the abbott's family...Like Uncle Fester, Abetz seems to carry an electrical charge and can doubtlessly light up a bulb in his mouth. Then there is the notion that the old hands of the Howard era should be shown the door. Poppycock. Even though he himself admitted they had been, at times, both "polarising" and "controversial", Abbott seemed delighted to announce the resurrection of three political poltergeists: Philip Ruddock, Kevin Andrews, and Bronwyn Bishop. Ruddock must surely be cast as Thing, the disembodied hand whose role it is to help with everyday chores such as keeping notes in meetings of shadow cabinet and provide friendly pats on the shoulder. Andrews, for his part, is Pugsley, the target of constant familial attempts to kill him off politically – which he seems perversely to enjoy. He's not blameless in this either. The original Pugsley had his sister's favourite Marie Antoinette doll guillotined, supposedly sparking the cycle of violence. Bronwyn Bishop, whose new role of seniors instantly revived memories of kerosene baths, is Grandmama, famed for dealing in potions (mostly Clarins), spells, hexes and fortune telling. Sophie Mirabella, who is admittedly more Monday than Wednesday, nonetheless shares a deadpan wit and killer instincts with the Addams' daughter. And as for Lurch – the prized butler and jack-of-all-trades at risk of botching some tasks due to his size and strength? Come on down, Barnaby Joyce. ---------------------------------- "You rang?..." Ah, I love the Adams Family... as long as they stay in their crummy crumbling mansion — hide under the carpet and are in black and white... But to me the Abbott's family is more like the Beverly Hillbillies without an oil well...

into the tent of egomaniacs...
The Federal Government is trying to size up its new opponents after yesterday's reshuffle by new Opposition leader Tony Abbott.
Mr Abbott has convinced outspoken Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce to enter the tent as the Opposition's finance spokesman, a job that will bind him to shadow cabinet solidarity.
Mr Abbott says Senator Joyce is "original", "authentic" and probably Australia's "most accomplished retail politician".
Phrases such as "a piece of policy that comes direct from the manic monkey cafe of inner suburban nirvanaville" have seen Senator Joyce's profile skyrocket.

Oh Boy... we're in trouble... The bush bard has been awoken with barbed wire in his billy tin... I'm sure Tony-climate-change-is-crap won't want Barnaby to "toe the line of solidarity" too much... Tony wants him for what Barnaby is — an inspirational maverick larrikin with big boots, a big hat, a big mouth and a small... ego.
See toon at top.
Well said Gus.
G’day Gus,
I quote your entry concerning the toon:

How true?
The most encouraging attitude of “Your democracy” is that free speech is not only an opinion but a considered fact. People should be aware that they are responsible for what they say and as such, should be sure to claim “opinion” as the media rarely does.
The vitality in what you write about what I consider to be the current “remnants of Howard’s New Order” indicates that you too are very concerned at the possibility of these neo-conservatives obtaining Government of our people, yet again, could be real. Struth.
Voltaire’s suggestion that a “Government of a people is what they deserve” is still vibrant when you consider that we, the Australian people, allow the media to control our thoughts and opinions. But, how do we stop that?
The unsubstantiated lies of the “free press” allows unscrupulous business people (like the media) to not only influence but, to control the information that a “democracy” needs to make a genuine decision as to who and what should control our future. Therefore, that is not true democracy? Consider the all consuming Murdoch media in our country.
So, as Libya and Iran state, as long as the US and others have the power of veto - that is not democracy! Who can challenge that fact?
And, can we really say that Australia and any other nation in the world – is a true democracy?
Just a marketing ploy. Whoever may be the information controlling body - and name them by any title you care to use – Capitalist – Communist – Dictatorship – Socialist or a shattered country in Africa – the eventual result is practical efforts of dissent. Is it not?
God Bless Australia. NE OUBLIE.
ding dong...
Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has signalled the Opposition's finance spokesman, Barnaby Joyce, will have to restrict his comments now that he is in shadow cabinet.
The Government has attacked Senator Joyce for saying the United States might default on its loans, sparking an economic Armageddon, and that Queensland might also be unable to pay back its debts.
Financial Services Minister Chris Bowen labelled Senator Joyce an extremist and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said his comments could have serious implications.
Mr Abbott has refused the Government's demands to either back Senator Joyce's remarks or repudiate them, but indicated Senator Joyce will have to temper his remarks from now on.
"Shadow ministry and shadow cabinet solidarity starts now," he said.
