smokin' .....Goldman Sachs will incur further damage to its reputation today when it releases details of a $5 billion bonus package for staff for the first three months of the year. Fabrice 'Fabulous Fab' Tourre, the now-suspended London-based banker targeted by US authorities for his role in an alleged $1 billion mortage-hawking scandal, can expect to receive a substantial slice of the cake. Far from dying down, the controversy surrounding Goldman is intensifying. The UK's Financial Services Authority is launching its own investigation into the sale of toxic sub-prime deals that exacerbated the global economic meltdown while Conservative and Liberal Democrat politicians are demanding that Goldman is suspended from working for the British government until the outcome of the US case is resolved. Timing of Goldman Sachs Fraud Charge Highly Political meanwhile ..... Goldman Sachs, the world's biggest investment bank that is now assailed by accusations of fraud, is poised to reignite controversy over bankers' bonuses by paying its staff more than £3.5 billion for just three months' work. The bumper payouts will equate to about £110,000 a head for the firm's 32,500 employees worldwide, with a handful of top traders expected to be in line for multi-million-pound bonuses. Close to £600m is expected to be paid to the group's 5,500 London-based staff for the first three months of this year. This is on a par with their remuneration in 2007, the last year of the boom. The revelation of the enormous pay deals comes as Goldman prepares for a legal battle with the US government. The group was sued on Friday by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Wall Street regulator, over claims it defrauded investors of $1 billion. Goldman denies the charges.

Just an opinion John.
As an ordinary person, I naturally haven't any expert knowledge as to the Earth's crust and what effects it. However, recently we have been advised of "minor quakes" on the Australian mainland which, perhaps because of the media, I was not previously aware.
So trying on some reasoning and logic, I wonder if the planet is a ball with enormous power within its bowels, what is to stop that power from releasing its pent up energy?
And if energy in the centre of Earth is unstable; building up or just plain dorment, our scientists must surely be given as much latitude as possible to advise the sceptics of their stupidity.
It seems to be an undeniable fact that the Industrial Revolution has contributed enormously to the climate change and the dangers of further eruptions and world wide disasters.
It is not just a coincidence that the pollution of Earth is killing off the "weaker" natural species of our planet and in particular those who have co-existed with nature for millions of years.
Logic tells us that the weakest will - by degression sometime be the strongest - and then? Will Howard and Abbott and Turnbull still be alive?
After all, it is all about money - what shall it profit them?
God Bless Australia and make the Rudd government lead the way to survive. NE OUBLIE.
Who did Jesus die for?
I am probably an agnostic at this time in my life where I have enough education and scientific proof that many of my indoctrinated "facts" could not be true.
Surely then, all faiths which depend on miracles to maintain their believers are hard put to exist?
Do any of the major Churches of the world produce more miracles to support the old rusty ones which have long since been forgotten?
If our planet is in danger of self-destruction, what is the opinion of all faiths?
I merely think that religion has a very strong influence with millions of people and, if they believe that we a safe from the industries which, in many cases, pays them a pittance - we are in trouble.
God Bless Australia and give us our financial independence from Golman Sachs. NE OUBLIE.
