in the footsteps of muddy history....

Immediately after the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime, on the night of Saturday 7 to Sunday 8 December, it was learned that the Israeli air force had bombed 310 targets in Syria.

These targets were airports, planes, helicopters, ammunition depots, chemical weapons stockpiles, anti-aircraft batteries, chemical weapons production plants, ports, ships, command centres, tanks, etc.

At the same time, the American air force struck 75 targets in Syria, using B-52s (strategic bombers), A-10s (ground support aircraft) and F-15s (fighter-bombers). That is to say, a full range of aircraft.

Note 1. These bombings took place without opposition, because the Syrian army had vanished in the face of the advance of the rebels against the regime and because the latter, on the one hand, did not have the means to retaliate, and on the other hand, had other things to do: basically, consolidate their victory.

Note 2. These bombings, curiously, did not target an enemy entity (since the regime had stopped fighting) but rather equipment or materials. And, on the other hand, they did not target the rebels either, since the latter, objectively, favored the designs of the Israelis and the Americans - by ridding them of a strategic adversary - because it was allied with Russia and Iran.

Note 3. These bombings (presented as "preventive") were intended to prevent Bashar al-Assad's weapons from being used by potential future adversaries (Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda).

Note 4. This "preventive" attack is reminiscent of a similar attack carried out more than 84 years ago: that of the French fleet by the British fleet, from 3 to 6 July 1940, in the harbor of Mers-el-Kébir, in Algeria. This attack took place barely two weeks after the armistice of 22 June 1940, because Churchill feared that the French fleet would fall into German hands.

Note 5. For the price of 2 sailors killed and 2 planes shot down, the British sank a French battleship, damaged two other battleships and a destroyer and, above all, killed nearly 1,300 French soldiers and sailors.

Note 6. The British attack of 1940, like the Israeli-American attacks of 2024, have this in common that they took place entirely outside the law (without a declaration of war, without a resolution from an international body, such as the UN or the League of Nations), against countries (France in one case, Syria in the other) that had done nothing to them.
