Australia is promising $250 million worth of military aid for Ukraine, the largest single package it has provided for the country's defence against Russia to date.

NATO allies are also pledging more support, and calling on China to cease being an enabler of Russia's war.

Australia will provide guided and air defence missiles, anti-tank weapons and ammunition. A "small number" of Australian personnel will join a NATO command for Ukraine.

The Australian government is set to give Ukraine another $250 million in military support — its largest contribution to the war effort since Russia invaded. 

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles announced the package on the final day of the NATO summit in Washington DC.

The event, which has been taking place against a backdrop of turbulence in American politics, has been largely focused on bolstering support for Ukraine.

But Australia and other non-member partners from Asia-Pacific nations have sent delegations to strengthen ties with the alliance amid fears about Chinese aggression in the region.

NATO has also accused China of being a "decisive enabler" of Russia's ongoing invasion, and called on Beijing to stop supplying weapons components, and other material and political support.

"The PRC [People's Republic of China] cannot enable the largest war in Europe in recent history without this negatively impacting its interests and reputation," a summit declaration issued by NATO leaders says.

Mr Marles met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the event, along with US President Joe Biden, the prime ministers of New Zealand and Japan, and the president of South Korea.

"When we witnessed, a few years ago, a no-limits agreement being signed between China and Russia on the eve of Russia's illegal invasion in Ukraine … the events of eastern Europe became fundamentally important to us," Mr Marles said at a meeting of the Asia-Pacific leaders.

The summit declaration says NATO allies "remain open to constructive engagement" with China. 

"At the same time, we are boosting our shared awareness, enhancing our resilience and preparedness, and protecting against the PRC's coercive tactics and efforts to divide the alliance," it says.

Russia's attacks on Ukraine in recent days have included the bombing of the main children's hospital in Kyiv, which killed dozens of people.

MEANWHILE: 

Five children in a Russian town near the border with Ukraine were injured when a Ukrainian drone dropped an explosive on the courtyard where they were playing, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Thursday.

The attack happened in Shebekino, a town in Belgorod Region north of Volchansk, the site of heavy fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces in Kharkov Region since May.

“An explosive device was deliberately dropped from a drone into the courtyard of an apartment building,” Gladkov said on Telegram. “There were no military installations at the site and no soldiers, but five boys, one of whom was only 8 years old.”

Two of the boys suffered serious injuries and were urgently evacuated to a regional hospital. Local paramedics rendered first aid to the other three, before sending them to the hospital as well.

NATO's Washington Summit declaration mentioned China a total of fourteen times, labeling the Asian nation as a "challenge" to the alliance's "interests, security and values." The statement is another sign that the sun is setting on the West's unipolar moment, veteran geopolitical analyst and former US Marine Brian Berletic told Sputnik.

Beijing has lashed out at NATO over its attempts to "provoke confrontation" after the bloc labeled China a security "challenge" and "decisive enabler" of Moscow in the ongoing Russia-NATO proxy war in Ukraine.

"NATO should stop hyping up the so-called China threat and provoking confrontation and rivalry, and do more to contribute to world peace and stability," a spokesperson from China's diplomatic mission in the European Union said in a statement Thursday.

Emphasizing that China was "not the creator of the Ukraine crisis" and that the PRC's position on the crisis "is open and aboveboard," the spokesperson suggested that "instead of scapegoating others, NATO should reflect on itself, take real actions to defuse the situation and solve the problem."

The spokesperson called on NATO to halt a creeping expansion into Asia, saying the bloc "should not become the disruptor of peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region," or serve as a "tool used by certain powers to maintain hegemony."

 

 

"NATO should stop hyping up the so-called China threat and provoking confrontation and rivalry, and do more to contribute to world peace and stability," the statement concluded.

 

The response followed the publication of NATO's official Washington Summit Declaration on Wednesday, where China was mentioned over a dozen times, and slammed over its "'no-limits' partnership" with Russia, and the "systemic challenges to Euro-Atlantic security" supposedly posed by the Asian giant. 

According to the alliance, "the deepening strategic partnership between Russia and the PRC and their mutually reinforcing attempts to undercut and reshape the rules-based international orders" has been "cause for profound concern."

Russia will calmly prepare a military response to US plans to station long-range missiles in Germany, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Thursday.

Washington announced plans on Wednesday to start deploying long-range weapons in Germany in 2026, including SM-6 and Tomahawk systems, “as part of planning for enduring stationing of these capabilities in the future.”

The latest American plans are just another escalation of tensions by the West and “one of the elements of intimidation, which today is almost the main component of the NATO and US” approach towards Russia, Ryabkov said.

Land-based missiles with a range between 500km and 5,500km were banned on European soil under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty, signed by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987. In 2019, the US pulled out of the Cold War-era pact, accusing Moscow of having violated it.

Ryabkov said deploying US missiles to Germany is primarily aimed at damaging Russia’s security.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Ukrainian armed forces have lost up to 700 soldiers in battles with Russia’s Battlegroup Yug in the past 24 hours, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

"The Ukrainian armed forces have lost up to 700 servicepeople, a tank, two Kozak armored combat vehicles, two cars, a UK-made 155-mm AS-90 self-propelled artillery unit, four 152-mm D-20 guns, two 122-mm D-30 howitzers, a US-made 105-mm M119 gun, two UK-made howitzers L-119," the ministry said.

Russia's Battlegroup Tsentr have repelled five Ukrainian counterattacks and taken control of the Voskhod settlement in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), the ministry said. 

"Enemy losses amounted to up to 335 military personnel, two infantry fighting vehicles, including a US-made Bradley BMP, two cars, a 152-mm Msta-B howitzer, a US-made 105-mm M119 gun, four 100-mm MT-12 Rapier guns, a US-made counter-battery radar station TPQ-36," the statement read.

Ukraine has lost up to 460 soldiers in battles with Russia's Battlegroup Zapad and another 335 in fighting with Russia's Sever (North) group of forces, the ministry said.
