Scott Morrison says he admires Donald Trump as a “very practical” leader “who’s not going to waste a day” in office, and has told an American newspaper he and the US president share an instinct to help those forgotten by the forces of globalisation.

“I think we both get it,” Morrison told the New York Times, of their common understanding.

Spruiking the kind of populist credentials that swept Trump to power, Morrison said many people in both the US and Australia feel left behind by the powerful economic forces of globalisation, which have brought massive wealth to some but left others feeling poorer and disenfranchised.

“That’s what we get. The president gets that. I get it,” the prime minister told the Times columnist Maureen Dowd.

toxic cash...

European anti-corruption activists launched a campaign of street protests in France and Germany to challenge what they called irresponsible conduct and questionable business practices of the Eurozone’s biggest financial institutions.

Kristian Rouz – Anti-capitalism activists have launched “direct action” against several of the largest lenders in France and Germany this weekend in a warning against monopolization and irresponsibility in the financial sector. The activists said big banks are the root cause of financial crises and urged tougher surveillance and regulation in the banking sector.

Activists threw liquid soap and paint at window displays of several banks in Paris Saturday, vowing to continue their action across the Eurozone. French authorities called this direct action “acts of vandalism,” urging against damaging bank property.

However, activists said the collapse of Lehman Brothers in the US – which triggered the global financial crisis 10 years ago – must not be forgotten, stressing that the majority of risks and structural problems that caused the latest global recession have remained unaddressed.

“Big banks are a driving force of fiscal evasion,” Aurelie Trouve, spokeswoman for direct action group Attac France, said.

Some activists conveyed an environmental message as well, saying that big bank investments in fossil fuels might jeopardize the future of the planet and human civilization. Protesters threw orange smoke bombs and poured green liquid on Paris’ sidewalks to decry what they said is “toxic money.”

“‘I had sex with that,’ I’d say to myself. Eech.” The Guardian has obtained a copy of Stormy Daniels’ tell-all Trump memoir. In it, Daniels describes her mounting disbelief as Trump began to win primary contests in 2016 for the Republican presidential nomination. The more he won, the more sensitive the story Daniels had to tell about Trump seemed, and she began to think she might be in danger. Those moments of fear and doubt – and Daniels’ decision on the eve of the election to sign a $130,000 hush agreement – hang around a detailed description of Daniels’ alleged tryst with Trump at a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, California. In the book, Daniels writes in sometimes excruciating detail about the president’s genitals and describes her disgust with herself for letting the scene play out.

Disgraced lawyer Michael Avenatti has been convicted of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for stealing $300,000 from porn star Stormy Daniels. It’s the second criminal conviction in two years for a man liberal pundits once believed would bring down the presidency of Donald Trump.

Avenatti was found guilty by a jury in Manhattan on Friday and will be sentenced in May. Representing himself, he had argued that Daniels owed him the money in exchange for legal representation in a case against Trump, but the jury sided with federal prosecutors who said Avenatti diverted the cash into his own account and then convinced Daniels that the money hadn’t arrived.

Avenatti took the cash sum from a larger advance for Daniels’ memoir, ‘Full Disclosure,’ which details her alleged affair with Trump.

Prior to his fall from grace, liberal pundits touted Avenatti as “Donald Trump’s worst nightmare,” and a “folk hero” whose legal action against Trump would “save the country.” After attempting to scupper the Supreme Court confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh with unfounded allegations of sexual assault, Avenatti explored a run for the presidency himself in 2018, immediately before his life began to unravel.
