President Donald Trump’s Energy Secretary has downplayed the threat of rising temperatures at a fossil fuel industry-funded event in London, even as millions in the UK, France, Spain, and Italy endure a deadly record-breaking heatwave.
Trump’s Energy Secretary Says ‘Cold Is Larger Killer’ During Record European Heatwave Chris Wright, a former oil and gas executive, urged the UK to embrace fossil fuels at right-wing Alliance for Responsible Citizenship conference in London. By Adam Barnett
Chris Wright, a millionaire former oil and gas executive, appeared by video link at the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) conference, a gathering of transatlantic right-wing activists. As DeSmog revealed last week, ARC is funded by oil and gas investors and donors to President Donald Trump’s Republican Party. In his remarks, Wright lauded energy from fossil fuels as good for the economy and society at large. “Always more people die in the winter than die in summer,” Wright said, “because cold is a vastly larger killer than heat is,” citing the excess deaths across Europe due to high energy prices after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Wright also urged the UK to “change course” and embrace fossil fuels, and called climate change a “slow-moving phenomenon” that would be addressed by technology. Experts have said for years that while technology can play a part in lowering CO2 levels in the atmosphere, it cannot replace ending the use of fossil fuels. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch are also on the speaker schedule for the three-day ARC conference. Both back scrapping the UK’s landmark Climate Change Act, and have called for new North Sea oil extraction. The UK is currently seeing record-breaking temperatures as part of a heatwave across Europe. At least 15 people died last month in the UK in water-related incidents during hot weather, and the Met Office has issued an extreme heat warning for June, when temperatures could reach 39 degrees Celsius (102.2 degrees Fahrenheit). Multiple news outlets are reporting that since Thursday, at least 40 people have drowned in France while seeking escape from the searing temperatures. The New York Times reported Tuesday that highs may reach 40 degrees Celsius this week (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in Paris, and 43 degrees Celsius (around 109 degrees Fahrenheit) in central France. Experts agree that heatwaves are made more likely by the climate crisis. Before joining Trump’s cabinet in 2025, Wright was CEO of fracking services company Liberty Energy. According to its 2024 tax filing, Wright was also a director of the Western Energy Alliance (WEA), a trade group representing more than 300 companies in the oil and gas industry. WEA has historically lobbied against oil and gas industry restrictions. The Trump administration is the most anti-climate and pro-fossil fuel government in recent U.S. history, spreading climate denial, blocking renewable energy, and boosting oil and gas extraction. Oil and gas companies donated $25.8 million to Trump’s 2024 election campaign. Chris Wright at ARCAfter his ARC address, Wright was interviewed by Matt Ridley, a Tory peer and newspaper columnist who is also an advisor to the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF), a UK climate denial think tank. Ridley made reference to the UK heatwave, saying: “It’s hot in London today, Chris. I am speaking to you from a continent where air-conditioning is a sin against Gaia.” He went on to ask Wright about the benefits of fracking in the UK. “Ten years ago, you and I tried to persuade the British government to embrace shale gas”, he said. “If we had succeeded, Britain could have been self-sufficient in gas now, couldn’t it?” Wright replied that a “shale gas revolution” in the UK, where fracking is currently banned, could have led to an “industrial renaissance” that would have cut electricity bills and created jobs for “blue-collar workers”. Ridley also asked whether the “battle for the commons” on climate change had been won in the United States. Wright replied: “ I will say we are winning. We haven’t won fully yet, but we’re winning by leaning in.” He later added: “Understand climate change for what it is: a slow-moving phenomenon that ultimately will be addressed by better technologies.” This reflects Wright’s long-standing views. In a video posted to LinkedIn in January 2023, Wright said, “There is no climate crisis”. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world’s leading climate science body, has said it is “unequivocal” that human influence has caused “unprecedented” global warming, and that this is increasing the threat of floods, drought, and heatwaves. Wright’s comment about hot weather echoed remarks earlier at the ARC event by Bjorn Lomborg, a Danish climate crisis denier. During his slide presentation, Lomborg said that “extreme heat almost everywhere on the planet is the smallest death issue […] remember many more die from extreme cold”. Wright and Lomborg are known to be friends. Wright’s involvement with ARC goes back to its first conference in 2023, when he spoke at the group’s first conference in his capacity as an oil executive. Wright also appeared by video link at ARC’s 2025 conference in London, this time as Trump’s energy chief, vowing to “get out of the way” of coal, oil and gas, and called the UK’s 2050 net zero target “a sinister goal” that would “impoverish” people. ARC CEO Philippa Stroud, a Tory peer, and Wright confirmed this week that they talked on the phone about the ARC conference ahead of his cabinet nomination in 2025.

The WHO said over 1,300 excess deaths have been recorded in Europe since the record-breaking heat wave started around June 21. Germany logged yet another heat record at 41.7 degrees Celsius.
What you need to know
We're pausing our coverage. Below are some of the main developments:
France has reported at least 1,000 more deaths than average during the heat wave
Germany saw yet another day of extreme heat, especially in the east
The 'heat dome' currently over Western Europe is forecast to move to Central Europe and the Balkans
A new rapid study says Europe's record heat wave would have been 'virtually impossible' without man-made climate change

Heatwave shatters records across Europe, disrupts transport and strains hospitals
An intense heatwave that scorched western Europe this week spread into central and eastern parts of the continent on Saturday, bringing record temperatures from Denmark to Switzerland and Germany. The extreme heat disrupted transport, strained hospitals and renewed concerns over the growing impact of climate change on Europe's increasingly frequent summer heatwaves.
Temperatures hit record highs from Switzerland to the Czech Republic, Germany and Denmark on Saturday, as a heat wave that baked western European countries this week moves to central and eastern parts of the continent.
Unusually high temperatures were recorded even in the Nordic countries not known for sweltering summers. The Danish Meteorological Institute reported a new record of 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in Ødum north of Aarhus – the warmest day since records began in 1874.
In Switzerland, a record of 38.8°C (101.8 F) was set in the city of Basel. And Germany marked a new high of 41.5°C (106.7 F), in Möckern-Drewitz in Saxony-Anhalt, according to preliminary data by the German Weather Service. The previous record was set a day earlier.
The country's famous Autobahn was overwhelmed, too, as temperatures were expected to hit 40°C (104 F). In two places outside Berlin, the concrete of the A2 burst due to the high temperatures and the highway had to be closed. Other highway damage was also reported across the country, according to German daily Bild.
Train operator Deutsche Bahn and other rail companies advised against all nonessential travel train travel this weekend.

Temperature records were broken across the continent again on Sunday – including in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic – as the extreme heat continued to move east.
In a post on X, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said more than 1,300 excess deaths had been recorded since 21 June "linked to high temperatures in Europe".
"Heat stress is often called the 'silent killer' - and European homes, workplaces and schools were not built for these temperatures," he said.
On Sunday morning, France's national health ministry said there had been around 1,000 more deaths than expected in the country since Wednesday.
Many of the extra fatalities are among those aged 65 over, the agency said, after logging a 40% rise in the number of people dying at home.
"Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, heating at twice the global average," Tedros warned.
Millions of people across the continent are currently "living under extreme heat, hundreds have died, schools are shut, grids are buckling", he added.

GUSNOTE: WHAT FOLLOWS IS THE "CLIMATE POLICY" OF THE ONE NOTHING PARTY... YOUNG KIDS, YOUNG ADULTS, MILLENNIALS, PRAM PUSHERS, OLD FARMERS AND DEAD FRENCH PEOPLE, THE CHOICE IS YOURS... VOTE FOR THE HELL OF ONE NOTION — OR BE SENSIBLE...
SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THIS SITE WE HAVE EXPLORED THE CAUSE OF GLOBAL WARMING. DESPITE A FEW SCIENTISTS [WHO ARE NOT CLIMATE SCIENTISTS, BUT EXPERTS IN RED-HAIRCUT BY HALF] THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF SERIOUS SCIENTISTS ARE SHITTING IN THEIR PANTS BECAUSE THEY KNOW WHAT'S COMING... GLOBAL WARMING IS A COMPLEX ISSUE THAT A FOOL OR A FOOLISH FISH-N'-CHIPS-MONGER WOULD NOT HAVE A CLUE ABOUT, UNLESS THEY TRUST THE PROPER SCIENCES.
WE PRIDE OURSELVES HERE OF CARRYING ON THE GOOD WORK OF SVANTE ARRHENIUS PUBLISHED IN 1897, BY SIMPLIFYING HIS CARBON EQUATION INTO A SIMPLE SET OF FIGURES:
NATURAL ATMOSPHERIC VARIATIONS:
ICE AGES: 180 ppm CO2
WARM PERIODS: 300 ppm CO2
TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE: BETWEEN 6 AND 10 DEGREES CELSIUS.
FOSSIL FUELS BURNING ADDED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE:
PRESENTLY: 120ppm ADDED TO 300 ppm CO2 = 420 ppm
PROPORTION OF TEMPERATURE ADDED: BETWEEN 4 AND 6 DEGREES CELSIUS
PLEASE NOTE: THE PRESENT INCREASE OF GLOBAL TEMPERATURE IN REGARD TO PRE-INDUSTRIAL TIMES IS UP TO 1.5 DEGREES AND RISING. AS NOTED ON THIS SITE, THERE IS ELASTICITY BETWEEN CAUSE AND EFFECT [WHICH ARE STUDIED WITH CLIMATE MODELLING COMPUTERS].
ADDING MORE CO2 [NOx and methane], AT THE PRESENT RATE, INTO THE ATMOSPHERE WILL INCREASE THE TEMPERATURE BETWEEN 6 AND 9 DEGREES CELSIUS BEYOND 2100. AT THIS LEVEL, EARTH WILL BE LIKE HELL.

One Nation believes Australia should withdraw from the United Nations Paris Agreement signed in 2016.
Australia has committed to the deepest and most savage carbon emission cuts in the world on a per person basis. This commitment is predicted to slow the Australian economy with enormous job losses. In our view, this economic suicide cannot be justified on the evidence put forward by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
We know that the majority of people believe in man-made global warming caused by carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. This belief is reinforced by media coverage of events like forest fires and droughts, but government policy needs to rest on the evidence and there is a growing concern about the evidence on which the claims of man-made global warming rests.
It is just too easy to allow our memories, often unreliable, to accept the often repeated claims that it has never been hotter. Given the economic costs, we believe we need to listen to the evidence.
It is the evidence we should take regard of when making policy. The history of science is that it’s the evidence that counts.
We have confidence in evidence when the experiment can be repeated and the same results are achieved.
We have confidence in science when the evidence is consistent with the theory and that theory predicts events in the future.
Scientists predicted global warming would lead to extremes of weather, which would be more intense and more frequent, but despite media reports extreme weather events were more common prior to 1960 than at any time since.
Climate science suffers from problems not found in other areas. Firstly, there are no accurate records for past temperature and it is difficult to reconstruct those temperatures from proxies. Secondly, it is difficult to arrive at a single temperature for the earth in the past and a single temperature for the earth now, so that the two temperatures can be compared and in that way, we can say there is a pattern of warming not seen before the greenhouse gases increased in the atmosphere.
Central to both these problems is the fact that there is no one place to take the earth’s temperature, but rather an infinite number of places ranging from the equator to the poles. Any attempt to add temperature measurements together creates uncertainty because the average varies depending on how many temperatures are collected in cold places and how many in hot places.
If there is global warming, then we say it should be reflected in a large number of places in different climate zones but in Australia that appears not to be the case.
The longest-running weather collection station in Australia, known as the Nobby’s Weather Station at Newcastle, has shown no pattern of warming since temperature records were collected in 1862. The hottest mean average temperatures at Nobby’s were before 1900 and the highest maximums before 1890.
There are other historical records for temperature kept by telegraph operators on the Overland Telegraph Service from the mid-1800s. They show temperatures were higher and heat waves were longer in duration before 1900.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) was established in 1906 and its records start in 1910, but it does not use earlier temperature records.
The IPCC uses a homogenized data set known as HadCrut4, which is a compiled by the Hadley Centre of the UK Met Office and the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia.
The 2009 Climategate emails from the CRU at the University of East Anglia reveal the problems with the methods used by climate scientists to determine global temperatures. These emails show how difficult it is to recreate past temperatures from tree rings, lake sediment cores, bubbles of air caught in ice cores and other proxies for past temperature.
It is critical these reconstructed past temperatures are right, because any claim of global warming rests on evidence that temperatures were lower in the period before 1850 when industrialisation started to increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Climate scientists acknowledge that the earth’s climate has changed in the past including when large parts of the world were covered in ice. The medieval warm period (950-1200) was following by colder and warmer periods.
It is generally agreed that natural events caused these temperature changes. These natural events include volcanic eruptions, and progressive changes in the earth’s tilt, the earth’s path around the sun and the wobble effect of the earth spinning on its axis.
It was only in 2015 that evidence was found of a connection between the earth’s tilt (that shifts through a 41,000 year cycle between 21.5 degrees and 24.5 degrees) and the movement of the low-pressure band of clouds (that is the earth’s largest source of heat and moisture- the Intertropical Convergence Zone). This research suggests severe droughts and severe flooding can be caused by changes in the earth’s tilt.
It is clear to us that climate research needs to continue, but after thirty years of work by the IPCC there is insufficient evidence of global warming of the kind claimed by the IPCC and there is insufficient evidence of the climate catastrophes predicted.
We are the only political party to question climate science. One Nation Senators have taken every opportunity to use the Senate Estimates cycle, to understand the position of government advisers on climate science like CSIRO.
