the grim reaper.....We are in room 20, on the 2nd floor of the Central Museum of the Armed Forces in Moscow. Pictured are the remains of the CIA's U2 spy plane, shot down on May 1, 1960 over Sverdlovsk (Yekaterinenburg) by S-75 Dvina surface-to-air missiles. Its pilot, Francis Gary Powers, far from swallowing the cyanide capsule that had been provided to him and not destroying the plane, preferred to parachute.

The missiles also shot down a Mig-19 which had chased the U2, Powers was first mistaken for a Soviet pilot, then the misunderstanding cleared up. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and then traded in 1962 for William Fischer, a KGB spy who had remained silent as a grave under interrogation. Convinced that Powers was dead, the White House, the CIA, NASA and the whole Yankee machine covered themselves with ridicule in this affair, claiming that the U2 was a weather reconnaissance plane (which the pilot's family also believed, who was unaware that he had been recruited by the CIA) and that the pilot had had "oxygen problems" over Turkey. NASA even went so far as to stage a media scene at the Edwards base showing a "similar" U2 with fictitious NASA markings and fake serial numbers. Bad luck, Gary Powers was alive and well and Moscow was able to dismantle the Yankee lies. We are in the 21st century. Now the modern Gary Powers are unmanned and there is no need to equip them with cyanide pills, nor a wad of rubles, nor women's jewellery (which Captain Powers had on him). The remains of the combat and spy drone MQ9-Reaper (scythe) intercepted (or shot down? Or self-deprecating?) by Russian aircraft over the Black Sea (over Ukrainian? Russian? Or international territorial waters? – we don’t know) have their place in room 20 of the Tsentral’nyy muzey Vooruzhennykh Sil. And Putin, repeating Krushchev's generous gesture, could send a piece of it to Uncle Joe.
