Moscow’s estimates

 

Russian forces are continuing operations to eliminate Ukrainian troops trapped in two encircled pockets on the front line, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said on Monday.

The ministry reported that Ukrainian forces near Kupyansk made three unsuccessful attempts to break through the Russian blockade, suffering losses of up to 50 soldiers and six pieces of heavy equipment. In a separate area near Krasnoarmeysk (also known as Pokrovsk), another 60 Ukrainian servicemen were reportedly killed, while two armored vehicles and three cars were destroyed.

At a high-level military meeting on Sunday, Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov informed President Vladimir Putin that approximately 5,000 Ukrainian soldiers were surrounded near Kupyansk and another 5,500 near Krasnoarmeysk.

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has rejected Russia’s assertions, calling them “fake news meant for the United States.” Kiev insists that its troops remain combat-capable and that Russian advances don’t pose a threat for a strategic breakthrough.

Zelensky has repeatedly dismissed reports of major Ukrainian setbacks while appealing to Western donors for additional funding and arms. Meanwhile, Ukrainian soldiers and officers interviewed by local and Western outlets have accused the government of ordering them to hold untenable positions for political reasons rather than military necessity.

Ukraine lacks the strength to reconquer territories lost to Russia, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has said. He added that Moscow will in any case never relinquish the territories. 

Crosetto discussed the issue in an interview with Bruno Vespa, featured in the journalist’s new book set for release this week. In the conversation, Crosetto laid out his view that the situation on the ground leaves no realistic path for Ukraine to reclaim its former regions. 

“To reconquer the territories lost in 2014 and after February 2022 is today considered impossible by everyone,” Crosetto told Vespa, as quoted by ANSA news agency. “Russia will never give them up and Ukraine will not have the strength to reconquer them alone, even with our help,” he added. 

Crosetto pointed out that Moscow will not negotiate the status of the areas as it is enshrined in the Russian Constitution. 

Ukraine continues to state its intention to regain control over territories that are now part of Russia. Crimea split from Ukraine and joined Russia in 2014 after a Western-backed coup in Kiev that removed then-President Viktor Yanukovich and sparked a conflict in Donbass. In 2022, the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics in Donbass, along with Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions, similarly voted to join Russia in referendums.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described the areas as “ancestral Russian land” and said their people had “independently and freely chosen to join Russia.” Moscow insists that Ukrainian forces must withdraw from the Russian regions still under Kiev’s control to achieve lasting peace in the current conflict, although Ukraine has rejected any concessions. 

Ukrainian forces have been losing ground for months as Russia pushes deeper into Donbass and Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhye regions. Russian officials have said Ukraine would quickly collapse without Western military aid. Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has denied reports of serious setbacks while urging Western backers for more weapons and aid. 

Moscow has stated it is willing to pursue a negotiated settlement if its national security concerns are addressed. Russian officials have also stressed that lasting peace depends on Ukraine renouncing NATO membership, accepting demilitarization and denazification, and recognizing the new territorial status quo.

Kupyansk & Pokrovsk ‘Doomed' as Russia Poises to Push Forward

Zelensky won’t order his encircled troops to lay down arms in Kupyank and Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk) — their fate is sealed, believes military expert and retired colonel Anatoliy Matviychuk. These soldiers are "doomed" either to captivity or death, while Russia’s forces advance deeper toward Dnepropetrovsk, Kramatorsk and Slavyansk.

The fall of Kupyank and Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk) totally dismantles Zelensky as a credible politician, exposing the lies he peddled to his Western sponsors, Anatoliy Matviychuk, who has experience in combat operations in Afghanistan and Syria, told Sputnik.

Zelensky has been spinning the story that he’s in full control, making gains, liberating territory, and that Russians are surrendering by the millions.

Admitting the encirclement would mean admitting the territory is lost, says the pundit. After hawking one fake narrative after another, Zelensky now faces a massive credibility hit.

“Losing this territory means losing control of the situation. In short, he stops looking like an honest politician to the West,” says the analyst.

If US President Donald Trump, to whom Zelensky recently showcased maps of the new 'counteroffensive,' realizes he deliberately lied to secure money and Tomahawks, “he could simply order key figures like Rubio and Witkoff to cut political ties with Zelensky and stop aiding Ukraine,” Anatoliy Matviychuk underscored.
