At least two people were killed and six injured as Kiev’s forces shelled a civilian site in Lisichansk

Ukrainian forces on Saturday targeted a bakery located in the Russian city of Lisichansk, Lugansk People’s Republic, killing at least two and injuring six more people at the site. The building was heavily damaged in the strike and partially collapsed, footage from the scene shows.

The acting head of the LPR, Leonid Pasechnik, accused the Ukrainian military of deliberately targeting the building during the weekend to maximize potential damage on civilians. 

“Three people were hospitalized. Several dozen more civilians may remain under rubble,” Pasechnik wrote on Telegram without providing an exact figure.

The local military commandant’s office told RIA Novosti the estimated figure of missing persons currently stood at 40. The incident triggered a massive emergency services response, with multiple rescuers and heavy machinery deployed to the scene in order to dig through the rubble.

Iraqi government spokesman Bassem al-Awadi on 3 February denied US claims that Washington notified Baghdad before an overnight bombing campaign that killed at least 16 people and injured 25 more.

“The US side deliberately falsified the facts by announcing prior coordination to commit this aggression, which is a false claim aimed at misleading international public opinion and disavowing legal responsibility for this crime by all international laws,” Awadi told reporters on Saturday, adding that the latest US aggression on Iraqi soil “will put security in Iraq and the region on the brink of the abyss.”

On Friday night, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby claimed the US informed the Iraqi government about the strikes before they were launched. Baghdad says US warplanes hit the positions of Iraqi security forces in Akashat and Al-Qaim, as well as neighboring civilian places.

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs also summoned the US charge d’affaires in Baghdad to deliver a formal protest.

According to the Pentagon, 85 sites in the border regions connecting Iraq and Syria were targeted during the air raids.

Damascus strongly condemned the attack on its territory, revealing that the US warplanes hit eastern regions where the Syrian army has been fighting remnants of ISIS, accusing Washington of “working to revive its activity.”

In a statement, the Syrian foreign ministry “categorically rejected all the pretexts and lies promoted by the US administration to justify this attack,” noting that “the United States proves, once again, that it is the main source of global instability, and that its forces threaten international peace and security.”

Syrian state media reported several casualties after the attacks in the country’s desert region and border areas with Iraq.

According to sources speaking with Al-Mayadeen, most of the sites targeted by US warplanes on Saturday had been completely evacuated before the attacks were launched.

US President Joe on Friday announced retaliatory attacks against “Iran-backed militias” responsible for the deaths of three US service members  “started today and will continue at the times and places that we determine,” while claiming “America does not seek a conflict in the Middle East, or anywhere else in the world.”

Strikes Against Anti-ISIS Militias in Syria and Iraq Prove US War on Terror is a Sham

Dozens of people in Syria and Iraq were killed Saturday morning after the United States fired ‘precision munitions’ into the two countries against 85 targets ranging from command and control and intelligence centers to logistics bases used by anti-ISIS* militias. Sputnik asked a trio of experts about the strikes' implications for the region.
Russia called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Saturday in the wake of what Moscow characterized as a “new blatant act” of US “aggression against sovereign states.”
The strikes, carried out against what the Pentagon characterized as Iranian Revolutionary Guard Quds Force units and “affiliated militia” forces in Syria and Iraq, came after a months-long regional escalation of militia attacks against illegal US bases in Syria and outposts in Iraq, in response to Washington’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza. The Pentagon warned of potential strikes against targets inside Iraq and Syria last week after a militia drone attack against Tower 22, a US military outpost in Jordan just across the border from an illegal US base in southern Syria, which killed three American troops and injured 47 others.
Local media estimated that at least 23 people were killed in Syria and 16 in Iraq in Saturday’s attacks, with Damascus and Baghdad blasting Washington for its flagrant violation of the two countries’ sovereignty. Syria’s Foreign Ministry said it was “not surprised” to see American forces attack targets in the country’s east, “where our forces are fighting against the remnants of the ISIS terrorist organization, while the United States is working to revive ISIS terrorist activity.”
Syria’s Ministry of Culture slammed Washington’s aggression as a blatant violation of the Hague Convention, noting that the US strikes included an attack which hit the Citadel of al-Rahba, a regional ancient architectural marvel whose history goes back to the 9th century AD.
Along with the IRGC, Saturday’s strikes targeted the Popular Mobilization Forces, a militia coalition officially affiliated with the Iraqi government which played a key role in defeating ISIS in fierce battles between 2014 and 2017.

The death toll from a Ukrainian missile strike on the city of Lisichansk in Russia’s Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) has risen to 28, the region’s acting head and the emergencies services have said.

The attack on a bakery occurred during a busy period on Saturday, partially destroying the building. Sources in Russia’s Investigative Committee told the media that the bombardment was likely carried out with the use of a US-made HIMARS multiple rocket launch system, supplied to Kiev by the West.

“As a result of a strike on a bakery by the Ukrainian nationalists, 28 civilians were killed, including one child,” the acting head of the LPR, Leonid Pasechnik, wrote on Telegram on Sunday.

Ten people have been rescued from the rubble, with “medics currently fighting for their lives,” he added.

Sunday has been declared a day of mourning in the LPR for the victims of the “barbaric” Ukrainian strike on Lisichansk, Pasechnik said.
