A new opinion in the United States gives the Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama a 6 per cent lead over his Republican rival John McCain. 

The poll shows 49 per cent support Senator Obama compared with 43 per cent for Senator McCain. 

Pollster John Zogby says that with just over three weeks before the election, the Obama lead is now statistically significant. 

He says support has been trending up for the Democrats, with Senator Obama gaining traction among independent voters who now back him by a 21-point margin. 

The poll shows the Illinois Senator has a 12 per cent lead among women voters, while he and Senator McCain are equal on 45 per cent among males.

A war of words with racial undertones has reverberated through the White House race after civil rights icon John Lewis accused Republican John McCain of sowing 'hatred' against Barack Obama. 

Senator McCain, who has been trying to tamp down abuse of the Democratic nominee at his campaign events, reacted furiously, lashing out against Congressman Lewis, who only a few weeks ago he described as one of the Americans he most admired.

The probe was the latest blow to Ms Palin, who electrified the Republican Party when she was first picked, but has seen her impact, especially among undecided voters and women diminish amid questions about her qualifications. 

Senator Obama, campaigning earlier in Philadelphia, acknowledged Senator McCain's attempt to cool things down, but charged his rival with running a negative campaign to try to distract voters from the number one issue - the tumbling US economy.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain has become embroiled in a war of words with racial undertones after clashing with a civil rights icon.

John Lewis accused Mr McCain's campaign of "sowing hatred" against opponent Barack Obama and said he was reminded of 1960s segregationist George Wallace.

Mr McCain, who recently said Mr Lewis was one of his most admired Americans, called the reference "beyond the pale".

Mr McCain has also tried to cool his supporters' resentment of Mr Obama.

In Minnesota on Friday, Mr McCain defended Mr Obama after some at the town hall meeting labelled him a "terrorist", "an Arab", a "traitor" and a candidate who inspired fear.

McCain out to 'whip Obama's you know what'

Republican White House hopeful John McCain has vowed to "whip" Barack Obama's "you know what" in this week's final presidential debate, defying doom-laden assessments of his campaign.

Senator McCain gave a pep talk to campaign workers in Washington's Virginia suburbs, as he plotted a comeback in the presidential race against Democrat Senator Obama.

With just over three weeks from the election on November 4, the Arizona senator said he and vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin were criss-crossing battleground states and would intensify their effort after the debate in New York state on Wednesday (US time).

"We're spending a lot of time and after I whip his you know what in this debate we're going to be going out 24/7," Senator McCain said.

Russian rejection...

Russians reject McCain cash plea

The Russian mission to the UN in New York says it has turned down a request from John McCain to help fund his presidential campaign.

Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin and others received standard mail-outs asking them to help "stop the Democrats from seizing control of Washington".

Spokesmen for the McCain campaign and the mission accepted the letters were "a computer error".
