UN points out major flaw in latest Israeli protest
West Jerusalem’s claim it has quit the UN Human Rights Council is contradictory, as it is not a member of the body, a UNHRC spokesman has clarified

Israel is not currently a member of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), meaning it cannot officially withdraw from a body it is not part of, UNHRC spokesman Pascal Sim has stated.

On Wednesday, a day after US President Donald Trump announced Washington’s withdrawal from the UNHRC, West Jerusalem declared that it was also quitting the council, which is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide.

“Israel has an observer status in the UN Human Rights Council, as does any of the 193 UN member states that are not among the 47 members of the Council. An observer state in the Council cannot withdraw from a body it is not a member of,” Sim told TASS on Thursday.

The spokesman noted that Israel “regularly interacted with UNHRC for many years, participating and addressing several meetings” of the body. He emphasized that the UN Human Rights Council “welcomes and encourages the participation of every UN member state – whether a member of the Council or an observer – in the work of the Council and its mechanisms.”

In his statement on Wednesday, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar criticized the UNHRC, claiming that it “has traditionally protected human rights abusers by allowing them to hide from scrutiny, and instead obsessively demonizes the one democracy in the Middle East – Israel.”

He further accused the body of “propagating antisemitism” and discriminating against Israel. “Israel has been subjected to over 100 condemnatory resolutions, over 20% of all resolutions ever passed in the Council – more than against Iran, Cuba, North Korea, and Venezuela combined,” Saar said.

As a result of this decision, Israel’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Daniel Meron, will no longer attend the council’s sessions.

MEANWHILE:

The weaponising of ‘antisemitism’ is to hide the genocide    By John Menadue

As expressed in the UN General Assembly, the vast majority of the world’s governments and peoples agree that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza and now the West Bank. The main supporters of Israel — the US, Canada, Australia and NZ, the settler colonial states — have all expropriated their indigenous populations and find little disagreement with Israel doing the same.

Only the US veto in the Security Council prevents full disclosure of the barbarity of the IDF, supported by the people of Israel. We have been lied to time and time again that the IDF was only targeting Hamas and not civilians.

Since 2018, Netanyahu has allowed suitcases holding millions in Qatari cash to enter Gaza through its crossings in order to strengthen Hamas against the Palestinian Authority of Mahmoud Abbas. Now we are told by Netanyahu that Hamas is the epitome of terrorist evil and must be destroyed.

Netanyahu has for decades opposed a two-state solution and our timid politicians prattle on about it, but do nothing to seriously advance it. The extremists in the Zionist lobby don’t want a two-state solution either. They want Israeli occupation of all of Palestine.

So much of our media in in thrall of the Zionist lobby and its propaganda. They deliberately manufacture consent for the genocide. Truth is discounted. Ignorance is widespread.

This is especially true of The Australian newspaper which is a part of the least trusted media group in Australia. The Murdoch media is also the most discredited media group in the English-speaking world. It lies to keep sweet with its readers and viewers. It is a rogue organisation.

They can’t get enough of attacks on synagogues, but show no interest in the daily harassment of Muslims. Even throwing eggs in Bondi is seized on by the media and the police as another case of antisemitism.

Islamophobia is a much more serious concern, but Muslims are not as well organised as the Zionist lobby and do not have the ear of politicians and the media. And they don’t have a powerful lobby that can call politicians and journalists to heel as and when necessary. A few years ago, Scott Morrison urged the shadow cabinet to capitalise on the electorate’s growing concerns about “Muslim immigration”, “Muslims in Australia” and the “inability” of Muslim migrants to integrate.

There is a campaign in the Western world by the Zionist lobby to assert that criticism of the Israeli Government’s genocide in Gaza is antisemitic. “Antisemitism” has become a cloak to hide the genocide, mass murder and displacement of Palestinian people.

We are told to heed the hurt feelings of Zionists, some on university campuses, who support genocide or have wilfully chosen to ignore it. What twisted logic this is.

The Palestinian scholar at Macquarie University, Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah, put it eloquently and correctly. She said, “the feelings and fragility of Zionists are used as a rhetorical shield to deflect from engaging with the moral and material reality of genocide”.

She asked: “How can any individual support an apartheid settler colonial state carpet bomb, … starve … a population of over 2 million people, murder over 40,000 people…, and still make it about your sense of safety …?

“Since when do the victims of genocide have the responsibility to defer to, and protect, the feelings of those who enact, support, and enable their genocide?”

The historic victims of the Holocaust are now inflicting another Holocaust on the Palestinian people. This has been ongoing for a century, seizing Palestinian land, killing the people and destroying their communities We are expected to ignore it.

The genocidal intent of Israel is abundantly clear as numerous United Nations resolutions, the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court have made clear. The leader of Israel is an indicted war criminal. In the US, he gets support from a convicted felon when he should be arrested and extradited to The Hague for trial.

But the Zionist lobby is hell-bent on stopping criticism of the behaviour of Israel and its criminal leadership.

Under illegal Israeli occupation, Palestinians have a right to rebel. The Zionist strategy to label people who criticise Israel as antisemitic should be exposed as a cover for Israeli genocide.

The lives of Palestinians killed in the Gaza genocide are as valuable as the lives lost by Jews in the European Holocaust. “Never again” must apply not just to Jews, but to Palestinians and all humanity.

We must not allow the weaponisation of antisemitism to crush legitimate criticism of the ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza and the West Bank.

To criticise the Israel genocide is not antisemitic.

Antisemitism as a morally repugnant excuse for genocide    By Les MacDonald

It is not widely appreciated that the term “antisemitism” is a relatively modern one, originating in 1879 when the German agitator Wilhelm Marr used it to describe the anti-Jewish campaigns underway in central Europe at that time. The term is a misnomer since “Semitic peoples” include members of any group that speaks or historically spoke a Semitic language, including Jews and Arabs. According to Oxford Reference, the term “Semitic” derives from the biblical figure Shem, son of Noah, from whom these groups were traditionally thought to descend. Therefore, antisemitism, in a literal sense, would imply hostility toward both Jews and Arabs. Of course, following the logic of that label, it can equally be said that Zionists are antisemitic as they demonstrate hatred towards and commit criminal acts against the Semitic Arabs of Palestine. However, its common usage today, which has been adopted and promoted for political purposes by the practitioners of the far-right Zionist ideology, refers specifically to prejudice or hostility against Jewish people.

The question of whether Jews and Arabs are genetically distinct is a crucial one. Scientific research, such as a study cited by Ann Gibbons, indicates that some Muslim Arabs in the Middle East are descended from Christians and Jews who lived in the region — known as the southern Levant — thousands of years ago. Geneticist Michael Hammer’s study of 1371 men worldwide found that the Y chromosomes of Middle Eastern Arabs and Jews are nearly indistinguishable. These findings highlight the shared ancestry of Jews and Arabs, who both descend from ancient populations that inhabited the Levant long before the emergence of the religions of Judaism or Islam.

Given this shared ancestry, the current conflict in Palestine cannot be attributed to racial differences. Instead, it is deeply rooted in political and religious ideologies. The belief that Jews are a distinct, “chosen” people arise purely from religious teachings, which have been used historically to justify exclusive claims to land and discriminatory practices. Such beliefs, however, lack any foundation in genetic fact.

Throughout history, genocidal conflicts have often been justified through religious narratives and power struggles. In the context of modern Israel, Zionism has played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s policies and territorial ambitions. Zionism, a political ideology founded by Theodor Herzl in the late 19th century, seeks to establish and maintain a Jewish homeland in the historic region of Palestine. This political ideology has appropriated religion to legitimise territorial theft from indigenous peoples.

One example is the invocation of biblical passages such as Psalm 72:8, which reads: “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.” Zionist leaders, such as David Ben-Gurion, have interpreted such texts as a divine mandate for the establishment of a Jewish state encompassing all the land “from the river to the sea.” While similar territorial claims can also be found in Islamic and Christian traditions, Zionist ideology has appropriated these religious texts to justify their current policies of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

The instrumentalisation of a particular idea of antisemitism as being solely related to hatred of Hebrew speakers by the Zionist Israeli government has been a powerful tool for deflecting criticism of its policies. By framing opposition to its actions as inherently antisemitic, Israel’s leadership has effectively shielded itself from international scrutiny. This strategy has found resonance in the West, where historical guilt over the Holocaust has led to widespread reluctance to criticise Israel.

Western societies, particularly in Europe and the United States, have a long history of persecuting Jewish populations, culminating in the Holocaust. This history has created a climate in which accusations of antisemitism carry significant weight, frequently stifling legitimate critiques of Israeli policies even those made by the UN and the international courts of law. However, this narrative holds less sway in the Global South which represents the vast bulk of humanity, where nations do not share the same historical guilt and are more likely to view Israel’s actions accurately as instruments of Western colonialism and imperialism and violations of international law and human rights.

The global response to Israel’s actions in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon has been increasingly critical. The United Nations General Assembly has repeatedly condemned these actions, and claims have been filed with the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court leading to arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant and judgements that Israel is an apartheid state and plausibly guilty of genocide. These efforts, led largely by countries in the Global South, reflect a growing consensus that the situation in Palestine constitutes a crime against humanity.

Within Israel, there is also growing discontent. Many well-educated, dual-citizen Israelis are emigrating permanently, expressing disillusionment with the policies of the current government. This brain drain, combined with Israel’s increasing international isolation, poses existential challenges to the state’s future. Economically, Israel remains heavily dependent on financial and military aid from Western nations, particularly the United States. However, the US itself faces mounting economic pressures, driven by the costs of supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia and ongoing aid to Israel, as well as the approaching economic crash of the US economy due to its vast and unsustainable levels of debt to the rest of the world.

The use of antisemitism as a justification for Israel’s policies in Palestine is a morally unsustainable strategy. It conflates legitimate criticism of state actions with prejudice against Jewish people, silencing voices that advocate for justice and human rights. The shared ancestry of Jews and Arabs, coupled with the universal principles of human dignity and equality, emphasises the vital need for a resolution based on co-existence and mutual respect rather than extreme far-right ideologies. As the global community continues to comprehensively reject Israel’s actions, the urgency of addressing these issues through diplomacy and international law becomes ever more urgent if the world is to avoid this criminally inspired conflict from resulting in generalised world war.
