US President George Bush stepped up his war of words with Iran today, calling Tehran the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism in the keynote speech of his tour of the Middle East and the Gulf.

"Iran is today the world's leading state sponsor of terror." Bush said in the speech in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi.

"Iran's actions threaten the security of nations everywhere," the US president said.

"It sends hundreds of millions of dollars to extremists around the world," while keeping its people in poverty at home.

"It seeks to intimidate its neighbours with missiles and bellicose rhetoric."

Bush talks the talk on free speech. Now he must walk the walk

President George Bush is under pressure from human rights groups to use his visit to Saudi Arabia today to seek the release of the pioneering blogger Fouad al-Farhan, who has been jailed without charge for more than a month.

The human rights groups, including Amnesty International and the Committee to Protect Journalists, are urging the president to raise Mr Farhan's case with King Abdullah today. They also want him to appeal for the release of an Egyptian blogger, Abdel Karim Suleiman, the first to be jailed in Egypt, when he meets President Hosni Mubarak at Sharm-el-She-ikh on Wednesday. The Egyptian blogger is serving a four-year sentence for insulting President Mubarak.

Gus: Insult? Here on this site we do not insult anyone... we merely provide the small mirror in which the tall (and short) men (persons) of this world can see their truer selves — full of the jackboots, of the hubris, the tinpot hats, the ratbaggery, the bigotry, the greed and the inflated failability that drive their truer selves ... Not that they'd pay attention to the vanitous reflections from this tiny shard of silvered glass, but at least the mirror convexity cuts them down to a micronic size we, the fodder for their folly (and of our own), can holistically see — flipped for what they are...

Chimpicasso...

A pack of apes let loose in the portrait gallery

You can tire of hearing how much DNA we share with chimps, especially when it's plain that our best genes, evolutionarily speaking, are those we kept to ourselves. An obvious example is the gene for opposable thumbs (instead of toes, which stop you walking fully erectus, so to speak). Or for prioritising brains over brawn (many argue this gene is being selected out in NSW).

You can read how the paintings - or "apestracts" - by the late chimp, Congo, outsold both Warhol and Renoir in a London show. And how the forthcoming autobiography by Tarzan's old chimp, Cheeta - said to be "funny, moving and searingly honest"- fetched a sum that, while undisclosed, is "not bananas".

Gus: what hope is there for me if gifted monkeys get on the art scene? There was the elephants too, painting with their tails on canvases the size of their butts... Jeez, it's already tough enough without the chimps... And my efforts are fetching nothing much... not even green bananas...

Good on these old chimpicasso-es, but I'm sure their minders are the clever swindling monkeys cashing in the cheques — and the artist-apes are getting bugger all apart from bananas and a few old tyres for swinging entertainment...
