the US and the EU have agreed on a new trade deal....

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United States and the European Union have agreed on a new trade deal, which envisages, among other things, a zero tariff on US imports to the European markets and a 15% baseline tariff on all EU goods coming to the US, including cars, US President Donald Trump said on Sunday.

"I just want to congratulate you. I think it is great that we made a deal today instead of playing games and maybe not making a deal at all … I think it is the biggest deal ever made," Trump said at a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland.

Under the new deal, the EU agrees to purchase $750 billion worth of energy from the United States and "a vast amount" of military equipment, Trump said. The EU will invest an additional $600 billion in the US economy and open up the countries' markets to trade with the US at zero tariffs.

f**ked!

The United States and the European Union on Sunday reached a trade deal, ending a months-long standoff.

"We have reached a deal. It's a good deal for everybody," US President Donald Trump told reporters after talks with the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland.

"We have a trade deal between the two largest economies in the world. And it's a big deal. It's a huge deal," said von der Leyen, who was seeking to finalize an agreement with Washington before the August 1 deadline.

"It will bring stability, it will bring predictability. That's very important for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic," she added.

Ahead of the crunch talks, Trump gave "a good 50-50 chance" on Friday for a deal to be reached with the European Union.

What's in the EU-US trade deal?

"We are agreeing that the tariff straight across, for automobiles and everything else, will be a straight across tariff of 15%," according to Trump. Currently, most EU goods face a 10% tariff, with levies of 25% on cars and car parts.

But the rate would not apply to steel and aluminum, which are being taxed at 50%.

Trump also said the bloc had agreed to purchase "$750 billion (€638 billion) worth of energy" from the US, as well as $600 billion more in additional investments.

"Purchases of US energy products will diversify our sources of supply and contribute to Europe's energy security. We will replace Russian gas and oil by significant purchases of US LNG, oil and nuclear fuels," von der Leyen told reporters.

She added that the baseline tariff rate of 15% on imported EU goods would apply to cars, semiconductors and pharmaceutical goods.

At the start of the meeting, Trump said that "fairness" was the main remaining sticking point.

"Europe is very closed. We don't sell cars into Europe. We don't sell essentially agriculture of any great degree," he said.

although.....

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the agreement on the introduction of a 15 percent duty on exports from the EU to the United States, but admitted that he expected big eases as a result of the deal, his words are quoted in a press release of the Cabinet of Ministers of the country.

Earlier, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, following talks with American leader Donald Trump in Scotland, confirmed an agreement to impose a 15 percent duty on almost all exports from the EU to the United States.

"We managed to protect our key interests, although I certainly counted on further easing in transatlantic trade. Stable and predictable trade relations with mutual access to markets benefit everyone on both sides of the Atlantic, both companies and consumers," Merz said.

He welcomed the agreement between von der Leyen and Trump, noting that with the help of the deal it was possible to avoid "unnecessary escalation" in transatlantic trade relations.

a bad deal...

The leader of the parliamentary faction of the French right-wing party National Rally, Marine Le Pen, called the trade deal between the European Union and the United States a political, economic and moral fiasco for the European Union.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump reached a trade deal on July 27, according to which almost all EU exports to the US would now be subject to tariffs of 15%. In addition, the European Union has committed to purchasing LNG, nuclear fuel and weapons from the United States.

"The trade agreement concluded by Ursula von der Leyen with Donald Trump is a political, economic and moral fiasco," Le Pen said on social media.

Le Pen explained that the European Union had concluded the agreement on unequal terms with the United States and on less favorable terms than the UK. She compared the deal to capitulation for French industry, as well as its energy and military sectors.

In June, Trump announced a "full and comprehensive" trade agreement between the United States and Great Britain, which would cement the relationship between the two countries. As a result of the deal, American tariffs on some British goods were reduced to 10%, while on others they were completely abolished.

On April 2, the US leader signed an executive order introducing "reciprocal" tariffs on imports from other countries. Their basic rate was 10%, and for 57 countries, increased rates were applied from April 9, which were calculated based on the United States' trade deficit with a specific country: so that there would be a balance instead of a deficit.

However, on April 9, Trump announced that more than 75 countries had not taken retaliatory measures and had requested negotiations, so for 90 days, that is, until July 9, basic import tariffs of 10% came into effect for them. In anticipation of this date, the president extended the suspension of increased import duties on foreign goods until August 1 and sent notifications to several countries about increasing their tariffs from this date.

On July 12, Trump said that the United States would introduce 30% tariffs on goods from the European Union from August 1, while previously introduced sectoral tariffs would remain in force. In his letter addressed to the head of the European Commission, it is noted that the United States will add "this number" to its 30% tariffs if the EU wants to increase its tariffs on US goods. On the same day, von der Leyen said that the EU would continue negotiations with the United States, but was ready to introduce countermeasures from August 1 if they failed.
