the most rapid population collapses of a christian community....

John Menadue writes of the ethnic cleansing of Christians from the Holy Land and the shameful silence of Australian Christian leaders.

They are the oldest Christian communities in the world. They have endured Roman persecution, Byzantine decline, the Crusades, Ottoman rule and British colonialism. What they have not survived is the state of Israel.

Shameful silence on the erasure of Christians in the Holy Land

The 1922 British census identified that approximately 11 per cent of the population of what was then known as Mandatory Palestine were Christians. Then followed the Nakba and Palestinian erasure. Today Palestinian Christians across all of historic Palestine – Israel, the West Bank and Gaza – account for approximately 1 per cent of the total Palestinian population.

In Bethlehem, the birthplace of Christianity, and the neighbouring towns of Beit Jala and Beit Sahour, Christians comprised 86 per cent of the population in 1950. They now constitute approximately 10 per cent. This is among the most rapid population collapses of an Indigenous Christian community in modern history.

In his October 2024 letter to Catholics of the Middle East, written on the first anniversary of 7 October, Pope Francis expressed solidarity with Gaza and Middle Eastern Christians. In his Easter message, just before his death, he said: “I think of the people of Gaza and its Christian community where a terrible conflict continues to cause death and destruction and to create a dramatic and deplorable humanitarian situation”. He also declared his “closeness to the sufferings of Christians in Palestine and Israel and all the Israeli people and the Palestinian people”.

Days after his election as Pope, Leo called for an immediate ceasefire and delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Four months later, and marking the International Day of Peace, Pope Leo said “those who really love the people living on the Gaza strip will work to achieve peace in the Holy Land…. Together with you and with the pastors of the churches in the Holy Land I repeat there is no future based on violence forced exile or revenge”.

The Australian Catholic Bishops issued a token statement in May 2024 calling for an end to violence in the Holy Land, but omitted to say anything about the erasure of the Christian community. In May 2025, together with other Catholics – Claire Condon, Chris Sidoti, Marilyn Hatton, Francis Sullivan, Claire Victory, John Warhurst and Patty Faulkner – I sent a letter to Catholic Bishops asking them to speak up for Palestine. There was no response.

Palestinian Christians report that Israel’s control of the West Bank and the current war in Gaza are the primary drivers of the community’s decline, not Muslim neighbours with whom Palestinian Christians have existed for over a millennium. Researchcarried out by Dar al-Kalima University in the occupied West Bank, interviewing more than 1,000 people, concluded that the Israeli occupation of Palestine was the main factor behind the exodus of Palestinian Christians from the region. Only 2 per cent of Christians named religious extremism as a driving factor. The report said the main causes were: “The pressure of Israeli occupation, ongoing constraints, discriminatory policies, arbitrary arrests, confiscation of lands added to the general sense of hopelessness among Palestinian Christians.”

Israel’s nation state law of 2018, which declares Israel the nation state of the Jewish people, specifically downgrades Arabic from an official language and has institutionalised a discriminatory framework that explicitly excludes Christian and Muslim Arab citizens from the founding national character of the state of Israel. It’s called apartheid.

There has also been concern about the violence against Christians in the Holy Land. It has included physical aggression, spitting and stone throwing, and vandalism against churches, cemeteries and Christian property. The heads of all the churches in the Holy Land signed a joint statement in 2023 condemning the attacks and warning of the threat to the Christian presence in the Holy Land. The statement specifically condemned: “This systematic and unprecedented attack against Christians in the Holy Land …”

The small village of Emmaus tells a very big story about erasure. It was a sacred Christian site destroyed by Israel in the 1967 war. For Christians, Emmaus represents the foundational post-resurrection encounter, the moment when the risen Christ was recognised not in the temple or the synagogue but in the sharing of a meal with ordinary people on the road.

The site was venerated by Christian pilgrims from the third century. Throughout the mediaeval period, Eastern Orthodox pilgrims and Catholic missionaries identified Imwas, the Arabic rendering of Emmaus, as the authentic site of the gospel encounter. At the time of the 1967 war there was a mixed community that had lived continuously on the site for centuries. During the 1967 war, the inhabitants of Emmaus were expelled by the IDF. The village was obliterated by the IDF, along with two other Palestinian villages nearby.

On the ruins of Imwas/Emmaus a Canada Park was established, a recreational forest funded by the Jewish National Fund of Canada. Was the park planted over the ruins specifically to make the erasure of the ancient villages permanent and to reframe the landscape as Israeli recreational space rather than Palestinian homeland? Human rights organisations campaigned for the Jewish National Fund to at least acknowledge the history of the land on which the park was built and to include information about the destroyed villages. The JNF declined to do so. Only after litigation did signs go up, which were soon vandalised and/or removed. The park continues to function as Israeli recreational space without any acknowledgment of the villages that it replaced, including Emmaus.

The ethnic cleansing of both Christians and Muslims from Palestine continues. It is not only erasure of a people but of their culture and history.

Australian leaders in church and state are complicit in the ethnic erasure of the Palestinian people, Muslim and Christian alike, from their homeland. They appeal for our help. But they are not being heard. They are being ignored.

The Weapon Between the Pages

Antony Loewenstein responds to a book by leading pro-Israel advocates trying to set the narrative about the December 2025 massacre in Australia at Bondi Beach.

By Antony Loewenstein
Declassified Australia

As Australia approaches the one-year anniversary of the Bondi massacre, a new book aims to set the narrative for the attack itself and why it happened. Written by Murdoch News24and The Australian journalist Sharri Markson and pro-Israel lobbyist Alex Ryvchin, Bondi Terror is a political weapon wrapped in seemingly innocent packaging.

The roughly first half of the book tells the before, during and after the Dec. 14, 2025 slaughter at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, allegedly committed by father-son ISIS extremists. Parts of this section are moving, haunting and highly disturbing. Fifteen innocent civilians were murdered on that day in a hateful act of anti-Semitism and politicised violence.

But the second part of the book claims to explain why the massacre happened and this is where it runs into troubling assumptions, deeply relevant to Declassified Australia’s perspective.

Markson and Ryvchin claim that it was “inevitable” an attack on Australian Jews would happen because the warning signs were ignored by the Albanese government.

Pro-Palestine protests, including the historic march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge that saw up to 300,000 Australians calling for an end to the genocide in Gaza, are viewed as a deliberate provocation in the face of Zionist, Jewish Australians, causing unease and danger. The solution? Prosecutions for daring to oppose Israeli actions, a foreign nation on the other side of the world, that some Jews view as their “homeland.”

Intelligence failures are examined, and it’s legitimate to ask if signs were missed about the alleged killers, but only “official” voices are heard and interviewed from the heart of the intelligence apparatus, rather than more sceptical perspectives who could expose genuine criticisms of the intelligence and security agencies as well as the bloated budgets and narratives that are prevalent in the Murdoch world.

The former ASIO source, Marcus, could shine a light on what he claims are the profound failures of his former employer.

The book barely discusses what’s been happening in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Iran or across the Middle East since Oct. 7, 2023, beyond explaining that Israel was attacked by Hamas and has been fighting a defensive war ever since.

In this worldview, it’s impossible to imagine why so many Australians are outraged with the daily violence, humiliation, torture, rape and mass murder of Palestinians by the Israeli army, often filmed for entertainment by Israeli soldiers and posted on social media. If a person supports these actions, denies them or argues that they’re justified, and I hear this argument often in the Zionist world, any opposition to Israel is dismissed as anti-Semitism and warranting of censure.

The book was launched by News Corp Chairman Lachlan Murdoch and celebrated by his many outlets. Unspoken by him or the book but certainly implied is that a majority of Australians who now oppose Israeli violence, according to a recent Pew poll, fail to understand that Jewish Australians face unprecedented threats and demonisation, though they argue through no fault of their own.

There’s little to no reckoning with the fact that every self-described mainstream Zionist organisation in Australia, and across the world, has offered full-throated backing of Netanyahu’s war, with barely any opposition to the litany of war crimes that Israeli soldiers have committed. This will come with a cost in our society.

I’ve lost count of the number of people asking me why these hardline Jewish groups don’t see Palestinians deserving to live. Israelis are therefore seen as heartless killers, a dangerous, though not untrue impression, that shows the catastrophe of Zionism and its toxic reality.

Anti-Semitism is real, worrying and worsening but the solution isn’t to bully or shut down critical voices — the pro-Israel lobby specialises in these activities and then wonders why they’re so hated in the wider community — but encourage a robust discussion on the actions of a nation whose prime minister is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity.

If freedom of speech means anything, it must include the right to condemn a state on the other side of the planet that’s committing war crimes with the assistance of Australian F-35 fighter jet parts.

A moral reckoning in the mainstream Jewish community must address how and why so many prominent Jews have fully backed Netanyahu’s scorched-earth policies in Palestine. This book doesn’t want to have that conversation, preferring to focus on the Bondi massacre and the pro-Palestine majority who despise Israel, not Jews, for flattening Gaza in the name of self-defence.

What happened at Bondi on Dec. 14 last year was an abomination, showing the dangers of radicalisation in the name of Islamist piety.

But a complete unwillingness to even engage on what Zionism is and how it’s brutally practiced in the West Bank and Gaza turns this book into a political document that could be used to silence anybody who dares challenge Netanyahu and his government of far-right fanatics. Many backers of the Royal Commission on anti-Semitism and Social Cohesion clearly want legal restrictions on speech around Israel, Zionism and Palestine.

Australians deserve better.

Judaism has been defamed in the name of the Israeli occupation. It only helps the Jewish supremacist agenda to acquiesce in its continuation.
