A court ordered a man who slapped French President Emmanuel Macron across the face this week to serve four months in jail, BFM TV reported.

Damien Tarel, 28, an unemployed fan of medieval swordsmanship who said he is a right-wing sympathiser, attacked Macron when the French president was shaking hands with members of the public during a walkabout on Tuesday.

The court gave Tarel a sentence of 18 months in jail, but 14 of those months were suspended, the broadcaster reported.

Earlier, Tarel told the court in Valence in southern France, that he acted because the president stood for all that was rotten with France, the news channel said.

Tarel said that several days ahead of Macron's visit to the Drome region of southern France, he had thought about throwing an egg or a cream tart at the president, but added the slap was not premeditated.

"I think that Macron represents very neatly the decay of our country," he told the court, according to BFM TV. "If I had challenged Macron to a duel at sunrise, I doubt he would have responded."

Macron has described the attack as an isolated incident and said violence and hate were a threat to democracy. His office did not respond to a request for comment on Tarel's courtroom remarks.

Tarel faced a charge of assault against a public official, an offence which carries a maximum sentence of three years in jail and a 45,000 euro fine.

"PATRIOT"

Tarel struck Macron after the president came over to greet a small crowd of onlookers after visiting a vocational college during a trip to take the pulse of the country as it emerges from the pandemic and ahead of presidential elections in 2022.

Macron reached out to Tarel who was standing behind a security barrier, Tarel then shouted "Down with Macronia" ("A Bas La Macronie") and slapped Macron on the left side of his face. read more

He could also be heard shouting "Montjoie Saint Denis", the army's battle cry when France was still a monarchy.

"It's a patriot's slogan," he was quoted as telling the court.

Sausage Wars: Johnson Reportedly Infuriated After Macron Suggests Northern Ireland is Not Part of UK

The two officials held negotiations in England, which is hosting the G7 summit. Although the meeting was primarily focused on the coronavirus pandemic, economic recovery, and climate change, the leaders also discussed the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol, a provision of the Brexit deal.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was allegedly infuriated after French President Macron suggested that Northern Ireland is not part of the United Kingdom, the UK media has reported. During a conversation on the so-called "sausage row" Johnson ostensibly said the following:

"How would you like it if the French courts stopped you moving Toulouse sausages to Paris?"

The French president purportedly replied that this was not a good comparison, noting that Paris and Toulouse are both parts of the same country. According to The Times, citing people familiar with the matter, the remark made Johnson furious and the PM replied: "Northern Ireland and Britain are part of the same country as well".

A UK government source told the The Times, that Macron's statement was "highly revealing of the EU's position".

Speaking to reporters after negotiations with his French counterpart, a visibly irritated Johnson said Brussels should "get it into their heads" that Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. Britain "will do whatever it takes" to protect its territorial integrity the prime minister said, noting that he hopes that London and Brussels will find "pragmatic solutions" to the ongoing row.

Brexit and The Troubles

In 2016, Britain voted to leave the European Union. Withdrawing from the bloc meant that the UK will no longer be part of its single market and customs union, which guarantee the free movement of goods, services, and labour between its member states. Thus, Brussels will treat Britain like its other non-EU trading partners, conducting checks on everything that crosses its borders.

This presented a huge problem for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland or rather for the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. Between late 1960s and 1998, Northern Ireland was the scene of a violent sectarian conflict dubbed "The Troubles" that left more than 3,600 dead and 30,000 injured. One of the sides (Republicans) opposed Northern Ireland's alliance with the United Kingdom and wanted it to join the Republic of Ireland.

The other side (Unionists) wanted Northern Ireland to remain part of UK. The conflict ended with the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, a peace treaty, which among other things, stipulated that the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland should be almost non-existent – no border posts, no cameras.

The Northern Ireland Protocol and Sausage Row

To avoid the hard border between Belfast and Dublin, the United Kingdom and the European Union agreed that Northern Ireland should remain in the EU single market and that the bloc would conduct checks on goods on the border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK (England, Scotland, and Wales). Thus, everything that goes from Britain to the European Union and vice versa is being checked at this border. The agreement was dubbed the Northern Ireland Protocol (NIP).

justices union...

Investigators in France have raided the country’s Ministry of Justice as part of an inquiry into Eric Dupond-Moretti, the man appointed by President Emmanuel Macron to shake up the legal system, his lawyer has said.

Dupond-Moretti, who was made justice minister in July 2020, is being investigated after conflict-of-interest complaints were filed against him by France’s largest magistrates’ unions.

They argue that some of his work as a high-profile lawyer prior to his government role makes him biased against certain judges.

The minister has claimed the unions are seeking to stop his intended changes to the justice system, including televising court events and updating judges’ training handbooks.

His legal representative, Christophe Ingrain, said on Thursday that his client was “calm” after the search, which he said had involved 20 armed gendarmes in what was a “totally disproportionate” use of force.

Speaking to reporters outside the Ministry of Justice, Ingrain accused investigators of a “violation” of Dupond-Moretti’s privacy.

Ingrain said he did not know what material investigators were seeking, but told the media on Thursday evening that the raid was ongoing.

He said the search efforts had been complicated by the discovery of safes without keys which dated back to the 1960s and had to be broken into by a locksmith.

In the old days, say the 1960s, before General de Gaulle retirement, the French spy network of Section 7 would have used their "plombiers" (professional safe crackers) to open the impossible safes in two minutes, at nighttime and in secret without any trace of effraction... But RAIDING THE MINISTER FOR JUSTICE?  This takes the camembert!

The new store includes a brand new building which at the time of the photo above (by Gus Leonisky) was a big hole in the ground...

Members of the alter-globalization organization Attac wanted to denounce the profits made by billionaire Bernard Arnault, owner of the La Samaritaine brand, inaugurated at the end of June in Paris in the presence of President Emmanuel Macron. Activists from the anti-globalization organization Attac tagged the facade of the La Samaritaine brand in Paris on the morning of July 3, to denounce the profits of the owner of the brand, Bernard Arnault.

La Samaritaine, a Parisian department store closed for 16 years, was renovated by the LVMH group, which inaugurated its reopening on June 23 in the presence of the French Head of State Emmanuel Macron, who on this occasion praised the symbol of "a French art of living ”.

The LFI deputy of the Somme François Ruffin, who devoted part of his film at the closing of the Samaritaine by collecting the testimonies of former employees of the establishment, had commented on this presidential visit in a scathing manner: “Bernard Arnault fired all the employees, transformed a general public grocery store into a luxury thing, and Macron is doing the publicity." Ultimately, the site is supposed to employ around 3,000 people, including very few of the 700 or so employees of the historic Samaritaine, AFP said.

settling old scores...

France’s justice minister has been formally placed under investigation following claims he abused his position in the government to settle scores with magistrates with whom he had trouble when he was a practicing lawyer.

On Friday, lawyers for Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti told reporters that their client is the subject of a formal investigation. Olivier Cousi, one of his legal team, told BFM TV that Dupond-Moretti saw no reason to resign from his ministerial position despite the official inquiry.

Dupond-Moretti was present in court and was reportedly questioned for hours by the Cour de Justice de La République – a special court that deals with complaints against serving ministers – on Friday. It is the first time that a so-called ‘Garde des Sceaux’ (Keeper of the Seals) has been questioned by the special court, according to French media
