the air we breathe...

press

more than presses...

At yourdemocracy.net.au, why do we pay so much attention to the demise of a newspaper like News of the World? Good question... Information is part of the air any democracy breathes... We need proper news — or say proper communications — to link us all into what we all share, to help us with our needs, our wants and influence our decisions. When people fill the "air" — the communicative interaction space — with crap, our society degrades — the level of what democracy should be becomes sunk in quick sands. When too many people believe in crap, the whole of society vegetates, despite advances in scientific and technological fields. Our philosophical views become narrowed and tortured exclusively into what the advertisers and politicians want us to pine for...

Some of these are reasonable to help democracy bob along. Some like Tony Abbott are totally yet cleverly irrational. Unfortunately, some of the media decide to make us breathe his foul air — with intent to fool us... mostly because of the controversy and the confrontation it stirs... Nothing to do with proper understanding of our future and of our place in the universe.

We need to be aware.

A series of L'Oreal advertisements featuring Hollywood star Julia Roberts and supermodel Christy Turlington have been banned in the UK for being overly airbrushed.

The print advertisements, featuring digitally enhanced images of the two women, were found to be misleading by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) after complaints by Jo Swinson, a Liberal Democratic MP.

The regulator said in statements on its website that the two magazine advertisements did not accurately represent what L'Oreal-owned Maybelline's The Eraser and Lancome's Teint Miracle foundations could achieve based on the information they supplied.

The advertisement were not to appear again in their current form, the regulator said.

"Pictures of flawless skin and super-slim bodies are all around, but they don't reflect reality," Ms Swinson said in a statement following the decisions.
