WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced on Wednesday a new $200 million security assistance package for Ukraine that includes munitions for a new air defense system that will soon be delivered to Ukraine, among other weapons.

"I am proud that the United States has just announced its latest security assistance package for Ukraine, valued at $200 million," Austin told reporters ahead of a Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting in Brussels.

The new assistance package includes AIM-9M munitions for a new air defense system that we will soon deliver to Ukraine, as well as artillery and rocket ammunition, precision aerial munitions, anti-tank weapons, and equipment to counter Russian drones, the official added.

The same day, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the US administration is committed to supporting Ukraine for "as long as it takes" and that US allies share the "burden" of assistance with Washington.

"Our allies and Ukrainian people can rest assured that the Biden administration, with the support of a bipartisan majority of the US Congress and the American people, will work so that Ukraine receives the assistance it needs," Yellen said ahead of the annual meeting of the International Monetary fund and the World Bank, adding that Washington cannot let its support to Ukraine be interrupted.

NATO loved....

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky arrived at the NATO headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday to take part in meetings of the bloc’s defense ministers aimed at discussing further Western support for Kiev in its fight against Moscow.

Zelensky has not been to the headquarters in the Belgian capital in person since the start of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia in February 2022, only addressing gatherings of top officials from the US-led military alliance via video link.

His surprise visit to Brussels comes amid a major flareup between Israel and Palestinian armed group Hamas, which has replaced Ukraine as the main topic of international headlines since the violence escalated on Saturday. Zelensky complained in an interview with France 2 on Tuesday that “if international attention shifts away from Ukraine, one way or another, it will have consequences”for Kiev.

A video posted by Zelensky on social media shows him entering the building alongside NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, as he is greeted by dozens of people who are apparently employed at the headquarters.

BRUSSELS, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Belgium, where most frozen Russian central bank assets are held, expects to collect 2.3 billion euros ($2.4 billion) in taxes on the assets and use them to help reconstruct Ukraine, a spokesperson for Belgium's prime minister said on Wednesday.

The European Union along with the Group of Seven (G7) countries have been discussing whether they could use the interest made on over 300 billion euros of immobilised Russian public money to fund Ukraine.
