Peter Costello wants the Democrats to confirm their stance on the Budget tax cuts.

Recyclers and renovationistas

I'm more interested in how the Bomber is going to deal with the Black. The black economy, that is. I remember the Burwood by-election in Victoria, Dec 1999, that was caused by the resignation of Jeff Kennett, after his government's unexpected defeat. Kennett's seat went to Labor with a 10% swing. I was musing out loud about the merits of Labor, when my spouse cut me down in a most cruel way. "Of course they voted for the government, that's where the money is." Burwood is inhabited, even more in 2005, by earnest renovators with aspirations for bigger and flashier 4WD urban assault vehicles, and private schooling for the two kiddies. Renovations, black money, and wealthy tradespersons, all go together in the family-friendly suburbs. Neither the government, not the Opposition, dares to draw too much attention to the huge reservoir of money that circulates without the burden of GST. The cultural divide, that will determine a trump of change in Canberra, hasn't been marked out yet. It's in the interest of Labor, not the Tories, to throw out some dummy leads, to see the money. A risk there, holding a handful of jacks, with aces still in the deck.
