Germany should stop paying social benefits to Ukrainian refugees residing in the country and redirect the money to authorities in Kiev instead, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has argued. The diplomat claimed that generous handouts serve as a disincentive for Ukrainian men to return to their homeland and join the military.

According to Eurostat, more than four million Ukrainians are currently living under temporary protection in the EU, with Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic hosting the highest numbers.

As of June, Germany was home to almost 1.2 million Ukrainian refugees, Statista estimated, while in Poland that number currently stands at over 981,000, according to UN data.

In the weeks before Election Day, a loose-knit group of women are organizing online to blanket their communities with pro-Kamala Harris messages — not on yard signs or fliers, but on sticky notes. 

The idea is simple: Take a pad of sticky notes, write messages and post them wherever women may see them — bathroom stalls, the backs of tampon boxes, bathroom mirrors, the gym. 

The messages vary slightly, but a typical one reads something like: "Woman to woman: No one sees your vote at the polls. Vote Harris/Walz."

President Joe Biden has formally apologised for the US's role in running abusive Native American boarding schools for more than 150 years and was heckled at the event by a Gaza war protester. 

"This to me is one of the most consequential things I've ever had an opportunity to do in my whole career," Mr Biden said in his apology in Arizona.

"It's a sin on our soul. … I formally apologise."

Hundreds of people attended the event and many of them were wearing traditional tribal clothing.

The crowd cheered as the US president apologised to the Native American community for the generational trauma caused by the boarding schools.

Writer and activist Arundhati Roy has been awarded the PEN Pinter Prize 2024. This is an annual award set up by English PEN in the memory of playwright Harold Pinter. Shortly after having been named for the prize, Roy announced that her share of the prize money will be donated to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund. She named Alaa Abd el-Fattah, British-Egyptian writer and activist, a ‘Writer of Courage’ who she would share her award with. The following is her acceptance speech for the prize, delivered on the evening of October 10, 2024, at the British Library.

Reaching out to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples can be daunting for non-indigenous people, until respect is safely established, and an equal listening approach. In my own journey of learning how to form connections over more than three decades, the first few awkward approaches were quickly followed by wide smiles and regular ‘taking the mickey,’ a sign of trust and friendship.

The European Union needs to stop “lecturing” other parts of the world and be more respectful towards its partners if it aims to combat the growing influence of Russia and China, European Council President Charles Michel has said.

In an interview with the Financial Times published on Friday, Michel admitted that the bloc has become “convinced that we know what is right and what is wrong” and often fails to make an effort to understand why other countries may think otherwise.

He noted that in the EU there is a “reflex which is close to a form of lecture” when communicating with developing countries with which the bloc has signed agreements on strategic, trade or political cooperation.

Let's imagine you are running a small business — a fast food franchise, for the sake of topicality — and recruiting a new manager. What would be the red flags in considering applicants for the job?

Maybe the fact the candidate is a convicted felon, with three outstanding criminal cases still awaiting judgement, would be cause for concern. Perhaps a long history of racism would be a deal-breaker — including a recent false claim that members of a local immigrant community were eating cats and dogs.

“Their long-term goals are to turn the EU into a federal state like the USA,” Valtersson tells Sputnik, referring to the EU institutions. “There are both federalist and antifederalist forces fighting about the future of the EU within the organization. Those that want a more federal EU use every pretext they can find to strengthen and create new federal institutions.”
