clowner had a plan... howard.

... And this is the central point. It isn't enough just to be "the Leader". There has to be a point to leadership. 'The Leader' has to have a plan, to inspire her or his followers with that plan and to reach out to a broader section of the community as a leader of conviction.

Sure, things can go wrong. They did for me [Alexander Downer] when I was opposition leader in 1994-95. A bad joke and a couple of gaffes and down went my approval ratings. In January 1995 my approval rating in Newspoll was 24 per cent. I thought that was pretty terminal.

I had a plan, I had my convictions but I worried. At this rate my plan would turn to dust because I'd lose the upcoming general election.

For me the big question was: is there anyone else who could stick with my plan and win an election. There was. John Howard.

---------------------

So all Howard did was to implement Clowner's views?... Rats, we got it all wrong, Margot... It should have been: "Not Happy, Alex!"

One can see that Alexander Clowner and the rest of the Liberal (conservative ritewingnuts) party are worried that despite Julia's huge "unpopularity" with the electorate, she's scoring heaps of runs on the board... Sure, one can disagree with some of her policies for immediate humanitarian reasons, nonetheless she's getting on — with far less hubris than most pollies.

One has to remember too that Julia has to deal with an incorrigible Tonicchio who, to my little brain-paste, is the worst politician this country ever has had. Even worst than Rattus the First, his hypothetical dad. Tonicchio is "clever" but devilish like an idiotic windvane with ill-intent. Till Eulenspeigel was a devout choirboy compared to Tony Abbott. Thank god for Julia being there and I am an atheist.

And please would the ABC destroy this awful show called "Julia at Home"! Burn the tapes, DVDs and whatever... If one can see a character assassination beyond the pale, this is it. It shows an extraordinary bias which of course would please Mr Chadwick...

Meanwhile, if one knows the sub-history in the dark political sewers, John Howard would never had had the gig if he had not called upon his mates Minchin and Heffernan to used a bit of the ol' arm twisting from the "dirt files"... Say no more.

of successes and achievements...

Rudd and Gillard's achievements, stuff-ups and unfinished business

What riles me most is in the list of stuff ups listed by the Murdoch press, there are items that are actually reasonable successes.

For example the insulation scheme was 99 per cent successful despite a few rorts and accidents. Of about 1 million homes insulated, about 400 developed problems and four death occured by alleged contractors' mistakes.

The school construction program was more successful than people acknowledge. Overall, even if some school were not helped as predicted by the scheme (most were), it also provided a direct stimulus to the nation's construction industry  —  which in turn helped the nation stay above the plimsoll line when the rest of the world was going apeshit (still going apeshit — because instead of helping the greater number of people as Australian Labor did, other countries helped their banking systems which in the long run was the most inequitable way to deal with the problem — believe me, I'm not an economist).

The NBN is on track, no matter what ritewingnuts like it or not.

The ETS was sunk by Tonicchio after he replaced Turnbull who was in favor of it. The ETS has been replaced, by Julia, with a carbon pricing that little Tonicchio is fighting against tooth and nail showing he still has no understanding of global warming.

The Malaysian solution may not be the best humanitarian way of dealing with boat people. But to me it was the simple solution to a greater humanitarian effort. Bringing in more official refugees from Malaysia would be honestly more "humanitarian" and would stop the illegal people trade at the same time. The High Court has made its decision and the process has also killed off Tonicchio's Nauru solution which would be far less effective and more costly than the Malaysian solution. As I mentioned before, the next step is for the government to organise ferry services between Indonesia and Xmas Island in an effort to stop accidents from happening on leaky boats...

Meanwhile in 2010, TONY Abbott was blaming NSW Liberals for his narrow election loss as the latest count showed he was just 30,000 preference votes behind. Good one NSW.

remember 'im...

The Cyprus parliament has taken the unusual step of rebuking United Nations envoy Alexander Downer over perceived bias it says is hindering long-running reunification talks.

MPs unanimously approved a resolution late Thursday decrying Downer's "one-sided and detrimental statements and actions" that they say have eroded his credibility as an impartial facilitator in the talks.
