Civilisations rise and fall. Some are vanquished militarily, subjugated, annihilated: Carthago delenda est (Cato, 146 BC). Many indigenous cultures of North and South America succumbed under the onslaught of Europeans conquistadores, who occupied their lands, spoliated their resources, enslaved them, starved them to death. The First Nations of America were victims of genocide, including the Arawaks, Siboneyes und Tainos of Cuba (Bartolomé de las Casas, “The Destruction of the Indies”).

Redescovering the moral compass

This “clash of civilizations” saw the European invaders exterminate millions of natives, as documented in Professor David Stannard’s riveting book “American Holocaust” (Oxford, 1992).
  Some civilisations disappear. leaving traces of architectural and artistic grandeur, but there is no satisfactory explanation of the reasons for their demise, e.g. the Maya, the Rapa Nui. Other civilizations enter a self-destructing spiral. Western civilisation finds itself in this category, justifying our resolution for 2026:
  We must affirm our civilizational heritage, the enduring validity of Western culture, recommit to the peace agenda of the UN-Charter, reject fear-mongering, relearn diplomacy as a preventive strategy, practice intellectual honesty with ourselves and others. Most importantly, we must reject fake news, fake history and pseudo-law disseminated by the media, politicians, sold-out journalists and court historians. Words do stand for specific concepts, values, things. Language must not be used to destroy meaning, hide ulterior purposes. Orwellian newspeak, relentless propaganda, enforced cognitive dissonance may eventually obliterate the legacy of Erasmus, René Descartes, Baruch Spinoza, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire, Immanuel Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Dante, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Alexander Pushkin, Leo Tolstoy, Raffaello, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Mahler, and many more.
  Western civilisation is not inexorably doomed, but our leaders in Washington, London, Paris and Berlin have lost the moral compass and may yet drive us to Apocalypse. Civilisation still means a commitment to logic and rationality, playing by the rules and not cheating. Alas, we have tolerated a culture of cheating for too long which may eventually prove our undoing. The intellectual dishonesty of our leaders entails fraud on humanity, fraud on civilisation. We must push back.
