Abbott warns states of hospital revolt

The Federal Government is defending plans to scrap state and territory control of public hospital funding.

If re-elected the Government says it will require hospital budgets to be managed by local boards as part of health funding arrangements.

The idea has received a mixed response.

Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott is warning states and territories they will face a public backlash if they oppose the changes.

"There will be a people power revolt against any state government that doesn't want to empower local communities over their hospitals," he said.

Gus: Sure, local people need (and have) a say in running hospitals but to let local boards run a hospital will lead to nepotism, exclusivity, incompetence and waste of resources... Tony Abbott as usual does not know what his left brain is doing while his right one is going hypocritically desperate. If he had financed the States adequately in the first place as his role demands, the system would work much better. And let's be fair despite being starved of Federal funds, the States have done a reasonable job in running the hospital system... Yes some improvements are needed but the Federal government should have less surplus and more funds going towards hospitals.

99 per cent of the problems solved but Tony does not want to solve the problem. He wants to blame the States...

Tony is talking crap...

Drop in Fed Govt spending on public hospitals: report

A new report says the Federal Government's share of spending on public hospitals has fallen over the past decade.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) study says the Commonwealth's share fell from 45 to 41 per cent while the state and territories' contribution rose to 51 per cent.

-------------------

Gus: all the Abbott porkies cannot stop the fact that the federal government under Johnnee has worked hard towards reducing hospital efficiency by reducing its funding — all in the name of magic surpluses...

Johnnee and his merry conmen have left the States carrying the baby while the Rattus threw out the bath water. It's time for Rattus Lie-a-lot to take a bath, and possibly drown.

Commonwealth's health...

Commonwealth's total health spend greater than states': Costello

Federal Treasurer Peter Costello has defended the Government's spending on health.

An Institute of Health and Welfare study shows that over the past decade, the Commonwealth's share of hospital funding fell from 45 to 41 per cent, while the state and territories' contribution rose to 51 per cent.

But Mr Costello says the Commonwealth's total health spending is double the total amount spent by all the states combined.

"The Commonwealth not only funds public hospitals but private hospitals and Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme," he said.

--------------

Gus: Here comes the public private-enterprise shelter. The public purse is basically sponsoring the profits of private insurance companies who can go with largess on benefits never heard of before. Sure we need some chiropractors but some benefits end up very borderline... On top of that, the funding of private hospital has been done AT THE EXPENSE OF PUBLIC HOSPITAL services... This is unforgivable. Un-Australian: public moneys propping up the profits of private enterprise... Costello should have kept quiet rather than tried to save the bacon of the government, whose moneys are public moneys.
