this would be a time for superman to save the world....

President Donald Trump has threatened Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, with a “bigger price” than the one paid by her recently captured predecessor Nicolas Maduro.

In the early hours of Saturday, American forces swooped over the Venezuelan capital of Caracas and captured Maduro and his wife and took them back to the US, where they will soon face charges of orchestrating a “narco-terrorism conspiracy.”

In Maduro’s absence, Venezuela’s Supreme Court has granted Rodriguez, who served as vice president, presidential powers and ordered her to immediately assume office in an acting capacity.

However, “if she doesn’t do what’s right, she is going to pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro,” Trump told The Atlantic in a phone interview on Sunday.

In the meantime, the US will “run” Venezuela after carrying out a regime-change operation in the oil-rich South American country, Trump said on Saturday.

“We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition,”Trump told the media from his Mar-a-Lago resort. “We’re there now… we’re going to stay until such time as a proper transition can take place.”

We’re going to have our very large US oil companies, the biggest anywhere in the world, go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure, the oil infrastructure, and start making money for the country and we are ready to stage a second and much larger attack if we need to do so. So we were prepared to do a second wave,” Trump added.

Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello Rondon has told the country’s troops to “trust the leadership,” while Foreign Minister Yvan Gil has accused Washington of seeking to gain control of the Latin American nation’s natural resources.

In a statement, Moscow has condemned the US “aggression,” called for “immediate clarification” on Maduro’s whereabouts and lamented that “ideological hostility has triumphed over businesslike pragmatism.”

Forty-eight hours after U.S. forces kidnapped Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro, questions remain as to whether the Venezuelan leader was betrayed by people close to him.

To examine whether Maduro might have been sold out by traitors in his own government, Dimitri Lascaris speaks with José Luis Granados Ceja.

José Luis is a journalist and political analyst based in Mexico City. He's also a co-founder of Soberanía: The Mexican Politics Podcast and a contributor to Drop Site News, covering Latin America.

Dimitri and José Luis also discuss what it will take for the governments of Latin America to defend themselves from future aggressions by the Trump regime.

Quoting Nelson Mandela on His Centenary, Secretary-General Says Overcoming Poverty ‘Is Not an Act of Charity, It Is an Act of Justice’

Following are UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ remarks at an event to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s centenary, in New York today [18 July 2018]:

I am very pleased to be with you to celebrate the life and achievements of one of the greatest leaders of our time.

Nelson Mandela would have been 100 years old today.  I was fortunate to meet him several times, and I will never forget my first meeting in Johannesburg, even before he was elected President.  I was tremendously impressed by his vision, his wisdom, his determination and his compassion.

Very few people in history have captured the imagination of the world as he did.  Even fewer have been able to provide such inspiration.  He stands today as a beacon for universal values — peace, forgiveness, humility, integrity, passion, respect and service.  Madiba showed us that these are not just words or vague ideals, but concrete actions that we can all take.  We can all be humble and respectful, we can all forgive, we can all work to make the world more peaceful.

Each year, on this day, we focus on Madiba’s legacy, especially his call for solidarity and service.  It was this sense of duty to others that made Nelson Mandela willing to risk his life for justice.  He faced his oppressors in court, knowing they had the power of life and death, and he refused to back down.  His commitment to equality saw him jailed.  But, it sustained him in his imprisonment.  And it brought him freedom and made him the legitimate democratically elected President of his country and of his people.  And it enabled him to embody for people across the world the principles and values on which a peaceful world is based.

Today, as on every Mandela Day, we honour Madiba’s memory by calling on people around the world to make a difference, as he did.  He understood that we each have in our hands the ability to create a better world.  A world where people are treated equally and fairly, regardless of race, faith or gender.  Creating that better world is the job — indeed the duty — of our Organization.

The United Nations was founded on a promise to end the scourge of war and build a world based on fundamental human rights, where people can enjoy social progress in larger freedom.  That is why our Organization worked to end apartheid, and why we promote peace, human rights and development for all people everywhere.

We have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go.  Fortunately, we have now a road map — the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  At its heart is a promise to end all forms of poverty and leave no one behind.  To quote Nelson Mandela:  “Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity.  It is an act of justice.  It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.  While poverty persists, there is no true freedom.”

Today, on Nelson Mandela’s centenary, let us act on Madiba’s words.  Let us recall all the promises we have made — in the Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 2030 Agenda — and let us commit to honour our pledges.  Let us work for the better world we know can exist.

How can we know such a thing?  Because Nelson Mandela showed us.  He demonstrated by his life’s work that no obstacle is insurmountable.  What was once thought impossible can indeed be possible if we persevere with commitment and conviction.

So, on this day — on every day — let us be inspired by Nelson Mandela — a true symbol of human greatness.  Thank you.

Hitler's Germany invaded Poland 85 years ago

Ralf Bosen

August 31, 2024

World War II began with Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939. Adolf Hitler used a propaganda lie as a pretext to strike. It was a historic turning point that still has relevance for today.

On the evening of August 31, 1939, members of Nazi Germany's paramilitary organization, the "Schutzstaffel" (SS) occupied a radio station in Gleiwitz, Upper Silesia — then Germany and now Gliwice, Poland. They pretended to be Polish soldiers and broadcast a message in Polish calling for armed struggle against Nazi Germany.

The goal was to give the impression that Polish soldiers had attacked and taken control of the German radio station. As "proof" the men left behind the body of an imprisoned Polish civilian framing him as a perpetrator. They had murdered him for this very purpose. The false flag attack was part of a series of similar provocations staged along the border. Germany's Nazi leader Adolf Hitler wanted a justification for war in order to seize Poland and his plans for expansionism towards the East.

Less than 24 hours later, early on the morning of September 1, the German military, the Wehrmacht invaded Poland — without having declared war.

That same day, Hitler made a statement in front of the lawmakers in the Reichstag in Berlin that was broadcast on the radio into virtually every German home: "This night for the first time Polish regular soldiers fired on our territory. Since 5.45 A.M. we have been returning the fire, and from now on bombs will be met by bombs. Whoever fights with poison gas will be fought with poison gas. Whoever departs from the rules of humane warfare can only expect that we shall do the same. I will continue this struggle, no matter against whom until the safety of the Reich and its rights are secured."

The Ministry of Propaganda then issued guidelines on how the media was to report on the conflict: The word "war" was not to be used in headlines. The message to be conveyed was: we are only striking back — as the Führer had said in his speech. In Germany, the word "Führer," which translates as "leader," is directly associated with Adolf Hitler.

This lie was the pretext for an attack that would start World War II. The supposed victims were in fact the perpetrators.

According to Matthias Oppermann, head of the history department of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, which is affiliated with the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the staged attack on the Gleiwitz radio station was meant to serve three purposes. "First, to convince the German people, who were by no means enthusiastic at the prospect of going to war yet again, that Poland had provoked Germany and retaliation was therefore unavoidable. Second, foreign countries, above all Great Britain and France, also had to be convinced of this narrative."

Poland's allies, France and Great Britain, saw through Hitler's ploy. Two days after the invasion, they declared war on Germany. However military aid for Poland failed to materialize  — due to caution, political hesitation and strategic miscalculation.
