The criminal actions of the Zionist colonial army against the Palestinian people, particularly against the coastal enclave of Gaza, have led to the emergence of the term “gassification” to describe this type of modern siege operation, which combines conventional siege tactics with genocidal practices and total control over the lives of a specific population. The catastrophic human consequences of these actions are irrelevant as long as the ultimate goal is achieved. In the case of “Israel,” this goal is the colonization of the territory and the expulsion of its native inhabitants.

Gassification as a technology of imperial power

The lessons of the macabre Israeli siege system have been incorporated as technologies of political control and regime change by the North American imperial apparatus. And right now, they are being replicated, before the eyes of the entire international community, against Cuba. The gassification of Cuba serves several objectives for American policy: to change a government that has historically not aligned itself with the North American imperial agenda in Latin America; to return political control of the island to capital based in South Florida, which finances the powerful anti-Cuban lobby in the country's politics; and to satisfy the political interests of the current Secretary of State with an eye toward 2028, while simultaneously fueling the vengeful ambitions of the heirs of the class defeated in Cuba in 1959.

It might seem exaggerated to claim that the United States is gassing Cuba, but a closer look reveals the macabre parallels.

Under the Executive Orders of January 29 and May 1, 2026, the President of the United States granted the Secretary of State the discretionary power to impose any sanctions he deems appropriate against Cuban or third-country companies that have or conduct any type of business in Cuba. All fuel suppliers are being prosecuted, and within a six-month period, more than 40 entities were sanctioned in key sectors of the Cuban economy. The main targets of this attack have been the energy sector, finance, medical cooperation, and transportation. The sanctions include both individual companies and ports, such as Mariel. Their immediate result is to almost completely disrupt Cuba's trade with the outside world, especially in key sectors and businesses that can paralyze the economy and society.

While closing all possible avenues, including those involving a response based on domestic resources, a few licenses are being granted sparingly to North American companies and the Cuban private sector to acquire small quantities of essential resources for the country. This tactic is fundamental to the gasification strategy. On the one hand, the aim is to create total dependence of the island on the United States. This allows the tap to be opened and closed at will, transforming it into an additional lever of political pressure. This is the same strategy applied by Zionism at the border crossings with Gaza. Only what the aggressor decides to allow enters.

The other aspect of this strategy is scarcity. Insufficient quantities are allowed in, guaranteeing a bare minimum for survival, but failing to address the fundamental shortage affecting the entire population. In Gaza, it has been reported that the Zionist army's control over central aspects of life in the enclave extends to calculating the total number of calories per person allowed to pass through daily, naturally in quantities far below the recommended intake. In this way, they ensure the continuation of malnutrition, food-related anxiety, and prevent Palestinian residents from building up even a minimal food reserve.

This deliberate scarcity causes social tension within besieged societies to rise exponentially. The small amount that enters is insufficient for everyone, making corruption—inevitable in any society and exacerbated in conditions of chronic scarcity—an even more painful practice. Even the bare minimum becomes a privilege. The shortcomings of the public administration, operating under extraordinary strain and with a chronic lack of human and material resources, are becoming increasingly apparent, as the state disappears from important aspects of people's lives, simply due to its inability to respond to the endless crisis scenarios exacerbated by the siege.

Added to this is an aggressive communication campaign that seeks to deny the siege and portray the victim as the aggressor. This campaign complacently orchestrates the powerful media apparatus of capital and the entire network of influencers they have cultivated as sounding boards for their symbolic agendas. This campaign is the essential complement. It serves to whitewash genocidal practices and, at the same time, as an effective tool of psychological warfare against besieged societies. All the time, plans of aggression, war preparations, and secret ultimatums are being "filtered," designed to bring the besieged society to the point of psychological breaking through the horrific combination of the deterioration of all essential indicators of quality of life and the fear of devastation exacerbated by war.

An interesting aspect of media coverage of the realities of people under siege is the romanticization of resilience. Both corporate media and many alternative media outlets approach these societies to show how, despite everything, they find ways to cope or maintain their zest for life. And this, which is not entirely untrue, serves as a form of consolation and ultimately acts as a demobilizing factor against denunciation and international aid. The resistance of people under siege must be shown without concealing the terrible reality of its impact on their lives. The devastation caused by bombs in Gaza and sanctions in Cuba.

In the case of Cuba, the technology of death has escalated. Now, the siege is against an entire country. The Greater Antilles are larger than many European and Central American countries. Unlike Gaza, they have greater reserves of population, drinking water, fertile land, and several key resources, including oil and mineral production. However, the suffering caused by the siege remains significant. With an aging and predominantly urban population, the current sanctions compound the damage that decades of blockade have inflicted on the country's economic activity. Although Cuba has greater room for maneuver than a coastal enclave, the price of this resistance is very high and will only increase as the siege continues and deepens.

No poor country can, on its own, overcome the economic impact of sanctions like those currently imposed on Cuba. Rubio's objective is to provoke a social explosion that will pave the way for regime change. The dangers of this agenda are obvious for the country and range from civil war to an uncontrolled increase in drug trafficking and drug-related violence. Not to mention the clear implications for the loss of sovereignty that Rubio's agenda entails. The interests he represents are, essentially, those of a group of North American citizens, born to Cuban parents who once owned Cuba, and who aspire to reclaim this lost property to administer it for the benefit of their personal fortunes and the interests of their homeland.

The lukewarm response of the "international community" only sets a precedent of impunity that will allow this strategy to be replicated against any country in the future. Emerging blocs, like the BRICS, and rising individual powers should pay attention to the political and moral implications of what they have done in Gaza and what they are doing in Cuba. In the not-so-distant past, international betrayal of the Spanish Republic—with a few honorable exceptions—facilitated the advance and strengthening of fascism on the European continent. Today, without a doubt, betraying Cuba will open the door to neo-fascism and supremacism in Our America.
