Police have forced back hundreds of protesters who tried to break through a perimeter fence at the UN climate summit venue in Copenhagen.

The Bella Centre, where the conference is taking place, has now been shut off, with no-one allowed to enter or leave.

Activists have been angered by lack of progress on a new climate deal and also by restrictions on access to the talks.

Meanwhile, African countries have softened their demands for climate finance from rich nations.

While we are being made aware that the "Mad Monk" and his "red neck" financial shadow minister are busy underming any attempt by the elected government of Ausralia to deal with climate change - what are they doing underground?

Using their numbers in the House of REVIEW - commonly called the Senate - they have bastardised the Australian democracy. 

The House of Review is individually elected by their respective States, to represent their States, not to use their party numbers to alter the actions of the elected House of Representatives but to vote in the interests of the State who elected them.  The result of this method has provided opposition parties in every Labor State to have the say for them.  No democracy or constitution there.

The methods used in the election of the Senate is surely based on financial and media selection when you consider that nondescripts like Joyce and Fielding can decide the national and international interests of the entire nation!  How stupid is that?

As an example, Barnaby Joyce claimed to represent the people of Queensland in their desire to stop the sale of Telstra - he reniged.  He talks now about the "working families" but he voted for WorkChoices.  He voted against the Parliament being held accountable for their actions.  Just what does he represent?

And now the Liberal rabble goes underground to foster the money needed for a person who, by his own admission, is an accidental leader - to become Prime Minister of Australia.

Since his scare campaign is now disowned by the rest of the world in that cost (call it what you will) will be necessary for any fair dinkum attack on greenhouse gases, no matter from where they come - what will he do now?

As I said before the 2007 federal election - watch the Murdoch press throughout Australia to judge who this media mogul and his cronies, have decided will control our future.

He was asked by Kevin Rudd for a fair go but, now that Labor has received it, what will the baron decide?

UN climate talks in Copenhagen have avoided a total collapse by skirting bitter opposition from several nations to acknowledge a deal championed by US President Barack Obama and five emerging economies, including China.

"Finally we sealed a deal," UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said. "The Copenhagen Accord may not be everything everyone had hoped for, but this decision... is an important beginning."

But a decision at the marathon 193-nation talks merely took note of the new accord, a non-binding deal for combating global warming led by the United States, China, India, Brazil and South Africa.

The delegates stopped far from a full endorsement of the plan, which sets a target of limiting global warming to a maximum 2 degree Celsius rise over pre-industrial times and holds out the prospect of $US100 billion in annual aid from 2020 for developing nations.

Oh Dear... As if planet Earth worked like a clock that could be winded up or down according to our will...

I believe there are scientists who are now tearing their hair. The next step for the serious thinker after the Copenhagen "deal" is to plan for serious survival with a rise of between 6 and 8 degrees C by 2100. And moneys won't do much, except defer the guilt of it all... Meanwhile the deniers will be convinced of their stand as they count the cash saved while claiming "see it's cold in Europe and the USA with all this snow and all that..." In fact, such snow can be an indication of change.

And we don't have the cash... That's why we buy things on credit... Buy now, pay later... and pay we will, with far more than interest... We're playing poker with the entire biosphere of the planet for a few beans, because we're greedy bean counters... We're not experts in flux sciences, nor are we expert in common sense. We have not understood where we live. We are idiots...

The most progressive US president in a generation comes to the most important international meeting since the Second World War and delivers a speech so devoid of substance that he might as well have made it on speaker-phone from a beach in Hawaii. His aides argue in private that he had no choice, such is the opposition on Capitol Hill to any action that could challenge the dominance of fossil fuels in American life. And so the nation that put a man on the Moon can't summon the collective will to protect men and women back here on Earth from the consequences of an economic model and lifestyle choice that has taken on the mantle of a religion.

Then a Chinese premier who is in the process of converting his Communist nation to that new faith (high-carbon consumer capitalism) takes such umbrage at Barack Obama's speech that he refuses to meet – sulking in his hotel room, as if this were a teenager's house party instead of a final effort to stave off the breakdown of our biosphere.

As I have mentioned on this site before, climate change is not "the end of the world", but a change of dynamics that will make some people suffer while others may not. It will mostly change nature beyond specific points, especially since we have already stressed many species by destroying habitats and adding poisons into their environment — and ours too. Within 5 years, we will enter a weird uncharted territory as inevitably, temperature will rise faster and faster than we can comprehend... We will be able to see first hand the result of our carelessness and stupidity. The Tony Abbotts of this world can presently feel smug, content and cocky that the Copenhagen deal was a failure of sorts "as they hoped" since they don't believe in global warming... But the Earth won't have to forgive nor forget the failure or success. The biosphere in which we live is a thin layer of life on the surface of a small planet, and it reacts to the ingredients that appear in it — whether we put them there or not. Humans have added CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the "atmosphere equation" though and from then on it's open slather to the effect of it since "we" — more or less — decided not to do anything significant about it.

When the feds sought to list the polar bear as an endangered species, Gov. Sarah Palin protested this “politicized science” and sued, claiming the polar bear was a healthy species whose numbers had doubled in recent years.

WHO KNOWS... THE RECORD IS INCOMPLETE AND STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT THERE IS A CERTAIN DANGER TO THE SURVIVAL OF POLAR BEARS...

Is the Arctic ice cap melting? So we are told. But what harm has befallen mankind other than to have a Northwest Passage opened up to maritime traffic in the summer?

THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE DURING SUMMER SHOWS THERE IS A WARMING OF THE ARCTIC. THAT WE CAN OR CANNOT NAVIGATE THE PLACE IS IRRELEVANT TO THE SCIENCE.

The Antarctic ice sheet is nine times as large as the Arctic, and here is what the British Antarctic Survey wrote last April:

“(D)uring the winter freeze in Antarctica this ice cover expands to an area roughly twice the size of Europe. Ranging in thickness from less than a metre to several metres, the ice insulates the warm ocean from the frigid atmosphere above. Satellite images show that since the 1970s the extent of Antarctic sea ice has increased at a rate of 100,000 square kilometres a decade.”

THAT IS ON ONE SIDE OF THE CONTINENT CONSISTENT WITH A SLIGHT WARMING. ON THE OTHER SIDE SOME OF THE LOSSES OF ICE HAVE BEEN CALCULATED AT AROUND 90 MILLION TONNES PER YEAR. THE ANTARCTIC IS LIKE AN OLD FASHIONED NON-SELF-DEFROSTING FRIDGE: AS IT WARMS UP IT CAN ICE UP AND USUALLY BECOMES LESS AND LESS EFFICIENT. THE ARCTIC IS DIFFERENT IN THE SENSE THAT THE POSITION OF CONTINENTS INTERFERE WITH THE CAKING UP WHILE "LOSING COLD".

Since then, 4,000 scientists and 72 Nobel Prize winners have signed on. Again, it needs be said: Global warming is cyclical, and has been stagnant for a decade. There is no conclusive proof it is manmade, no conclusive proof it is harmful to the planet.

THE CYCLE WE'VE ENTERED IS PROBABLY THE 120 MILLION YEAR CYCLE... THEN THERE WAS MORE CO2 IN THE ATMOSPHERE. THE SEA LEVEL WAS AT LEAST 200 METRES ABOVE PRESENT SEA LEVEL.

HUMANS HAVE OPENED THE (PANDORA) CARBON BOX, CARBON THAT HAD BEEN MORE OR LESS SEQUESTERED UNDERGROUND SINCE THAT TIME PLUS THE  CARBON SEQUESTERED BEFORE THAT. THE QUESTION IS HOW MUCH CAN WE BURN BEFORE WE START DESTROYING SOME OF THE PLACE. NOTE: GLOBAL WARMING IS NOT "THE END OF THE WORLD". BUT A CHANGE OF DYNAMICS OF THE ATMOSPHERE WITH CONSEQUENCES...

ONE NEEDS TO ALSO NOTE THAT CYCLES ARE NOT EASY SOFT PROGRESSIVE UP AND DOWN CURVES, BUT CHANGES SUCH AS CLIMATE CHANGE CAN (AND HAS) HAPPEN "IN A JIFFY". THEN IT CAN "STABILISE" OR CHANGE SLOWLY ONLY WITH FLUCTUATIONS. THE COMPLEXITIES OF OBSERVATION ARE MULTIPLE. THE RESULTS ARE COMPLEX. THE SIMPLE FACT IS THAT CO2 IS A GREENHOUSE GAS. ADDING GREENHOUSE GASES TO THE GREENHOUSE IS LIKELY TO WARM THE PLACE UP.

French filmmaker Philippe Diaz, in an illuminating documentary opening in New York Friday, traces globalisation back 500 years to the Spanish and Portuguese conquests of the Americas. Diaz shows how the colonial North used the South’s resources to build its industrial base and how its continued control over resources, global trade and debt rules prevents developing countries from ending poverty.

Diaz had produced French feature films such as “Bad Blood” and “The Man Inside” before turning to documentaries. He made “The Empire in Africa” about Sierra Leone. The drama of the new film, “The End of Poverty?”, is as startling as anything he could invent.
