Tony Abbott would do well to take a leaf out of Julia Gillard's book and, for the sake of his party, go graciously. But is he sticking around for another tilt at the leadership, asks John Hassan, and will he get another dream run in the media?

TOLSTOY ONCE bravely wrote to the Tsar saying: 

“for the sake of Russia please go.” 

But Annabel Crabb’s weekend article implores Tony Abbott to stay, it seems, because he amuses her. Annabel, for one, welcomes Abbott staying but I, one of many, implore Abbott to recognise he is a man out of his time if not a man out of his mind and deplore his presence in our national parliament.

How well I remember Paul Keating asking when Abbott was opposition leader what that dopey lot in the press gallery were doing when it came to Abbott’s policy on global warming:

….”what’s the media doing about this? What about that sleepy press gallery of ours? ….. where is the quality of the national debate and why isn’t Abbott being flogged by the media for this position?”

Laura Tingle and many on line contributors are exempted from this criticism but Annabel’s article – written with the effervescence of a head girl’s tribute to a departing headmaster in the school magazine – is about a headmaster most of the school detested.

Tony Abbott's one-man conclave on his own future broke up last night after four long months of deliberations. A puff of blue smoke! Hearts soared among the decimated Coalition soldiers of the Resistance, as they gathered in their makeshift camps and slapped each other on the back.

Tony Abbott! Staying and fighting! And with enough of the old razzle-dazzle to continue his tradition of giving everyone something to splutter about at Australia Day barbecues!

Very funny Annabel. The little shit is going to make some people's Australia Day or Invasion Day even more miserable by announcing he's staying on... But we hope that most of the people of Warringah will have the common sense of booting him out for good. 

But really, tell us why you wanted him to stay on in the first place? Was it because:

a) you find him suppositorily amusing?

b) he is providing a gold mine for cartoonists, satirists and stand up comedians? or

c) because you're a closet ultra-right wing "journalist" who does not like wind turbines?

Fresh from giving new hope to disaffected conservative Liberals by staying in federal politics, Tony Abbott will fly to the United States on Tuesday to gee-up one of the religious right's most reactionary bodies, the Alliance Defending Freedom.

Mr Abbott, who is being accompanied by wife Margie, will give a speech on the topic of "the importance of family" to the pro-Christian, Republican-aligned lobby, which opposes abortion, wants to end gay marriage and is pushing to roll back some feminist advances.

Talk about returning in the dark ages, and will Tony mention the monarchy?... This man is publicly becoming the turd he was before being booted out of the Prime Minister gig... Time to put him — and us — out of our misery.
A bit of advice to the religious mob in the US. TONY ABBOTT IS A FAKE, A LIAR, A DECEITFUL VERY DISHONEST PERSON. Abbott was actually a bit like your Trump, except contrary to Trump who managed to become a billionaire, Tony never earned any real cash apart from acting as a lying bully gamey politician, and also as a closet misogynist.

General Morrison began his speech by acknowledging that Australia Day was one of "emotional conflict" for Indigenous Australians, rather than a time of celebration.

In a surprise move, he also vowed to make the Australian republic a priority for the year.

"With great respect to those who don't share my views ... I will lend my voice to the republican movement in this country.

"It is time, I think, to at least revisit the question so we can stand both free and fully independent amongst the community of nations."

General Morrison later acknowledged to reporters that he knew he was courting controversy by backing an Australian head of state, but said he was a member of the Australian Republican Movement.
