when the russians were our "friends"....

DURING WORLD WAR TWO, THE WEST [UK AND EUROPE] WAS DESPERATE... AMERICA WAS NOT READY TO FIGHT IN EUROPE, HAVING TO DEAL WITH THE JAPANESE IN THE PACIFIC... HERE ONE CAN SAY THAT THE ANTI-RUSSIAN SENTIMENT, WHICH HAD FOLLOWED WORLD WAR ONE IN THE WEST, ESPECIALLY AMERICA, WAS HYPOCRITICALLY SET ASIDE.

FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC, THE RUSSIANS WERE OUR FRIENDS... THEY WERE COURAGEOUSLY FIGHTING THE NAZIS ON THE EASTERN FRONT.

FOR THE GEOPOLITICIANS, HITLER HAD BEEN SECRETLY COAXED BY THE WEST TO INVADE RUSSIA FOR TWO REASONS: A) DIVIDE THE MASSIVE GERMAN ARMY INTO TWO FRONTS AND B) BREAK AND DESTROY A "WEAK" RUSSIA BY HAVING TO FIGHT A FAR SUPERIOR GERMAN ARMY... MEANWHILE THE WEST WAS GOING TO "WIN" AGAINST THE GERMANS ON THE WESTERN FRONT, WHICH ALSO INCLUDED AFRICA. MANY SUB-PLOTS OF DECEIT INVOLVING EUROPEAN COUNTRIES, INCLUDING UKRAINE, HAVE BEEN PEPPERED THROUGHOUT THIS SITE.

AT THE TIME, PORTUGAL WAS NEUTRAL AND BECAME THE MEETING PLACE FOR SECRET AGENTS ON BOTH SIDES... IRELAND WAS NEUTRAL THOUGH POSSIBLY SECRETLY SUPPORTING HITLER, WHILE SPAIN WAS NOT INVOLVED IN THE WAR PER SE, BUT SUPPORTING HITLER NONETHELESS AFTER HE HELPED FRANCO'S RISE TO POWER.

On the Town: our guide to Bernstein's 1944 musical that took Broadway by storm

We give you the backstory to Leonard Bernstein's hugely successful musical comedy, On the Town, based on Jerome Robbins's ballet

BY Freya Parr

On the Town is based on the 1944 ballet Fancy Free, which Leonard Bernstein scored to accompany Jerome Robbins’s choreography. It tells the story of three soldiers who are set loose on New York City for their 24-hour leave. We go with them on their adventures with the women they meet along the way.

The history of On the Town: how the musical came to be

Jerome Robbins and Leonard Bernstein went on to collaborate on many other projects, not least West Side Story. It was Robbins that first plucked Bernstein from obscurity though, as when when Robbins first commissioned him to write the score to Fancy Free, Bernstein was a relatively unknown composer.

The show ends with the sailors getting back on the ship, waving goodbye to their female companions, and three new sailors jump off the ship to start their 24-hour adventures in New York City. This musical comedy really is a love letter to New York, the city Bernstein thought of as his home.

On the Town was premiered on Broadway in 1944, with the film rights sold before the show even hit the stage. It was considered very progressive at the time, as it was the first musical that incorporated black and white characters performing alongside one another in equal roles [GUS BOLD], with a complete lack of racial stereotyping. Plus, the show’s first conductor, Everett Lee, was the first black conductor and musical director on Broadway.

HERE GUS LEONISKY SMELLS A RAT.... NOT A BIG ONE THOUGH. WE HAVE TO CONSIDER THAT BLACK PEOPLE HAD BEEN SEGREGATED AND HUMILIATED BY THE AMERICANS, EVEN AFTER THE END OF SLAVERY. BUT AS AMERICA WAS WAGING WARS IN EUROPE AND IN THE PACIFIC, IT NEEDED SOLDIERS... IN MOST SOCIAL STRUCTURES, THE POOR TEND TO BECOME THE FOOT SOLDIERS — THE FRONT LINE FODDER... AT THE TIME BLACKS WOULD HAVE BEEN IDEAL, BUT....

When the U.S. entered World War II, the U.S. Army was racially segregated. Despite the service of African American soldiers in every previous American conflict, exclusion and discrimination from the American War Department made it difficult for black soldiers to serve. In 1939, only 3,640 black soldiers were enlisted under white leadership.[24] Led by Rayford W. Logan, head of the Committee for the Participation of Negroes in National Defense, the push for greater black participation and nondiscrimination in the military was reflected in the Selective Service Act of 1940.[24] Members of the NAACP also met with Roosevelt to outline demands for the betterment of black soldiers' conditions in the military.[24]

Because of this resistance to the Army's treatment of its black soldiers, military leadership began to attempt to address the issue beginning in 1943, but segregation in the armed forces remained official policy until 1948.[25][26] Roosevelt's racial quotas limited the black military population to nine percent—a proportion that the Army never even reached.[24] Furthermore, vast majority of black soldiers were never sent overseas, due to exclusionary requests and discriminatory treatment from foreign governments.[24]

SO BACK TO THE PICTURE [BY GUS LEONISKY] AT TOP: AN ORIGINAL PROGRAM COVER FOR ONE BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF "ON THE TOWN"... FROM GUS'S COLLECTION OF STUFF....

SOON AFTER THIS "PROPAGANDA", EVEN BEFORE THE END OF WORLD WAR TWO, ESPECIALLY AS THE RUSSIANS WERE WINNING ON THE EASTERN FRONT AND WERE MARCHING TOWARDS BERLIN, THE WEST STARTED TO RETURN TO HATING THE RUSSIANS. THIS SENTIMENT, HYPOCRITICALLY SMOOTHED A TAD WHEN GORBACHEV MADE A DEAL WITH REAGAN, RETURNED SWIFTLY AND HAS ONLY GONE CRESCENDO IN THE WEST EVER SINCE... EUROPE RESENT RUSSIA'S EXISTENCE NOT BECAUSE OF UKRAINE, BUT BECAUSE IT WON WORLD WAR TWO.

STILL THERE.... CELEBRATING 100 YEARS

For a century, New York's defining cultural moments have taken place at Russian Tea Room. Ever since members of the Russian Imperial Ballet founded the restaurant in 1926, it has been a second home for boldface names and the intellectual elite — an exclusive enclave where actors, writers, politicians, and businessmen planned their next deals and feted their friends' latest Carnegie Hall performances.
