The Queen has said she wants Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, to be known as Queen Consort when Prince Charles becomes King.

In a message marking the 70th anniversary of her reign, the Queen said it was her "sincere wish" that Camilla would have that title.

There had been suggestions Camilla would be known as Princess Consort.

But the Queen's announcement paves the way for her to be known as Queen Camilla in the future.

A Clarence House spokesman said the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall were "touched and honoured".

The Queen's message, marking her accession to the throne in 1952, directly addresses the unresolved question of the Duchess of Cornwall's future title.

"It is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort," she writes.

"Queen Consort" refers to the spouse of a ruling king and would mean "Queen Camilla" as her future title.

There has been a different practice for male consorts of a monarch, such as Prince Philip or Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, who have become Prince Consort rather than King.

The usual precedent would have been for Camilla to automatically become Queen when Charles was King, but because of uncertainty about public opinion it had been suggested that might not be the case.

Charles and Camilla were both divorcees when they married in 2005 in a civil marriage. Charles had previously been married to Princess Diana but they divorced in 1996, a year before she died in a car crash in Paris.

“If William and Harry could accept Camilla,” the headline in the Herald ran, “who are we to disagree?”

I don’t, particularly. Camilla Parker-Bowles becoming Queen of England will just be another fascinating chapter in the royal soap opera that has been running for centuries. But make no mistake, it is a chapter that will help bring an end, at last, to the absurdity of the English monarchy reigning over us in Australia in the third decade of the 21st century.

Let’s go to the part where Camilla will be crowned. There she is in Westminster Abbey chokka-blok with England’s ruling class, right beside King Charles III, and after all kinds of evocations to God, the Archbishop of Canterbury will put a crown upon her head, as the commentators and a small chunk of the Australian population swoons.

But most of the rest of us? Please.

Look, her coronation will not see her have remotely the status in these parts as her mother-in-law Her Majesty Elizabeth II. I am advised by constitutional expert Professor Anne Twomey that, “while Charles will automatically become ‘King of Australia’ and Queen Camilla will be referred to as ‘Her Majesty’, she will not be ‘Queen of Australia’ in any legal sense.”

The Duchess of Cornwall has tested positive for COVID-19, Clarence House has announced.

Camilla, 74, caught the virus for the first time just days after the Prince of Wales contracted the illness for a second time.

A Clarence House spokesman said: “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall has tested positive for COVID-19 and is self-isolating.

“We continue to follow government guidelines.”

Camilla is triple vaccinated, sources said.

The duchess carried out a string of engagements last Thursday – the day Charles tested positive.

In the education space @wlondonwelcome, a local group who support refugees, were running a cookery session.

The Duchess added the finishing touches to Loobia Polo, an Iranian rice dish.

Camilla described herself as “luckily” negative the same day, saying of her testing regime during a visit to Thames Valley Partnership in Buckinghamshire: “I’ve taken it so many times”.
