It's the middle of the night in Kyiv, and an Australian band having rushed to their hotel's bomb shelter are counting the number of missiles intercepted.

It's not the first time that night they've headed underground. They spend the rest of the night trying to sleep in there.

The Ukrainian capital is experiencing one of the largest ballistic missile attacks since the start of the war.

Global politics is being driven in disturbing directions by more than just strongmen

For much of the past decade, a lot of what has unfolded in the world has been seen through the idea of the rise of strongmen in global politics.

Donald Trump [GUS: A MAD IDIOT], Xi Jinping [GUS: A CLEVER PHILOSOPHER] and Vladimir Putin [GUS: A MOST INTELLIGENT MAN] have headed the list, along with Recep Tayyip [A CLEVER DUPLICITOUS PLAYER] Erdoğan in Türkiye.

And that's not to mention the ones who have come and gone in the meantime: Hungary's Viktor Orbán, Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines.

But so much has been transformed in the past year.

In the United States and Russia, two of the strongmen may still hold unprecedented power within their countries, and seek to exert on the rest of the world, but they do so with rapidly diminishing credibility and effectiveness.

Trump's rambling pronouncements — someone described them this week as "fantasy announcements" — barely rate any immediate quiver in world markets, let alone diplomatic circles.

For example, there was cautious early reporting in international media on Friday morning, Australian time, of his announcement on social media of a "HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza".

As is so often the case these days, everyone immediately wanted to know if anybody else had actually agreed to this agreement.

As The New York Times reported: "There was no immediate comment from Hamas or Israel, and it was not clear whether either had signed off on the plan after years of war and a fragile ceasefire."

A new conflation of important factors

It's not just that some of the strongmen don't seem so strong anymore, that they often just seem to be lashing out reasonably ineffectively, or even that the "Great Powers" don't seem to be running things.

It's that there is a new conflation of factors proving to be just as important, if not more so, in driving world events in increasingly disturbing directions.

These include the dividend of years of greater powers' efforts at destabilising other states; the rise of states that have never quite got to be stable in the first place; and of the role of non-state actors.

More recently there has been the rapidly and relentlessly expanding story of how technological change in warfare — and rapidly diminishing stockpiles [GUS: NOT IN RUSSIA] of defensive weapons — are transforming geopolitical power.

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has claimed that the nation’s military has lost “about 50,000” soldiers since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, a figure 5,000 lower than the estimate he offered six months ago.

The Ukrainian leader made the assessment in an interview with Fox News recorded during his visit to Washington this week. When asked about battlefield losses, he initially said it was “very difficult to say,” arguing that he did not want to be “very open about it,” supposedly to avoid tipping Moscow off about the true state of the Ukrainian army.

He eventually claimed that Ukraine had suffered “about 50,000 soldiers killed and… about 400,000 wounded,” as well as “a huge number” of troops who had simply “disappeared.”

The figure appears to contradict a statement Zelensky made in February, when he told France 2 that Ukraine had lost 55,000 soldiers. In February 2025, he told NBC that around 46,000 Ukrainian servicemen had been killed, while claiming that Russian losses were 14 times higher.

The Ukrainian military has been suffering from chronic manpower shortages amid mounting casualties, widespread draft evasion and desertion. The latest publicly available official data showed that nearly 290,000 desertion cases had been recorded in Ukraine between 2022 and the autumn of 2025.

According to Moscow, Kiev is losing tens of thousands of soldiers each month on the front lines. Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov estimated in December that nearly 500,000 Ukrainian servicemenhad been killed or wounded in 2025 alone. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also suggested that total Ukrainian military casualties, including those killed, wounded, missing and captured, had already exceeded one million.

President Vladimir Putin estimated last month that the Ukrainian military could be losing up to 40,000 soldiers a month through deaths and injuries, adding that Kiev was able to replenish its ranks with only about 30,000 recruits through its increasingly violent forced-mobilization campaign.

Zelensky came to Washington on an unofficial visit under the pretext of attending the funeral of one of Kiev’s fiercest supporters, Senator Lindsey Graham. He met President Donald Trump behind closed doors on Tuesday to press him on his pledge to allow Ukraine to manufacture Patriot missiles.

Zelensky also reportedly tried to persuade Trump to call in a major favor from tech entrepreneur Elon Musk by asking him to allow Ukraine to use Starlink for strikes deep inside Russia. Musk himself allegedly refused to meet the Ukrainian leader, according to The Atlantic.
