The Coalition’s election wipeout has rolled like a tidal wave through federal parliament, upending the 80-year-old partnership between the Liberal Party and Nationals, which have typically needed to join forces to win enough seats to form government.

But on Tuesday, Nationals leader David Littleproud delivered the shock announcement that the partnership was over because the Liberals had refused to agree to the Nationals’ policy demands.

Why has the split happened?

Essentially, the Nationals gave Opposition Leader Sussan Ley an ultimatum, and she refused to agree to their terms.

The Reserve Bank of Australia has cut interest rates, taking the cash rate below 4 per cent for the first time in two years.

At its May meeting, the RBA's monetary policy board decided to decrease the cash rate by 0.25 of a percentage point, to 3.85 per cent.

Following the decision, the Australian dollar dropped from around 64.5 US cents to 64.2 US cents, as expectations of further interest rate cuts rose.

"With inflation expected to remain around target, the board therefore judged that an easing in monetary policy at this meeting was appropriate," the RBA board said in its statement.

France’s foreign intelligence service has denied claims that its director pressured Telegram founder Pavel Durov to censor political content on the messaging platform.

Durov claimed on Sunday that the government of a Western European country – which he hinted was France – had asked him to block conservative Romanian content on Telegram ahead of the country’s presidential runoff. After Paris denied involvement, Durov identified Nicolas Lerner, head of the Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE), as the official behind the request.
