consolation prizes: killing civilians and burning bridges while demolishing buildings during retreat....

Ukrainian shelling has left nine civilians dead and more than a dozen injured in the Russian city of Donetsk, according to the Joint Center for Control and Coordination (JCCC) monitoring group. Residential areas were hit by fire from multiple rocket launchers, with a passenger bus being destroyed and a local hospital suffering damage.

“Today, the central districts of the capital of the republic were subjected to another brutal shelling by the armed units of Ukraine,” Denis Pushilin, the interim head of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), wrote in a Telegram post. According to the official, Ukrainian forces targeted a local hospital, an urban park, and several residential buildings.

At least seven fatalities resulted from the destruction of the bus, including one child. The vehicle apparently suffered a direct, or a very close hit, bursting into in flames, footage from the scene has shown. All of the passengers on board were said to have been killed, and the vehicle completely burned out.

Ukrainian forces also directly struck the Donetsk traumatology center, inflicting material damage on the DPR’s only magnetic resonance imaging scanner, the local health ministry told TASS.

The shelling also damaged and partially destroyed multiple residential houses across the city. Nineteen civilians received injuries of varying severity and were hospitalized, according to local officials. Later in the day, the JCCC provided a revised tally of the shelling, stating that a total of nine civilians were killed and 16 injured in the attacks on the city.

Formerly part of Ukraine, the DPR was incorporated into Russia last October together with the People’s Republic of Lugansk (LPR) and Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions. The areas joined Russia following referendums in which the local populations overwhelmingly backed the move.

FROM THE ABC

Ukraine says it is nearly ready to launch a huge ground assault to retake occupied land, after Russian missiles struck cities as people slept, killing at least 25 civilians in its first large-scale air strikes in nearly two months.

Key points:
  • Kyiv will use hundreds of Western tanks and armoured vehicles when it launches its counterattack
  • Russia hit a residential building in Ukraine with a missile, while Kyiv's forces struck a minibus carrying civilians
  • Vladimir Putin signed new laws to increase jail terms for several offences including terrorism and sabotage

The war is coming to a crucial juncture after a months-long Russian winter offensive that gained little ground despite the bloodiest fighting so far.

Kyiv is preparing a counteroffensive using hundreds of tanks and armoured vehicles sent by the West.

It wants to drive Russia out of the nearly one fifth of Ukraine that it occupies and claims to have annexed.

"As soon as there is God's will, the weather and a decision by commanders, we will do it," Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleskii Reznikov told an online news briefing.

Ukraine was "to a high percentage ready", he said, with new modern weapons to provide an "iron fist".

AND SO SAID THE LITTLE HITLER, VOLODYMYR ZELENSKYYYYYYYYY....

BUT ACCORDING TO OTHER NEWS, ZELEDYMORSKYYYY DID IT:

by Christelle Nil

On April 11, 2023, in Artiomovsk (Bakhmout) Ukrainian forces blew up a building and its cellar where 17 civilians were. Seven including a child will be killed in the explosion. Miraculously, Yulia, her husband, and their two children, the youngest of whom was only two days old, survived.

When I enter the hospital room where Yulia is, the latter is feeding her newborn, Marik, born on April 9, 2023 in the basement of their building in Artiomovsk. The conditions under which Yulia gave birth to Marik were nightmarish. Although the bombardments miraculously stopped during childbirth, she had to give birth to her second son in the cellar, in catastrophic hygienic conditions.

Moreover, the little food she had available during her pregnancy was not of good quality (the humanitarian aid provided by Ukraine being absolutely ridiculous in this area), causing serious deficiencies. Result, Ioulia must stay in the hospital to be treated, leaving her first son to his mother and her husband.

Yulia is very pale, and seems very frail at first sight after all this, and I'm afraid she won't be able to give me an interview. But despite everything she's been through, she finds the strength to tell me what she experienced in Artiomovsk during the past year.

Her family did not want to leave Artyomovsk for Ukrainian territory, because Yulia's husband knew that he would immediately be forcibly conscripted into the Ukrainian army, which he categorically refused. So they stayed, and then Yulia found out she was pregnant, as the fighting got closer to town.

She then explains to me that the Ukrainian army did not wait for the Russian forces to approach Artiomovsk to bombard the city! So, in March 2022, she saw rockets fired by the Ukrainian armed forces flying overhead against the center of Artyomovsk and Zabakhmoutka. These bombardments continued into the spring and summer of 2022, when Russian forces were still far from the city.

The New York Philharmonic Orchestra has quietly announced a complete change in the program for the May 10-12 performances at its newly renovated Geffen Hall at the city’s Lincoln Center arts complex. Russian conductor Tugan Sokhiev was originally scheduled to lead the famous Leningrad Symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich. The Leningrad has been cancelled and Sokhiev will not be on the podium. He is being replaced by James Gaffigan, in a program including a work by the Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov, along with Prokofiev’s Third Symphony and Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto.

A few months ago, the Philharmonic box office was still selling tickets for the May concerts that were clearly marked “Leningrad Symphony.” At some point this was changed, although not all ticket holders were even informed. When asked this week about the change, the orchestra’s press office first cited “artistic decisions.” A day later, it was attributed to “scheduling conflicts.” A look at Sokhiev’s upcoming concert schedule reveals, in fact, that he is scheduled to be leading the Munich Philharmonic on those dates. But clearly more than a scheduling conflict is involved.

While NATO is preparing the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the decisive offensive on the Donbass front, the Wagner PMC is grinding reserves of the Ukrainian army in Bakhmut, allowing the units of the Russian Defense Ministry to gain time and prepare for the upcoming escalation.

Wagner fighters have already secured their positions near the railway station and took control of the high-rise apartment buildings along Pushkin Street, as well as of the jail building. They continue their assault on the territorial military unit in the western part of the city.

The Truth Behind Claimed Russian Strikes on Civilians

The Russian military continues massive strikes on strategic military facilities on the territory of Ukraine.

Recently, Russian strikes have mainly targeted the Kiev-controlled eastern and southern regions but, on April 28, Russian missiles and drones appeared in the sky over central Ukraine.

Before the massive night attack, Ukrainian media reported that five Russian Tu-95MS strategic missile carriers armed with X-101 or X-555 cruise missiles took to the air. Kiev could get this information only from the United States or NATO intelligence.

By morning, the Ukrainian military reported that their air defenses had allegedly shot down 21 Russian missiles, without specifying how many of them had reached their targets.

Despite the fact that Kiev has banned Ukrainians from filming and posting the consequences of Russian strikes on social networks, videos showcasing the defeat of targets continue to be published online, confirming the damage that Kiev is hiding.

Explosions thundered in the cities of Kiev, Kremenchuk, Dnepropetrovsk, as well as in the Kiev, Mykolaiv, Poltava and Cherkasy regions. Strikes targeted military infrastructure facilities: locations of Ukrainian forces, ammunition depots and accumulation points for military equipment and weapons.

According to Ukrainian reports, seven Russian missiles were shot down over the city of Dnepropetrovsk. However, two oil depots filled with fuel for Western military equipment were destroyed in the city. Local authorities reported that two people were killed and three were injured

The Ukrainian military once again demonstrated their incompetence and the inability of Ukrainian air defenses to protect their own people. Local officials confirmed that Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed a multi-storey residential building in the city of Ukrainka in the Kiev region.

In addition, Ukrainian air defenses destroyed a residential building in the city of Uman in the Cherkasy region. According to Zelensky, as a result of a missile strike, ten buildings were damaged and seven people were killed. He did not clarify that civilians were killed after Ukrainian forces attempted to intercept Russian missiles over the apartment buildings, killing their own civilians. Footage from the spot confirms that the reason is the work of the Ukrainian air defense system, and not a direct hit from a Russian missile.

Most likely, the target of the strike was a military airfield located in the region. However, the Ukrainian forces prefer to shoot down missiles over houses, killing civilians, rather than risk the lives of their military.

On April 27, the Russian Defense Ministry also reported on a successful massive strike with precision weapons on Ukraine’s reserves.

Later it was revealed that the Russian missiles destroyed about 20 senior Ukrainian and foreign officers who were holding a meeting in the admiralty building in Nikolaev. A Ukrainian air defense missile trying to intercept the target reportedly hit another apartment building located nearby. However, Kiev traditionally blamed Russians for targeting civilians.
