before grace, there was gladys... throw scomo out...

Gladys Berejiklian really does make the most human of mistakes. First, she got into a questionable relationship, and now she’s been caught out bitching about a work colleague in text messages. Scott Morrison is a “horrible, horrible person”, she apparently texted to an unnamed Liberal cabinet minister. “Absolute psycho,” the minister replied.

Now, I don’t have a great deal of sympathy for our Prime Minister, but OUCH.

Still, we can’t take text-bitching too seriously. I mean, which one of us hasn’t vented in a text message about what a horrible psycho our colleague/boss/parent/ex-partner/current partner/kid/friend/sibling is?

This is what text messages are for! They allow us to transfer our anger from our souls to the screen and move on with our day with a positive mental attitude. They are cathartic. They are therapeutic. They are extremely time-efficient.

Now, there is always the possibility of your bitchy texts falling into the wrong screens. For one thing, you might have a minor brain glitch and send your text to the person you are bitching about. I once sent a screenshot of a conversation about a horrible, horrible person to that horrible, horrible person, and that became a very awkward exchange. And which one of us hasn’t hit Reply All and sent our hilarious-but-caustic-and-potentially-defamatory emails to an entire office?

For another thing, your text partner might turn around and betray you. People are fickle, and a trusted friend who texts “Absolute psycho” one day might screenshot your messages the next. And they might send those screenshots to the person you’re bitching about, or to a third party or WhatsApp group or Instagram account, or to a political reporter with a direct line to the PM who shares them on national TV.

But really, that’s part of the thrill of text-bitching. You are entering a pact with another, flawed person to keep your most shameful, your most ungenerous, your most libellous self private. You know there is a risk you could be caught out. You know there is a risk that they could turn. But it is a risk you embrace with all your phone, because the rewards of text-bitching are so great.
