the unbudgeable budgies...

gaymalcolm

In his recent Michael Kirby Lecture, Malcolm Turnbull made an excellent case for same-sex marriage that came to an appalling conclusion, civil unions.

Part of the problem is that Turnbull has his facts wrong.

For example, his claim that civil unions are "better than nothing" has been shown by the overseas experience to be false.

Studies into the impact of existing civil union schemes in the US and Europe have all come to the same conclusion: civil unions have failed to fulfil their promise of equality and can actually make things worse.

and the bride wore white...

United States Democratic representative Barney Frank has become the first sitting congressman to enter into a same-sex marriage, wedding his long-time partner James Ready.

Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick officiated the ceremony.

Texas Democratic congressman Al Green, who attended the wedding, said Mr Patrick added some levity by saying Mr Frank, 72, and Mr Ready, 42, had vowed to love each other through Democratic and Republican administrations alike, and even through appearances on Fox News.

"Barney was beaming," Mr Green said.

He said Mr Frank, a champion of gay rights and the sweeping reform of Wall Street, shed a tear during the ceremony and the couple embraced after exchanging their vows.

"It was no different than any other wedding I've attended when you have two people who are in love with each other," Mr Green said.

divided opinions...

Meanwhile, some of my gay friends are against the notion of gay marriage... They find marriage in general as a tradition on the way out... I have been told a civil union would be okay, but they point out as much legal rights have being accorded to unmarried gay people than to unmarried/married/divorced heterosexual geezers...

But gay "marriage" is not just about "rights" but about the recognition of self into a tradition that has excluded gays for centuries... It may be worth it for some, some do not want it...
