Scott Morrison warns leaders not to break Covid reopening ‘deal’ as states call for new vaccine modelling

The prime minister says states and territories must not backtrack on the plan to ease restrictions once 70% and 80% vaccination targets are met.

Scott Morrison has hit back at claims Australia’s sluggish COVID-19 vaccination campaign is to blame for Sydney’s public health emergency, ruling out giving younger active people expedited access to the Pfizer jab.

Facing growing dissatisfaction from premiers about the supply of vaccination stocks, the Prime Minister blamed the NSW government for a failure to enforce mandatory vaccination rules to cover a driver of international aircrew who passed on the virus.

The "international aircrew" members (kept "anonymous" by the media but we know they were from a freight company called XXXXX) were not subject to quarantine and the driver got the blame...

-----------

After 46 days cooped up at Kirribilli House and The Lodge, being pummelled with blame for endless lockdowns, a bruised Prime Minister emerged from isolation this week determined to shift the narrative.

Armed with new vaccination targets and the promise of greater freedom, Scott Morrison is determined to focus debate on the future rather than the past.

With his political fate now tied to achieving the 70 per cent and 80 per cent vaccination thresholds agreed "in principle" by National Cabinet, Morrison is trying to stir the nation to get a jab, any jab, as quickly as possible.

But that doesn't mean he's necessarily willing to throw everything at it. There are limits, apparently, to how far the Prime Minister will go, as his reaction to Labor's cash-for-jab idea revealed.

He ridiculed the proposal for a $300 vaccine payment as "insulting", "a vote of no confidence in Australians" and a "game show" approach. It was the sort of political attack typical of the pre-pandemic era; if an idea has been put forward by the other side, it must be terrible.

As Scott Morrison approaches three years as Prime Minister, Australia’s largest state is approaching its ninth week of ever-tightening COVID-19 restrictions.

NSW is the most direct path to victory for the federal Coalition. Earlier this year Coalition types were suggesting up to 10 seats were in play.

No one is talking about that now.

Sydney’s citizens are racing to get vaccinated as the Delta variant continues its wildfire spread through the west and south-west of the city. Victoria’s outbreak is worsening, too.

Yes, voters also blame Premier Gladys Berejiklian for NSW’s predicament, given she was slow to lock down and realise that even ‘gold standard’ contact tracers couldn’t keep up with the spread.

But Morrison will have little to celebrate on his third anniversary on Tuesday, even though he has already eclipsed Tony Abbott, Kevin Rudd and Malcolm Turnbull, and on Saturday will surpass Julia Gillard’s reign.

the hubris wins...

Voters have swung to the Coalition and backed Prime Minister Scott Morrison on key personal measures, lifting the government’s primary vote from 38 to 40 per cent amid a debate about when to end lockdowns.

The government has gained ground among voters on its response to the pandemic and management of the economy, while Labor has seen its primary vote fall from 35 to 32 per cent.
