malcolm wins...Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull has urged his colleagues to unite behind him after a turbulent 24 hours for the Liberals which climaxed in the party's rejection of a move to hold a leadership spill. The motion to hold a leadership ballot was brought on by backbencher Wilson Tuckey, but was voted down in the party room by 48 to 35 votes. Mr Turnbull's leadership has been in dire trouble since he declared the Opposition would vote for the Government's amended emissions trading scheme (ETS) after a marathon day of meetings yesterday. But after hanging onto his position today, Mr Turnbull told his colleagues it was time to focus on the Government.

courageous malcolm...
Even Mr Turnbull's supporters shake their heads at how it came to this. They marvel at how a man with so many gifts lacks the one he so desperately needs, the knack of politics.
He has an almost supernatural ability to annoy his own and make tactical errors at critical times. When he was elected leader some of his staunchest critics predicted the Turnbull experiment would be a short and unhappy exercise and, about now, they look to be right.
Now a leadership spill has been called for 1:00pm AEDT and anything could happen.

No leadership spill happened. All is sweet and sour for Malcolm... see toon everywhere.
