A former Trump campaign aide who took a guilty plea in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe was the linchpin of the FBI’s investigation of Kremlin influence in the 2016 election, new reports say.

In a drunken gossip session with an Australian diplomat in London in May 2016, Trump aide George Papadopoulos claimed that Russia held political dirt on Hillary Clinton, The New York Times said Saturday.

Months later, e-mails hacked from the Democratic National Committee showed up on WikiLeaks, and the Australians told the FBI about the Papadopoulos conversation.

The disclosure sparked the FBI’s probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, sources told the Times.

Papadopoulos, 29, pleaded guilty in October to charges of lying to the FBI about contacts he had with Russians during the 2016 campaign. He is now a cooperating witness.

The ambitious aide made many attempts to insinuate himself into Trump’s campaign, which lacked the experienced political hands typical of presidential electoral efforts, the report says.

His efforts to broker a Trump meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin were rebuffed. But Papadopoulos succeeded in helping organize a September 2016 visit with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Republicans allege that a shady dossier — financed by the Clinton campaign as a piece of anti-Trump opposition research — was the real impetus for the FBI investigation.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called Friday for a new special prosecutor to examine whether the Obama administration used the dossier as evidence in a secret federal court hearing.

Alexander Downer lied many times when a minister for the Australian Howard government. He is as trutworthy as "woodworms in a cripple's crutch". Alexander will say any crap with conviction because he has no idea... Remember the AWB saga, Saddam's WMDs and many other stuff where he said what he was told to say...

He was an embarrassment...

Here I have a sneaky suspicion that this drunken revelation is yet another manufactured false facts coming out of the CIA and other "intelligence" sources to discredit Trump team and show a "connection" with Russia, in regard to the US Presidential elections. It's of course fabrication of the hindsight order... That this boozy "fact" comes to light after nearly two years make it as real as the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

like a sadfly...

always annoying

this toon, like the one at top, done 12 years ago... Nothing new...

a flat-footed chesty bond...

Alexander Downer, our man in London, is a renowned political opportunist and business gamester.

Media reports that he is embarrassed about being recently outed as a major player in the Trump election campaign's ongoing "Russiagate" saga are arrant nonsense.

It would come as no surprise to discover that Australia's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Alexander Downer himself was responsible for leaking the story about his boozy assignation with Trump campaigner and likely Russian stooge, George Papadopoulos, to the New York Times in the first place, albeit by a circuitous route.

He's leaving his post in a few weeks and the free international publicity is a timely refresh on Brand Downer and his elite business interests. He knows when to fold them. He knows when to roll them.

Most likely, Downer reveal of his boozy night with George Papadopoulos is a "fake news" item based on an event that may contain a smidgin of truth — the colour of his underpants. All this reveal is designed to give an extra push to the "Russiagate" narrative, that despite a lot of furious Mueller "activities", is loosing traction — with not a single piece of evidence. So, Downer lies, fudges, steals with a grand fabricated morality that he loosely bases on the "national interest"... it's crap.

lying with prune regularity in the toilet of the FBI...

The precise details of Alexander Downer's role triggering the FBI probe into alleged dealings between Russia and Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign team will remain shrouded in secrecy, with the Australian government refusing to “neither confirm nor deny” the existence of diplomatic cables that likely cast light on Mr Downer's role sparking the inquiry.

Mr Downer, Australia’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom, became a key figure regarding the question of how the Trump-Russia investigation began, after details emerged of his London bar room chat with a young Trump campaign aide, George Papadopoulos.

During their May 2016 conversation, Mr Downer was told that Russia had a dirt file on Hilary Clinton, including hacked Democratic Party emails.

But Mr Downer, the foreign affairs minister in the Howard government, is understood to have taken several weeks to officially relay Mr Papadopoulos’ information to Canberra via a diplomatic cable.

The reason for his delay is not known. However, it is possible Mr Downer only realised the significance of Mr Papadopoulos’ Russian claims after Wikileaks released hacked Democrat emails that embarrassed the Clinton campaign in late July, 2016.

Downer is a liar. Remember his "Saddam has weapons of mass destruction" nauseating repeat while he would have been a dork not to know that Saddam did not have any.  Okay, he could be a dork or a liar — or more realistically BOTH. Either way his "testimony" is as good as a dead pig in the sky or an old pie in a sewer.

a snitch always remains a snitch...

FBI agents reportedly interviewed Alexander Downer as part of their investigation into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the US presidential election.

Within hours of the FBI opening its probe, then known by its codename Crossfire Hurricane, it secretly sent two agents to London to question Australia's then-high commissioner to the UK, with only a handful of officials aware of the mission, according to the New York Times.

The Times says top Australian officials broke diplomatic protocol to allow the agents to question Mr Downer.

The results, summarised and sent to Washington on August 2 last year, reportedly laid the foundations for what is now special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.
