40 nations 'strongly condemn' attacks on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon

The UK is among 40 nations to "strongly condemn" attacks on United Nations (UN) peacekeepers in Lebanon.

On Thursday, two Indonesian peacekeepers were injured falling from an observation tower after Israeli tanks fired towards it.

On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged that its troops were responsible for an incident in which two Sri Lankan soldiers, in Naqoura, were injured and that it would be investigated

And the United Nations, on Saturday, said another peacekeeper was injured by gunfire in the south on Friday, though added it did not know the origin of the fire.

In a joint statement posted on X, external by the Polish UN mission, the countries say attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) "must stop immediately and should be adequately investigated".

"We consider Unifil's role as particularly crucial in light of the escalating situation in the region," the statement adds.

We're now pausing our live coverage. Here are the main stories from the Middle East today.

  • The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) has said the main gate of one of its positions has been "destroyed" by two Israeli tanks.
  • 15 peacekeepers have reportedly been injured by smoke from rounds fired by Israeli tanks following the incident, the statement said, which took place in the early hours of Sunday morning.
  • The clash follows the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's latest demand that the UN withdraw its peacekeeping force from southern Lebanon, where several members of the multinational force have been injured in recent days
  • In a speech posted to social media, Netanyahu said Unifil must to withdraw from the area, claiming its forces were being used as "hostages" by Hezbollah
  • Meanwhile, the US says it will send fresh air defence batteries to Israel to shield it from what te Pentagon called "unprecedented attacks"
  • Elsewhere, in Gaza, images this morning showed displaced Palestinians fleeing the north with evacuation orders issued for the area over the last week. In a statement this morning, the IDF said it attacked 40 targets in the Gaza Strip in the preceding 24 hours.
  • According to the daily update from the Hamas-run health ministry, at least 42,227 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 7 last year.

We'll be pausing our coverage shortly but you can read further analysis of the situation in northern Gaza and more on Unifil's statement in our news story.

The Biden administration will temporarily send a ground-based interceptor to Israel which will help shoot down ballistic missiles, a US official confirms to the BBC's US partner CBS News.

This anti-missile system is described as a way to “strengthen Israel’s defences against ballistic missiles” and any “future ballistic missile attack from Iran”.

The US previously sent a Thaad defence system to the Middle-East after the Hamas-led October 7 attacks. It also sent the system to Israel in 2019 for military exercises.

skirmish-ish....

Germany's international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle (DW), denounced Sunday what it said was a "disgusting act of violence," after one of its reporters was allegedly attacked on the sidelines of a concert in the western German city of Dusseldorf this weekend.

DW Arabic reporter Adonis Alkhaled said he was assaulted and beaten by security staff after conducting an interview with the Syrian musician Al Shami.

A spokesperson for Al Shami insisted the "interview proceeded smoothly without any issues," and claimed that the violent incident took place after the musician and his crew had left.

What happened to Adonis Alkhaled?

In a press statement issued Sunday, DW gave Alkhaled's account of the events which took place at the Mitsubishi Electric Hall in Dusseldorf late Friday and early Saturday.

During the video interview with the Syrian artist, the DW journalist said he and a colleague were threatened and insulted by security personnel.

Alkhaled also said he was called a "faggot," and that derogatory remarks were repeatedly made about Deutsche Welle.

After the two DW journalists terminated the interview due to security concerns, reporter Adonis Alkhaled was allegedly pushed out of the interview area into a backyard by several members of the security team.

Alkhaled was hit by a lone attacker several times, according to the DW press release. The reporter was taken to the emergency room immediately afterward.

He was able to leave the hospital on Saturday morning and has filed a criminal complaint.

A police investigation into the attack is underway.

DW said video footage of the incident "is to be secured and evaluated."

Al Shami 'condemns' violence against journalists

When contacted by DW, the artist's press spokesperson said: "Al Shami and his management unequivocally condemn any form of violence or threats, especially against journalists."

"The events you’ve described are reported to have taken place after the interview had ended and after our team had parted ways with your crew," they said.

"We sincerely apologize for any unfortunate incident that occurred and are fully committed to helping you investigate this matter further."

The organizers of the "Luxus Event" concert have not yet responded to DW's questions.

DW condemns 'attack on freedom of the press'

In the statement issued Sunday, DW Director General Peter Limbourg said he strongly condemned the attack.

"This crime is not only a disgusting act of violence, but also an attack on freedom of the press. The perpetrators and instigators must feel the full force of the rule of law."

"The solidarity of all DW employees goes out to our injured colleague," he added.

Alkhaled says organizer and artist should ensure safety

Reacting to his ordeal, Alkhaled said: "Journalists must be able to do their work without threats or violence in order to inform the public objectively and independently. Such attacks endanger this fundamental right and hinder the work of the press."

Alkhaled added that both the organizer and the artist are responsible for the actions of their staff and security forces.

"They have a duty of care to ensure that everyone involved, including the press, is treated safely and respectfully. The incident indicates a management failure, as the security team repeatedly acted aggressively without taking adequate measures to de-escalate."

The reporter said it was important that attacks like the one he experienced don't go unpunished.

"Otherwise, this could set a dangerous precedent where other organizers or artists believe they can act similarly aggressively against journalists," Alkhaled said. "Legal action and public criticism can make it clear that this behavior will not be tolerated and that it has clear consequences."

Open Letter to Antonio Guterres on the Australian Government’s failure to publicly defend the office of the United Nations Secretary General.

Antonio Guterres,

Secretary General of the United Nations

UN Plaza, NEW YORK USA

Email undesa@un.org

Dear Sir,

We write in shame that the Australian Government has failed to join over 100 Member states who have signed an Open Letter to you as Secretary General after you were declared persona non grata by the Foreign Minister of Israel.

We want you to know that the Australian Government’s failure to demonstrate its commitment to your position does not reflect the views of a majority of Australians who value and respect your role and the work of the United Nations to strengthen global understanding and cooperation.

We are distressed that the repeated violations of international law by the government of Israel and its military in Gaza, the Occupied Territories and Lebanon have not been denounced by the Australian Government and some other states.

We welcome the initiative of Chile and all those nations which have clearly articulated their support for you, and we regret that the Australian Government has failed to join them at a time when it is so important for nations to uphold the essential role of the United Nations in advocating for international law to build global peace and security.

Furthermore, we are deeply disturbed that five members of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon have been injured and we will be urging our government to condemn this breach of international law.

Thank you for your continued efforts to provide humanitarian support and a negotiated ceasefire.

Postscript

This letter is the immediate reaction of distinguished Australians, who hope many more will express their outrage that the State of Israel continues to ignore the United Nations, breach its charter and attack its personnel.

It is time the Australian Government stood up to Israel to demand a halt to all military violence and offered its full support to the United Nations and the Office of the Secretary General.

unconfirmed death....

Rumors of the death of IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi have spread widely on social media, following a Hezbollah drone attack that struck Israel near the Binyamina area on Sunday evening.

Reports about Halevi began spreading quickly after the attack, which left more than 60 injured, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Reportedly, “Halevy assassination reports” began circulating on X shortly after the attack, with X accounts with large followings beginning to share their theories about Halevy’s death.

Dr. Anastasia Maria Lopes, a verified social media personality with over a million followers, posted that Halevi's death had been confirmed.

"Initial reports confirm the assassination of the Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army, Herzi Halevi," Lopes wrote with a picture of Halevi.

American commentator Jackson Hinkle posted on the X website that Halevi had been assassinated, according to unconfirmed reports.

Henkel, who has more than two million followers on the X platform, added that the assassination of the chief of staff was carried out using “advanced drones.”

Additionally, the verified account SilencedSirs posted an image of a drawing that showed senior Israeli military and government leaders with a large red X over Halevi's face, appearing under the word "eliminated."

Meanwhile, researcher and journalist Suleiman Ahmed, who has more than half a million followers, shared the inaccurate news about Halevi’s killing, attributing the credit to “unconfirmed reports.”

A year of unhinged Israeli atrocities in Gaza      by Viktor Mikhin

The unconditional military and diplomatic support of Israel from many Western countries has exacerbated internal divisions in the UN Security Council and seriously affected its ability to act.

Palestinians and pro-Palestinian groups are marking the one-year anniversary of the successful military operation carried out by the Hamas resistance movement in southern Israel, launched from the Gaza Strip. Since the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, also known as the Six-Day War, Israel has consistently sought to present itself as a formidable power with an invincible army. However, the skilful attack by Hamas destroyed the idea of the invincibility of the Israeli regime and showed the failure of its notorious Mossad intelligence. Even Western media (including the United States) has admitted that Hamas exposed this lie of the Israeli military. This truth was most vividly illustrated by Le Monde, which wrote at the time that the defence of the Israeli armed forces “collapsed like a house of cards” in the face of the brilliant Hamas operation.Hamas is an idea deeply rooted in the hearts of Gazans

Hamas cannot be destroyed

Since October 7, IDF Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi has spoken of dismantling, rather than eliminating Hamas and this term indirectly recognises that even a protracted war will not be able to destroy the resistance group. In mid-February, Israeli military intelligence assessments showed that even if the regime eliminated the military potential of Hamas, it would still continue to operate in Gaza.

In March, the U.S. intelligence community said in its annual report that Israel was likely to face resistance from Hamas “for years to come”. Many Western officials have also recognised that Israel will not be able to suppress the resistance of the Palestinians, their will to freedom and their desire to create their own State of Palestine. The EU’s foreign policy chief said in February that Israel needed a political, not military, solution to the conflict with the Palestinians. Speaking during a panel discussion on the side-lines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany, Josep Borrel warned that Israel would not be able to defeat Hamas militarily.

Many also note the preposterous failure of the UN. Even Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who was declared persona non grata in Israel, admitted that “we (the UN) have no real power, let’s be honest. The only UN body with some power is the Security Council, but this body is paralysed too”.

A representative of the Israeli armed forces also disputed Netanyahu’s military objective a few months ago. “The idea that Hamas can be destroyed or made to disappear is a spit in the face of the public”, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in an interview with Israeli TV channel 13. He added: “Hamas is an idea deeply rooted in the hearts of Gazans”.

Later, these comments were repeated by Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. Speaking at a closed-door Knesset committee meeting in August, he called Netanyahu’s slogan of complete victory over Hamas “nonsense” and “gibberish”. Gallant also said Netanyahu’s goal of achieving a ‘total victory’ is but empty words.

Israeli society is more widely and actively agreeing with this point of view and, thus, over the past 12 months, protests inside Israel against the regime’s unsuccessful military operation in the Gaza Strip have become commonplace. Protesters have repeatedly called on Netanyahu to conclude a cease-fire agreement with Hamas to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza. Hamas released more than 100 Israeli and foreign prisoners in an exchange with Israel in November. However, many dozens of Israeli hostages died during the carpet bombing by the air force and the responsibility for this rests entirely on Netanyahu and the IDF.

Despite the growing demand within the country to end the conflict, Netanyahu continues to carry out brutal military operations with the tenacity of a maniac, during which many Israeli soldiers and officers also die. According to the Israeli army, 726 soldiers, officers and reservists were killed during the war in Gaza, but these so-called official figures, as is known, must at least be multiplied by two. Bibi is also turning a blind eye to the growing international pressure to end the genocidal war in Gaza, since not only his political career and future trial, but also his very life are at stake.

The Palestinian genocide

The year-long Israeli bloodbath in the Gaza Strip has killed nearly 42,000 Palestinians, including around 17,000 children. According to the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip, more than 97,000 people were injured. However, many tens of thousands more remain unaccounted for, with many Palestinians having died under the rubble of destroyed buildings, many are listed as lost. The Israeli army destroyed most of Gaza, attacked hospitals and people who were sheltering there. It not only bombed, but also carpet-bombed medical centres, which, according to international law, should be protected.

The Israeli regime is also accused of starving the Palestinians, largely restricting the import of humanitarian aid into the territory. The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food said that such Israeli measures are synonymous with war crimes. “Deliberately depriving people of food is certainly a war crime. Israel has announced its intention to destroy the Palestinian people, in whole or in part, simply for being Palestinian. In my opinion, as a UN human rights expert, there is now a situation of genocide. This means that the state of Israel as a whole is guilty and must be held accountable, not just individuals, be it a government or a person”, Michael Fakhri told the English Guardian newspaper in late February. The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court also states that the deliberate starvation of civilians by “depriving them of items necessary for their survival, including intentionally obstructing the supply of humanitarian aid” is a war crime.

Western and Arab States have repeatedly criticised Israel’s brutality in Gaza, but they have been unable or unwilling to take any practical measures to stop the genocide there. The continuous and broad support of the U.S. has given Israel the courage to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza. In addition to the $3.8 bn in military aid that Israel receives annually from the United States, the administration of President Joe Biden has provided billions of dollars’ worth of additional weapons to the regime since the start of the war in Gaza and the U.S. president himself has repeatedly said that the United States will defend Israel and their atrocities in any case. So much for the ‘democratic’ US of A in the role of international terrorists!

The Palestinian willpower cannot be broken

On the first anniversary of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood (October 7, 2024), all Palestinian resistance groups in Gaza issued a joint statement promising to continue the fight against the Israeli occupation. The statement highlights the importance of the operation to draw attention to the problem of Palestine and its people, which, according to many experts, has been ignored in world affairs. This is despite decades of Israeli aggression, settlement expansion and violation of international law in the occupied Palestinian territories. Over the past year, this aggression has increased significantly, which the statement of the Palestinian resistance qualifies as a “Nazi-Zionist occupation”.

229 violations....

Israel attacks the United Nations

by Thierry Meyssan

Contrary to popular belief, the United Nations General Assembly has only accepted Israel’s membership conditionally (resolution 273). However, Tel Aviv has never respected its commitments. It refuses to implement 229 resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly. It has just declared a UN agency a “terrorist organization,” called for its headquarters in New York to be razed, designated its Secretary General António Guterres persona non grata, and has just attacked four times UN peacekeepers in Lebanon (UNIFIL), wounding two blue helmets.

Israel has just attacked a position of the UN peacekeepers in Lebanon. When the British withdrew from Mandatory Palestine (i.e. Palestine placed by the League of Nations under the provisional administration of the United Kingdom) on May 14, 1948, the Zionist General Council, an offshoot of the Haganah (i.e. the main militia of the immigrant Jewish community), unilaterally proclaimed the independence of the State of Israel. It was announced by the chairman of the Jewish Agency (i.e. the executive of the World Zionist Organization).

It is important to note here that the British occupier withdrew from only about a quarter of Mandatory Palestine. It had already officially left the other three quarters, constituting Mandatory Transjordan, the future Jordan.

After a few days of reflection, the United Nations General Assembly decided to recognize the new state, not without having emphasized that in principle, it was not up to a militia, the Haganah, to proclaim a state, even if this proclamation came to fill the void left by the departure of the mandatory authority, that is to say the British. The General Assembly had noted that the proclamation of independence said nothing about the regime of this state (theocracy or republic), nor about its borders. It intended to pursue its plan for the creation of a binational state, both Arab and Jewish, without territorial continuity between the two entities (Jerusalem and Bethlehem having an international status). It had been reassured by the new state’s reference to "complete equality of social and political rights for all citizens without distinction of belief, race and sex."

The day after independence, Egypt, Iraq, Transjordan, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen sent their armies to Palestine. Official history today assures that these six countries (the “Arabs”, understand the “Muslims”) did not accept a Jewish state, while five of them opposed Jewish colonization after British colonization and the sixth supported Israel. Religion was a problem only for Izz al-Din al-Qassam, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Nazi mufti Mohammed Amin al-Husseini. Identicaly, propaganda assures that these armies were defeated by the valiant Israeli army, implying “from the first day, the Jews are morally superior to the Arabs”. The reality was quite different. The world war had just ended and none of these countries, except Transjordan, had an army worthy of the name. Their troops were exclusively formed of volunteers. In addition, the Transjordanian army, which ended the conflict, fought on the side of Israel against the other Arabs. Indeed, Transjordan, still under British influence, hoped to prevent the creation of a Palestinian state and annex its territory. Its army was none other than that of the British (the "Arab Legion") and was still placed under the command of General John Bagot Glubb (alias "Glubb Pasha"). It was the Transjordanians (in fact the British) and not the Israelis who defeated the other Arab armies.

During the conflict, its sovereign, King Abdullah I was also proclaimed "King of Palestine." During this conflict, the Israeli forces let the British of Transjordan fight against the Arabs and applied Plan D (in Hebrew: Plan "Dalet"). The Haganh intended to share as little territory as possible with Transjordan. Israeli forces illegally imported weapons from Czechoslovakia (already ruled by the communists), probably with the agreement of the USSR, supposedly to fight against British colonization, in reality to expel the Palestinians. This is the Nakhba (catastrophe). 750,000 Palestinians (between 50 and 80% of the population) were forcibly displaced.

Israel requested and obtained, the following year, its membership in the United Nations. At that time, no decolonized state was part of it. The countries under Anglo-Saxon influence were in the majority. However, they only accepted Israel under conditions. In its resolution 273, the UN General Assembly referred to a written commitment by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the provisional government of Israel, Moshe Shertok, by which he "accepts without any reservation the obligations arising from the Charter of the United Nations and undertakes to observe them from the day it becomes a Member of the United Nations" [1].

To date, Israel has failed to uphold this commitment and has failed to comply with 229 Security Council and General Assembly resolutions. Its membership could therefore be suspended at any time.

In recent months,

• Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on March 23 that the UN had become “an anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli organization that harbors and encourages terrorism.”
• Israel has campaigned against a UN agency, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), accusing it of serving Hamas. Last July, the Knesset passed three laws (1) banning UNRWA from operating on Israeli territory (2) stripping its staff of diplomatic immunities (3) declaring it a terrorist organization.
• Israel’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, declared at the end of his term last August, speaking from the UN headquarters in New York, that “this edifice must be razed from the face of the Earth.”
• Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz declared UN Secretary-General António Guterres persona non grata.
• The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) deliberately targeted French, Italian and Irish soldiers of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The bottom line:
• Israel was not created by its people, but by its army.
• The first Arab-Israeli war was not won by the Israelis, but by the Arabs of Transjordan under British command.
• By joining the United Nations, Israel committed itself to respecting all its resolutions, which it has violated 229 times.
• After Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Iran, the Netanyahu government has opened an eighth front against the United Nations.

not god's creation.....

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should not forget his country was created as a result of a resolution adopted by the United Nations, French President Emmanuel Macron told cabinet on Tuesday, urging Israel to abide by UN decisions.

Tensions have increased between Netanyahu and Macron with the French leader last week insisting that stopping the export of weapons used by Israel in Gaza and Lebanon was the only way to stop the conflicts.

France has also repeatedly denounced Israeli fire against UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, who include a French contingent.

“Mr Netanyahu must not forget that his country was created by a decision of the UN,” Macron told the weekly French cabinet meeting, referring to the resolution adopted in November 1947 by the United Nations General Assembly on the plan to partition Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state.

“Therefore this is not the time to disregard the decisions of the UN,” he added, as Israel wages a ground offensive against the Iran-backed Shiitemilitant group Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, where the UN peacekeepers are deployed.

His comments from the closed door meeting at the Elysee Palace were quoted by a participant who spoke to AFP and asked not to be named.

UN Security Council Resolution 1701 states that only the Lebanese army and the UN peacekeeping mission UNIFIL should be deployed in southern Lebanon.

Netanyahu on Sunday called on the UN to move the 10,000 strong peacekeeping force, who include 700 French troops, deployed in south Lebanon out of “harm’s way”, saying Hezbollah was using them as “human shields”.
