IT HAD been his passion since he was a boy, inspired by his mother's love of antiques, but after collecting a vast array of Napoleonic objets d'art and recreating his very own ''Imperial palace'' in South Yarra, Liberal party powerbroker Michael Kroger is finally over his ''Napoleon complex''.

At an auction in the shadow of the grand Chateau de Fontainebleau just outside Paris yesterday, the Michael Kroger Collection, including imperial eagles, towering bronze candelabras, antique clocks, vases, paintings, chairs, sideboards, elaborate gilt mirrors and military paraphernalia, went under the hammer, raising more than $500,000 for the businessman.

Taking place not far from where Napoleon Bonaparte bid a teary farewell to his empire nearly 200 years ago, Kroger's emotions were considerably less bleak, especially with several lots earning well above the reserve and his new girlfriend, conservative commentator and former fellow ABC board member Janet Albrechtsen, offering support.

A clock in Levanto marble with rich gilt and bronze decoration inspired by La Fontaine's fables, featuring animal characters such as the Fox, Stork and Wolf, sold for €21,875($30,280), nearly twice its reserve.

Of course the Kroger and the Albrechtsen of this world are rabid ritewingnutters... They both hate Labor and both misundertand climate change... No such proper science enters their little brains.
But high style from a past despot is possibly the essence of present denial and rabid diversion. Hail Napoleon ...

In a 2009 interview with the Napoleonic Society, conducted before he separated from wife Ann Peacock, who he described as ''less than enthusiastic'' about the collection, Kroger explained his interest in the historic figure.

''I found it extraordinary he was surrounded by such extraordinary brutality and yet at the same time was a man of such remarkable refinement and taste,'' Kroger said.

The concern about Kroger's comments is that this man is considered to be a Liberal heavyweight; a sophisticated political architect.

But in the real world, supremo Kroger is more an anachronism, indicative of occified archaic thinking, that is symptomatic of the burgeoning irrelevance of the old two-party system.

He is an exemplar of a political philosophy that seeks to impose its views upon the electorate, gagging debate and dissent, locking out ordinary citizens and others from the decision making process in the venal pursuit of absolute power at the cost and inevitable corruption of democracy, as witnessed in the megalomaniacal demand by Attorney-General George Brandis to oversee all requests seeking advice from Solicitor-General Justin Gleeson, including those from the prime minister and governor-general.

These self-satisfied dudes think we should be grateful that they let us out of our cages to vote every three years, double dissolution, referendum or so. The election campaigns of both the Coalition and Labor are proof positive that dullards and ruthless carpetbaggers rule.

I would propose that Napoleon, despite his delusions of grandeur and his dreadful Napoleonic Code in Louisiana, improved a few things like education, sciences and had the concept of Europe under control until the Brits and the Russians kicked him in the arse.

Brexit is Napoleon's revenge... History is full of undercurrents which a brute like Emperor Kroger would have no idea of, despite his machinations to get mates on the parliamentary payroll.
