The United Nations has urged warring factions in Sudan to open a humanitarian corridor for aid to be transported, after reports that food supplies were looted in parts of the country.

The embattled First Republic Bank has been taken over by regulators and will be sold to JPMorgan Chase, the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) announced on Monday.

Earlier this week, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), a principal federal regulator of US financial institutions, asked a number of banks to submit bids for the struggling lender in an effort to secure a buyer before it entered receivership. A deadline for bids was set for Sunday.

JPMorgan, America’s biggest bank, will “assume all deposits, including all uninsured deposits, and substantially all assets” of First Republic, according to a statement issued by the Californian regulator.

A group of 19 Republicans in Congress has drafted a joint letter to US President Joe Biden calling for an end to aid to Ukraine in the format it has so far, The Hill wrote.

“We are deeply concerned that support for the Ukrainian military threatens further escalation <…> We will strongly oppose all future aid packages unless they are linked to a clear diplomatic strategy to end the conflict as soon as possible,” the letter reads.

According to the congressmen, the Biden administration’s current strategy – constant aid and sanctions – is leading to “escalation and even more violence” and increasing the threat of a direct confrontation with Russia.

The Wall Street Journal reporter arrested in Russia on spying charges has met his lawyers for the first time since his arrest last week, according to the newspaper’s editor-in-chief.

Evan Gershkovich, 31, was arrested on Thursday in Ekaterinburg, Russia’s fourth-largest city. He is the first US correspondent since the cold war to be detained on espionage accusations. The Journal has denied the charges.

Kiev has criticized claims by Angela Merkel, Germany’s Chancellor from 2005 to 2021, who said this week that she’d “tried with what was at my disposal to prevent” the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
