Former Australian and UK prime ministers Scott Morrison and Boris Johnson have arrived in Israel, saying they are there to express solidarity with the Netanyahu government amid its conflict with the Palestinian militant group, Hamas.

It is the first visit by an Australian politician to the country since 7 October when Hamas launched a brutal attack against Israeli civilians in its southern region, killing 1,400. The current British prime minister, Rishi Sunak, visited on 19 October.

 

The former prime ministers touched down in Ben Gurion airport early Sunday morning, local time, where they were greeted by Israel’s former ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon.

Massacre of the Innocents

The UN is calling the Israel-Hamas war a ‘graveyard of children’…. an adult conflict, in which the young are suffering most. What we see on our TV screens every night is impossible to watch. Did Netanyahu see the young lad who had just carried the decapitated body of his friend from the rubble. If so, what did he think? He almost certainly thought the same as Natali Bennet the former Israeli prime minister who said to a reporter on Sky News: “Are you seriously asking me about Palestinian civilians? What is wrong with you? We’re fighting Nazis”.  

In other words, there are no civilians, there are no innocents, all Palestinians, including children, are the antithesis of us, all deserve and need to be exterminated. In fact, in this logic, there is no entity that can be called Palestine, there are no peoples to be called Palestinians. This is not just the slaughter of innocents, it is the annihilation of innocence, it is the breeding ground of the next generation of retributive violence and of lives lived out of pure hatred.

It is past time that truths were stated with utmost clarity.

1. Violence accomplishes nothing other than cementing hatred and vengeance for another generation. The children who have not been slaughtered will have been unbearably traumatised. Their anger and hatred will fester until it breaks forth again. Israel is in the process of training another generation capable of October 7 atrocities. The late Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks penned Not in God’s Name. He argued violence can and should never be perpetrated in the name of religion. Using sacred text as motivation for the slaughter in Gaza is exactly what Israeli leadership and their rightwing Christian supporters are doing.

2. Boris Johnston and Scott Morrison, you are wrong, you are so wrong, this ghastly suffering and violence did not start on October 7, 2023. Its context began with the Balfour declaration of 1917, while the wheels of dislocation and forced removal were set in concrete with the UN partition of 1948. Half the partition was delivered, after 70 years, the Palestinian half still awaits delivery. Since then, Palestinians have lost 78% of their land, those forced out have become refugees, many of them living in forced isolation in Gaza. These refugees, and children of refugees, are now being mercilessly bombed in Gaza City. If you are forced to live as a refugee (for many in view of their ancestral home on the other side of the fence) in an overpopulated open prison, with no capacity to care for yourself, and no hope for the future, would you not be angry?

3. Hamas does not control Gaza, Israel does. Israel determines who can move and who must stay. Israel determines what provisions are allowed in, or out. Israel controls energy and telecommunications. Israel controls the water. Israel determines fishing rights, etc. Within these impossibly restricted circumstances Hamas is the body citizens rely on for medicine, education, and other humanitarian needs. Do citizens of Gaza support Hamas? They probably do, why would they not? Who else is going to speak for them or act for them? The media and western politics are too lazy, or too beholden to Zionist interests, to distinguish between Hamas’ military and civilian wings.

4. Israel does not have the right to defend itself in lands it illegally occupies or in relation to people it illegally controls through siege. In the last few days, a member of the Knesset has suggested that illegal Settlers, together with the Israeli military disrupt or destroy the Palestinian olive harvest, while another member of the Knesset suggests Netanyahu ‘nuk’ Gaza. Should it not be the other way around? Palestinians have every right to defend themselves against forced removal from their land and livelihoods. Remember, Palestinians are defending their right to remain on 22% of original Palestine. They are not threatening one inch of the 78% now called ‘Israel’. Yes, Netanyahu, Natali Benett, and your erstwhile supporters, the land’s name was Palestine, the Jerusalem Post was originally called the Palestine Post and before that the Palestine Bulletin.

5. “Terrorist” has become an anti-Palestinian racial slur. Its use deserves the same condemnation as antisemitic slurs. I know members of Australian Federal and State parliaments who have spoken in support of Palestinian rights have been accused of being terrorist supporters by fellow parliamentarians. This is outrageous. Palestinians are not terrorists for objecting to their homes being bulldozed and their lands confiscated, or to being generationally traumatised in an open gaol.

6. Antisemitism is weaponised, while discrimination and diminution of Palestinians is ignored, even applauded.

7. Boris Johnson, Palestinian supporters have fallen into foggy morality. Morality was never your strong suit, nor indeed was it yours Scott Morrison. No, we have not forgotten the unspeakable horrors of the holocaust. However, we insist it is morally reprehensible to relieve collective European guilt, by expecting Palestinians to pay the full cost.

8. Netanyahu must go.

• He must go because he has sought to control his own judiciary, ignore democratic separation of powers, and has put any remaining semblance of democratic identity in question.
• He must go because the loss of intelligence and security on October 7 happened on his watch.
• He must go because of his callous attitude to the lives of Israeli hostages.
• He must go because he apparently lacks any semblance of genuine humanity.
• And above all else he must go because his mindset will block any chance of an acceptable future for Palestinians and Israelis alike.

The inescapable truth is that Israel cannot extinguish Palestinian resistance by violence, any more than the Palestinians can win an Algerian-style liberation war: Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs are stuck with each other. The only thing that can save the people of Israel and Palestine is a political solution that recognises both as equal citizens, and allows them to live in peace and freedom, whether in a single democratic state, two states, or a federation. So long as this solution is avoided, a continuing degradation, and an even greater catastrophe, are all but guaranteed.

It is this solution that the US, Australia and all Israel’s ‘friends’ must insist on, and if refused, must activate all economic and diplomatic levers at their disposal to achieve.

In 2000, the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that Shayetet 13 veterans had an unusually high occurrence of cancer and other serious illnesses compared to the general population. The IDF subsequently launched a commission of inquiry. It was suspected that the cause was due to soldiers training in the heavily polluted Kishon River, which until the early 1990s was used by the unit for swimming and diving exercises. At the same time petrochemical facilities in Haifa were regularly dumping toxic chemicals into the river. The commission of inquiry failed to reach a firm conclusion and stated that it did not find statistical evidence that diving in the Kishon River caused cancer. A compromise was subsequently reached in which some of the soldiers were recognized as having contracted illnesses due to their military service while others were not. Over the following years, veterans who were not recognized as well as civilian fishermen who worked in and around the river repeatedly filed unsuccessful lawsuits against the government and the companies responsible for the pollution.[57][17]

In December 2021, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz ordered a new investigation of the matter. The probe found that pollution had indeed been responsible for the high rates of illness, concluding that the soldiers' exposure to toxic chemicals in the Kishon River was so extreme as to be "incomparable to any other case like it." As a result, the Israeli Defense Ministry decided to recognize every veteran who had trained in the Kishon River and subsequently contracted an illness, regardless of type, as a disabled veteran.[57]

Scott Morrison’s heartless yearning for Armageddon     By Reb Halabi

 

I was wondering what was taking prominent Christian Zionists so long to visit Israel. And then I saw him…Scott Morrison landing with the arrogance of someone totally convinced he’s betting on the winning horse.

Morrison has never shied away from his Christian Zionist beliefs, and nor should he…in private. But when he had the power…in public…he declared Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel and gave unwavering support for the State of Israel. This was a religious-political decision that bulldozed decades of diplomacy and careful attention to religious and cultural sensitivities of the three monotheistic faiths. And he’s at it again.

For those unfamiliar with the term Christian Zionism (CZ) it may sound confusing. It is not a blend of Judaism and Christianity, yet they serve a purpose for each other and make very comfortable bed mates. Christian Zionists believe that Christ will return to earth in a place called Megiddo, which happens to be smack in the middle of Israel. From Megiddo we get the term Armageddon; and that never ends well. There are of course, different interpretations within CZ but generally they wait impatiently for the End-Times to occur so that they can be taken to heaven to be with Christ.

This is one such exegesis of End-Times: First the Rapture occurs which is Christ taking all Christian believers to heaven. Then seven years of tribulation on earth unfold with violence, lawlessness and unrestrained evil and a final battle – Armageddon. Christ then returns to earth for a thousand-year reign. Finally, Christ will ascend into heaven with those who believe in him. Jews have the opportunity to convert or be damned to hell during the tribulation. There’s no mention or accounting for the Muslims because the Qur’an had not been written when the scribes penned the violent book of Revelation. “Wars and rumours of wars” are to herald the imminent Rapture and that is perhaps why Morrison has decided to visit Israel now. He’s not there to support Jews or Muslims, but for himself and his fellow Christian Zionist believers.

It may sound like science fiction to many readers but those who believe it take it very, very seriously. And that means those outside their thinking have to endure the ramifications of such religious zealotry. The influence of Christian Zionism on Israel is evidence of the fallout of religion on the rest of humanity who think differently. CZs have funded illegal Jewish settlements in the Occupied Territories for years. They fund tours and conferences in Israel for the many eager Christians who want to walk the area where Christ is to return. They unflinchingly uphold an apartheid regime with the violent leader, Netanyahu, as their running mate in the race to Armageddon. Israel welcomes Christian Zionists with open arms because Israel will take on board anyone who supports them – it’s irrelevant whether Jews think Christians are deluded.

We should not be fooled by Christianity being touted as the ‘civilised faith’. This faith has caused immeasurable grief to our world; from the accusation of deicide against the Jews fostering anti-Semitism, to the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Reformation and Christian Britain’s Balfour Declaration. Christianity has a laundry list of horrors to its name, and to watch ScoMo grinning like he has won the lottery of redemption is just obscene. He is wilfully blind and ignorant to the catastrophic suffering around him because it doesn’t suit his religious agenda.

Scott Morrison must be one of the most heartless public figures Australia has had the misfortune of calling one of our own. From bushfire victims to those who’d lost their homes, he was barely touched by any of the tragedies in Australia. So now he is going to different victims on the other side of the world to not necessarily lament the 1,400 killed in Israel, but to perhaps rejoice in his belief that End-times are imminent. Of course, nobody would deny that the act of Hamas on October 7th was heinous and bloody, but why is Scott Morrison not concerned with the families of the 9,000 people (of which 4,000 were children) who have been butchered under illegal collective punishment and war crimes? Are they of the wrong faith perhaps, the wrong ethnicity or just the wrong place at the wrong time? You can’t convince religious zealots that they have somehow overlooked or ‘lost in translation’ other verses such as those on love and kindness. Salvation means everything to them; theirs, not yours. They are trying to desperately make it through the Pearly Gates before they slam shut on the rest of humanity.

You may well wonder why Israel entertains (actually fawns over) such people as ScoMo when they are worshipping in a diametrically opposed position. After all, Jews don’t believe the Messiah has come yet, but Christian Zionists believe he’s been and gone and will return. But when he does return, he will only be taking to heaven those who believe in him as their saviour. That counts the Jews out. Harsh, but that’s what the New Testament says, and Morrison and his ilk are all about the word of God and literal translation. He has said on numerous occasions that he serves God first and everyone else can take a number.

I’m not so sure that many people realise what religion is doing to us all. I wonder what God would say to Christian zealots peering into Gaza and getting giddy that the End Times are upon us all? The murder and decimation of thousands of children and the utter inhumanity visited upon Gaza by Netanyahu and his henchmen look like scenes out of Armageddon.

If Jesus ever truly existed and was just a peace-loving hippy wandering around Galilee, he surely would be horrified to know that all kinds of inhumanity and evilness has been deemed justifiable in his name. Like many people the world over at present, perhaps Jesus would be holding a sign that read, ‘NOT IN MY NAME’.

Mark Leibler is the tax lawyer, Australian Jewish community leader and staunch Israel defender behind the initiative to get six former Australian prime ministers to sign a letter in favour of Israel in Gaza. Paul Keating, the notable living exception to this line of signatories, famously outed Leibler as the man behind the strategy.

Leibler has been an influential player in Australian politics for decades, a Zionist community leader with the ear of successive prime ministers and media chiefs.

On Monday night’s Q+A program on the ABC, Leibler – in his role as chairman of the Australia Israel & Jewish Affairs Council (AIJAC) – was involved in a tense debate on Israel and Gaza, which has reverberated on social media since. Much of the criticism centred around what many viewers believed was preferential treatment given to Leibler by host Patricia Karvelas over the UN and Palestinian representatives on the show.

Anticipating a furious reaction, the ABC had even opted to close the Q+A show to a live audience.

The backlash on social media since the program ran on Monday night is in stark contrast to the treatment of the Gaza tragedy in Australia’s mainstream media which has mostly favoured the position of the Israeli government of Benjamin Netanyahu over that of the oppressed Palestinians.

It has been a vexing question for many, given the massive slaughter of Palestinian civilians and myriad human rights abuses in response to the October 7 attacks on Israel by Hamas, why the mainstream media in Australia – and indeed politicians of the two major parties – have been so partisan in favour of Israel.

An archived aide-mémoire from the Arnold Bloch Leibler (Leibler’s law firm) website provides a fascinating insight from the man himself on political lobbying.

The document appears to have been prepared for a talk at the Jewish Community Council of Western Australia (JCCWA) in Perth on July 24, 2018. Publicly identified engagements on that trip included a business breakfast where Leibler spoke about tax, an address to the Carmel School, and an address as a guest of the Friends of Israel WA. Access to these speeches are still available via the ABL website.

However, there is no mention of Leibler’s participation at the event held by the JCCWA. Mark Leibler was approached for comment for this story but was unavailable.

The speech provides a fascinating insight on the art of lobbying.
