US President Joe Biden told reporters at a Wednesday speaking event that the passage of his hefty spending bill could've “maybe” helped elect Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the Virginia gubernatorial race.

Biden revealed during remarks on the pandemic that his “Build Back Better” agenda and bipartisan infrastructure bill should have been approved before the polls opened on Tuesday in the Old Dominion, but he wasn't entirely convinced it would have changed the minds of Trump voters who supported Republican Glenn Youngkin.

 

"I think [the spending package] should’ve passed before Election Day but I’m not sure it would have been able to change the very conservative folks who turned out in red districts who were Trump voters,” Biden admitted. “But maybe. Maybe."

 

Youngkin's victory makes him the first member of the Republican party elected to statewide office in Virginia since 2009 - a big blow to Biden and the Democratic party.

 

 

When asked if he took responsibility in McAuliffe's crushing defeat, Biden gave his reasons for the loss and why he continues to push the Democratic party to pass the infrastructure bill.

 

“People want to see change... and are upset about COVID and the price of gasoline,” Biden commented.

 

Amid the election, Youngkin focused on issues that dealt with crime and the economy, as well as how schools handle race, gender and mask mandates. While McAuliffe campaigned on cultural issues that related to abortion rights and voting reform.

 

Biden said he spoke to McAuliffe to congratulate him despite his defeat, and boasted the former governor’s 600,000 votes, which the commander-in-chief said were the most votes that any Democrat has ever obtained.

Iran has confirmed that its Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps has foiled an attempt by American forces to intercept an oil tanker, and that the vessel is now back in Iranian waters.

Iran has confirmed reports that the US had seized its tanker and transferred oil to another vessel, which was then taken to an “unknown place.”

The government said the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) had taken control of the Iranian tanker in an operation using helicopters. It was then returned to Iranian waters.

The US Department of Defense sternly rejected claims on Wednesday that American naval forces ever attempted to seize a vessel carrying Iranian oil, an allegation that was earlier pushed by Iran.

The condemnation was aired by Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby, who told reporters during a news briefing that claims made by Iranian officials were "absolutely totally false and untrue."

 

"I've seen Iranian claims they are absolutely totally false and untrue," Kirby said Wednesday. "There was no such effort by US naval assets to seize anything."

 

"It's a bogus claim," the official underscored.

 

Kirby subsequently followed up his remarks by explaining that the allegations stemmed from an October 24 incident in which the US claims involved Iranian forces seizing a Vietnamese-flagged oil tanker. 

 

"What this refers to is back on the 24th of October, US Navy assets did monitor Iranian forces, illegally boarding and seizing a merchant vessel in international waters in the Gulf of Oman," Kirby said during at the briefing.

 

Washington has maintained that it had only monitored the incident, and that US forces had acted in accordance with international law. "The only seizing that was done was by Iran," Kirby emphasized.

SAUDI CROWN PRINCE Mohammed bin Salman is enacting revenge on Democrats in general and President Joe Biden specifically for the party’s increasingly standoffish attitude toward the kingdom — by driving up energy prices and fueling global inflation.

Biden himself seemed to allude to this at a town hall event with CNN last month, during which he attributed high gas prices to a certain “foreign policy initiative” of his, adding, “There’s a lot of Middle Eastern folks who want to talk to me. I’m not sure I’m going to talk to them.”

Biden was making a not-so-veiled reference to his refusal to meet with the crown prince and acknowledge him as Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler due to his role in the grisly murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October of 2018. The move came after Biden vowed during a debate with President Donald Trump to make MBS, as he’s known, “a pariah” and represented a stark departure from Trump’s warm relations with the desert kingdom and the crown prince.
