closer together, whether the west likes it or not....

Russia’s foreign policy rightly assumes that history is on its side. The country’s aspirations align with the strategic intentions of most nations outside the Western bloc – what we call the “world majority.” This perspective is confirmed by the ongoing military and political confrontation between Russia and the West.

Moscow’s friends in the global majority aren’t swallowing NATO’s attempts to turn Russia into a pariah

Our adversaries openly seek the dissolution of Russian statehood in one form or another. Yet these ambitions clash not only with Russia’s resistance but also with the interests of many nations worldwide.

At a recent Valdai Club conference attended primarily by representatives of the global majority, discussions illuminated both the common ground and the differences between Russia and its partners. While partnerships with third powers won’t determine Moscow’s success against the West, these relationships are critical for building a new international order – one less prone to repeating Europe’s current conflicts.

The key question is how these nations, many dependent on the West economically or militarily, will act. Their likely choices will influence how much effort Russia needs to achieve its core foreign policy goals.

The divide in perspectives

Russia and the global majority often view the world through different lenses. Russian experts, steeped in and aligned with European traditions of political thought, tend to see conflict as the primary driver of change. This is natural for Russia, but it contrasts with the outlook of many nations in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. These countries, shaped by histories of colonialism, reject Western frameworks that emphasize competition and conflict. Instead, their approach to international relations is more fluid, avoiding permanent alliances and ideologically charged clashes.

This divergence stems partly from necessity. Most nations that are friendly to Russia are medium-sized states lacking the resources for complete independence. Their dependence on Western-dominated systems of trade and institutions limits their freedom of action. Breaking away entirely would carry immense economic and political risks. Even for Russia, extricating itself from institutions like the UN or global economic frameworks is not a simple task. For developing nations, the ‘exit price’ could be catastrophic.

Restraint vs revolution

This is why many of these countries are wary of calls to radically revise the global order. They prefer evolution over revolution. Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized this point during his Valdai Club address, stating that Russia has no revolutionary intentions. Ironically, it is the West–desperate to maintain its dominance–that is now dismantling globalization through its own reckless policies.

Russia’s friends in the global majority generally agree that the current military-political conflicts are the result of Western actions. They see these as regional issues that could spiral into global crises if the West escalates them further. Yet, these nations also hope Russia will show restraint, even if it means compromising its interests. Convincing them that such restraint is not always feasible remains a crucial task.

Shared goals, different approaches

Ultimately, the strategic interests of Russia and its partners in the global majority align. Both seek a fairer, multipolar international order without Western coercion. Differences in how these goals are pursued–or in the rhetoric used–should be seen not as obstacles but as opportunities to deepen mutual understanding.

As history unfolds, the shared aspirations for a just world order will bind Russia and the global majority closer together, whether the West likes it or not.

Death toll rises in Nigerian charity event stampedes

In both incidents, the victims were primarily women and children, who had queued for food handouts for hours.

The number of people who died in stampedes at two charity events in Nigeria has increased from 13 to 32, police said on Sunday.

At least 22 people were killed when they rushed to collect donations, including rice and vegetable oil and money, at an event in the southeastern Anambra state's Okija town on Saturday.

Another ten people, including four children, were crushed to death at a church-organized event in the capital, Abuja, where free food was being distributed.

Police said they were investigating the two incidents, which came days after another stampede killed 35 children at a school fair in the southwestern city of Ibadan.

President Bola urges stricter control measures

The stampedes prompted President Bola Tinubu to call for authorities to enforce strict safety measures at such events.

Africa's most populous country sees more groups and churches organizing charity events to help those struggling with the rising cost of living.

Maazo Ezekiel, a spokesman for Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), told AFP the stampedes showed "precautionary measures are not being taken before the distribution of these items."

Nigerian police warned organizers to notify authorities before holding such events.

Cost-of-living crisis

Economic hardship in Nigeria has worsened since President Tinubu began austerity reforms, including devaluing the country's naira currency and ending subsidies for electricity and fuel.

Inflation soared to 34.6% in November from 33.88% in October, marking a third consecutive monthly rise.

In November a joint report by Nigeria's government and the United Nations found more than 30 million people are expected to be food insecure next year.

"Never before have there been so many people in Nigeria without food," Chi Lael, World Food Programme spokesperson for the country said.

The big lie behind Biden’s presidency is a threat and insult to the world. Trump may not be the remedy

The Democrats chose to mislead the public – and in doing so, undermined trust in Washington at home and abroad

By Nadezhda Romanenko

With Donald Trump set to return to the White House in just a month, the full scale of the deception surrounding Joe Biden’s presidency is finally coming to light. The Wall Street Journal’s recent exposé on Biden’s declining health – and the calculated efforts of his team to cover it up – reveals a reality that world leaders and the American public had long suspected but were discouraged from acknowledging.

For the past year, Washington’s top officials maintained the fiction that Biden was fully capable of leading the nation, even as evidence to the contrary mounted. Behind the scenes, his schedule was tightly controlled, his public appearances carefully choreographed, and his engagements with world leaders reduced to brief, highly scripted moments. The result? An administration running on autopilot while projecting an image of stability that no longer existed.

The consequences of this deceit extend far beyond US borders. As Trump prepares to take office, his administration will inherit not just a divided nation but a world that has grown increasingly wary of America’s reliability.

The global implications of America’s deception

The world’s leading powers are observant. Governments in Moscow, Beijing, and beyond are well aware of the dynamics at play. Attempts to manage perceptions of Biden’s health signal potential instability, something no serious nation overlooks. In times of delicate diplomacy and heightened global competition, perception matters as much as action.

Can Biden effectively engage in meaningful dialogue with President Xi Jinping if his advisors fear unscripted conversations? Can he manage complex negotiations with President Vladimir Putin when his team doubts his stamina for sustained talks? These are not rhetorical questions but pressing concerns for those charting the course of international affairs.

For global powers seeking balanced and constructive engagement with the United States, the uncertainty surrounding Biden’s leadership complicates diplomatic initiatives. Without clarity from Washington, even the best-intentioned efforts toward cooperation risk faltering. The image of the US as a steady, reliable partner is essential not just for America but for the stability of global relations.

Trump’s return represents, for many, a course correction – but the damage to US credibility will not be easily undone. Washington’s reliability has been thrown into question not because of policy missteps, but because the highest levels of the US government were complicit in perpetuating a dangerous lie.

A Democratic Party in disarray

The most glaring issue isn’t Biden’s health itself – age and decline are part of life. The real scandal lies in how Democratic leadership chose to manage the situation. Faced with clear evidence that Biden was no longer capable of fully executing the duties of his office, the party’s inner circle opted to suppress and mislead rather than confront the truth.

It’s a damning reflection of the state of American politics. Those closest to Biden placed their own political survival above the nation’s well-being, calculating that holding onto power was worth the cost of undermining public trust. But as Trump’s return looms, the reckoning for this deception is already underway.

Is Trump’s return the solution?

For Trump’s supporters, his victory signals a rejection of the secrecy and dysfunction that defined the latter half of Biden’s presidency. Trump’s blunt, unpredictable style may lack polish, but it offers something Biden’s administration increasingly could not – visibility.

Yet Trump’s return also highlights the fragility of the system itself. Biden’s cover-up wasn’t the work of one man, but an entire apparatus of aides, media allies, and party loyalists who enabled the deception. Trump may bring transparency, but the same political machinery that propped up Biden still exists.

The task ahead for Trump isn’t just reversing Biden’s policies – it’s restoring faith in the presidency as an institution. Without systemic reform, the next crisis could look strikingly similar, regardless of who occupies the Oval Office.

The road ahead

As Biden exits the stage, the Democratic Party must confront its failure head-on. There are no easy answers, but accountability is a necessary first step. Acknowledging the scale of the deception, addressing the culture of secrecy, and ensuring that future leaders are not shielded in the same way is critical to preventing a repeat of this debacle.

For Trump, the challenge is to prove that his return marks not just a personal victory, but a turning point for American governance. His incoming administration will need to navigate a world that has grown accustomed to questioning Washington’s competence and sincerity.

The international community will remain cautious. Rebuilding trust will require more than strong rhetoric – it demands consistency, stability, and a commitment to truth, even when inconvenient.

The Biden presidency may be ending, but the scars left by the deceit surrounding it will shape the global order for years to come. Trump’s victory signals a shift, but whether it can heal the fractures left behind remains to be seen.
