pissing in each others pocket...

freedom

Apparently, Bibi Netanyahu and Donald Trump haven’t read any Frost.  More’s the pity.  They could each save themselves billions to know that walls don’t keep invaders, infiltrators and criminals out.

Take China for example.  An emperor built the Great Wall, spending the ancient equivalent of billions to keep out the northern barbarian Mongols.  But it didn’t work.  They simply went around the wall or through it when they could find a traitorous general to open the gates for them.

In military terms, nations built defensive “walls” to keep enemy nations out: France had the supposedly impregnable Maginot Line and the Israel had the Bar Lev Line.  Neither worked.  The Nazi blitzkrieg obliterated French defenses and Egyptian forces simply swept through the defensive fortifications Israel had built.

The Nazis walled Jews into the Warsaw ghetto.  They built a wall to further their aims to gradually annihilate the Jews of the city.  But that wall didn’t work either.  In 1942, the resistance began an uprising which lasted for three weeks.  At the end, the Nazis won a pyrrhic victory.  Yes, they exterminated the Jews of Warsaw.  But the uprising will live through history as a bold, courageous gesture of resistance.  Those who revolted are still known by name and revered for their heroism.  While those who built that wall, the Nazis, are reviled as monsters.

advising the bad boy...

Elon Musk, who is one of only a few tech executives on Donald Trump’s business advisory team, is also now part of a manufacturing jobs initiative announced Friday by the White House.

The White House released a list of nearly 30 business leaders, some of whom met with Trump on Monday, who it says will help advise a new manufacturing initiative on “how to best promote job growth.” The tech-industry names on the list are Musk, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich and Dell Technologies founder CEO Michael Dell.

Is Musk, the clean energy evangelist, really all in with an administration whose leader has dismissed climate change?

Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX and a member of the PayPal Mafia, is a popular figure in tech and in business. But he is getting some flack for cooperating with Trump, whose other views and policies are controversial.

One Twitter exchange went like this:

“dude, what are you doing? You are losing #credibility by the minute. Come back to the #light !,” commented suzieofficial.

To which Musk replied:

“Yeah, am hearing this from a lot of people & it’s getting me down. I’m just trying to make a positive contribution & hope good comes of it.”

That’s on top of what happened earlier this week, when Musk got blowback for his tweeted support of Donald Trump’s nomination of Rex Tillerson for secretary of state. Musk defended himself by saying that Tillerson, a longtime Exxon executive, is competent, has admitted that climate change is real, and has voiced support for a carbon tax — which is something that Musk has championed.

more unsettling settlements...

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sanctioned building of 3,000 new settlements in the territory of the West Bank in addition to the recently approved 2,500 units.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in January, Israeli authorities approved the construction of 2,500 housing units in the occupied West Bank despite December's UN Security Council resolution calling on Israel to immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
