Larry C. Johnson: Ukraine's Offensive Failing? Russia Makes Major Gains! - Israel in Grave Troubles

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYaKGnVFXT8

--------------------

Kiev’s president Zelensky tried to calm down his Western patrons claiming that everything is going according to plan in the Kursk region, but the pincer of Russian counteroffensive is shrinking the Ukrainian grouping on Russian territory.

Over the past days alone, Russian forces took back control of several more settlements on different flanks. As a result of successful attacks, the weak Ukrainian defense was destroyed in the Korenevo district of the region. On September 16, the Russian Ministry of Defense officially confirmed the full control of the border village of Uspenovka. Russian forces launched an assault on Lyubimovka and took control of Daryino located on the eastern flank of the Snagost river.

At the same time, Russian counterattacks brought victories on the eastern flank of the Kursk battlefield. The Russian military officially confirmed control of Borki.

Ukrainian attacks in other directions around Sudzha are repelled and bring more losses to the Ukrainian army.

As a result of the Russian advance along the border around the main Ukrainian stronghold in Sudzha, the Ukrainian military only has one large road left for communications and military supplies on Russian territory. It lays between Sudzha and the Ukrainian Sumy region and it is already under Russian fire control.

The plan of the great military genius Zelensky was probably to launch attacks in the rear of the advancing Russian troops in the Kursk region; but there were hitches in his plan.

In recent days, the Armed Forces of Ukraine attempted several attacks in the border areas near Veseloe in the Glushkovsky district. Ukrainian forces crossed the border in an attempt to gain a foothold at the local railway station in the Russian rear but they were welcomed by Russian forces and stopped by heavy battles.

The Russian military was well aware of the plans of the Ukrainian military command after a series of precision strikes with NATO systems on Russian bridges across the Seim River, which began a month ago. Weeks of delays of Ukrainian ground attacks across the border in the Glushkovsky district offered the Russian military a lot of time to strengthen its defense.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine lost several experienced units in more than a month of heavy battles in the Kursk region. Amid heavy losses, the Ukrainian command began throwing untrained soldiers recently captured on the streets into a slaughter. Today, losing large reserves near Sudzha, Ukrainian troops are forced to regroup and attempt new assaults in other directions in the Kursk region.

Zelensky likely hopes to capture quite wide areas and push the Russian army across the Seim River to declare another senseless great victory and gain political benefit; but he needs much more cannon fodder to cover Russian land with blood.

The ban imposed on RT by US tech giant Meta is further proof that Washington and its allies will stop at nothing to silence independent media voices, Leonidas Chrysanthopoulos, a former Greek ambassador to Armenia and Poland, said on Tuesday.
The measures taken by Western governments and tech companies already resemble those made by the “extreme right” in the past, the diplomat warned in an interview with RT.

“We should not be surprised in Western Europe if we actually reach the stage of closing down independent media… as was happening during the Greek dictatorship or in the Nazi Germany,” added Chrysanthopoulos, who has also represented his nation at the UN General Assembly.

According to the former diplomat, what has happened to RT could be just the beginning, as some Greek media, including the “148-year-old newspaper Estia,” also face pressure from the authorities.

...

Chrysanthopoulos further claimed that Meta is using a “strategy” of lies to justify its targeting of RT. The US tech giant decided to outright ban the broadcaster this week, without the need to prove its position in court or present any evidence supporting its accusations against the outlet, the former ambassador said.

“Since they have taken the decision not to go to court, they can start saying any kind of lies to put down RT,” Chrysanthopoulos stated. “What they are saying is absolutely false.”

Such actions only show that “freedom of speech globally that is being threatened, particularly by the US,”he argued.

Routh pointed an assault rifle at Donald Trump on his Florida golf course on September 15, in what became the second assassination attempt on the 45th US president since July.

It seems the Kiev regime is desperately trying to brush off Ukraine’s links to purported would-be Trump shooter Ryan Wesley Routh, following his claims (on X and in interviews) about his involvement in the Ukraine conflict.

First and foremost, Volodymyr Zelensky was quick to condemn the assassination attempt, claiming that he’s "glad to hear" that Trump is "safe and unharmed."

Zelensky then went further by extending his "best wishes" to the 45th US president and his family and adding that "It’s good that the suspect was apprehended quickly."

In the same vein, the International Legion of Ukraine, a unit with the Ukrainian Ground Forces, argued that it had no association with Routh.

"American citizen Ryan Routh has never served in the International Legion and has no relation to the unit. Rumors disseminated in certain media are not true," the unit said in a statement.

The Guardian has meanwhile cited the legion as saying that Routh's ideas about what he once called "a black and white" Ukraine conflict were "delusional*."

The same tone was struck by Matthew Crosston, Professor of National Security and Director of Academic Transformation at Bowie State University who told Sputnik that "the early information coming out about the [suspected Trump] shooter clearly indicates a man of questionable mental stability that has over the years often resulted in radical extreme expressions of delusional political action." Crosston minced no words when dubbing Routh "an unhealthy and unstable person."

In last year’s interview with the New York Times, Routh claimed he was willing "to fight and die in Ukraine," and in separate development, he told Newsweek that he’s eager to recruit volunteers for Ukraine’s Foreign Legion.

some news...

IT WOULDN’T HURT THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA, INCLUDING THE ABC (AUSTRALIA) TO EXPRESS ALTERNATIVE POINTS OF VIEWS WHICH PRESENTLY ARE PLACED IN THE DISINFORMATION FOLDER.

It has to be said that the official information from the American Empire is mostly cleverly manipulated DISINFORMATION

We know for example that the war on SADDAM was a set up — a war based on deliberate falsehoods MANUFACTURED by the regime of George W Bush. PRESENTLY, the conflict in Ukraine has been polished by the American Empire as an UNPROVOKED aggression by Russia when we know this is untrue. The American PROVOCATIONS, including the lies of NATO (formed after WW2), against RUSSIA go back at least as far as 1917.

the other PRESENT major conflict, that in the Middle-East between the Palestinians and ISRAEL, did not start on October 7th, 2023 as claimed by many legacy media, but has its modern origins in the creation of the state of ISRAHELL and, prior to this, in the Renaissance’s wars of religions. Thus other points of views, expressing the complex nature of HISTORY need to defeat the official narrative of the EMPIRE. These points of views are available by listening to other journalists and EXPERTS such as:

Escobar's concept of "Pipelineistan" refers to the network of oil and gas pipelines in crucial geopolitical regions, especially Central Asia. He suggests that Western actions in these areas are largely driven by a desire to reduce dependence on Russian energy and OPEC. This theory has faced criticism, particularly regarding its application to conflicts like the Syrian Civil War. Escobar's REALITY work has been scrutinized for its appearance in outlets identified by the U.S. State Department as part of Russia's disinformation network, such as RT and Sputnik News, raising questions about the potential propagation of Russian INFORMATION.

In accordance with his theory, Mearsheimer believes that China's growing power will likely bring it into conflict with the United States.

In his 2007 book The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy, Mearsheimer argues that the Israel lobby wields disproportionate influence over U.S. foreign policy. ROGER WATERS (PINK FLOYD): George Roger Waters (born 6 September 1943) is an English musician and singer-songwriter. In 1965, he co-founded the rock band Pink Floyd as the bassist. Following the departure of the songwriter, Syd Barrett, in 1968, Waters became Pink Floyd's lyricist, co-lead vocalist and conceptual leader until his departure in 1985.

Pink Floyd achieved international success with the concept albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979), and The Final Cut (1983). By the early 1980s, they had become one of the most acclaimed and commercially successful groups in popular music. Amid creative differences, Waters left in 1985 and began a legal dispute over the use of the band's name and material. They settled out of court in 1987. Waters's solo work includes the studio albums The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking (1984), Radio K.A.O.S. (1987), Amused to Death (1992), and Is This the Life We Really Want? (2017). In 2005, he released Ça Ira, an opera translated from Étienne and Nadine Roda-Gils' libretto about the French Revolution.

Waters incorporates political themes in his work and is a prominent supporter of Palestine in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. He has called for the removal of the Israeli West Bank Barrier, supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel, and describes Israel's treatment of Palestinians as apartheid. Some of his comments, such as his likening of Israel to Nazi Germany, and elements of his live shows, drew accusations of antisemitism, which Waters dismissed as a conflation of anti-Semitism with anti-Zionism.

MONTHLY REVIEW began publication in New York City in May 1949. The first issue featured the lead article “Why Socialism?” by Albert Einstein. From the beginning, Monthly Review spoke for a critical but spirited socialism, independent of any political organization. In an era of Cold War repression, the magazine published pioneering analyses of political economy, imperialism, and Third World struggles, drawing on the rich legacy of Marxist thought without being bound to any narrow view or party line. The McCarthy-led inquisition targeted MR‘s original editors, Paul Sweezy and Leo Huberman, who fought back successfully. Against these odds, the magazine’s readership and influence grew steadily, and in 1952, Monthly Review Press published its first title, I. F. Stone’s Hidden History of the Korean War.

In the subsequent 1960s upsurge against capitalism, imperialism, and inequality, MR played a global role. A generation of activists received no small part of their education as subscribers to the magazine and readers of Monthly Review Press books. In the decades since, with the rise of neoliberalism and successive capitalist crises, MR has kept its commitment both to radical critique and to the building of a just economy and society.

For a more detailed look at MR‘s history, interested readers may consult this essay, published in 1999 for the magazine’s fiftieth anniversary.

In its nearly seventy-year history, MR has had only six editors. The original editors were economist Paul M. Sweezy and journalist and historian Leo Huberman. After Huberman’s death in 1968, Harry Magdoff joined Sweezy as coeditor, and together they led the magazine for the next three decades. Ellen Meiksins Wood served as editor from 1997 to 2000, when John Bellamy Foster and Robert W. McChesney took over primary editorial duties. Founding editor Paul M. Sweezy died in 2004, and Harry Magdoff in 2006.

TODAY — Under the current editorial committee, led by John Bellamy Foster, the magazine continues its long tradition of analyzing what is new together with the equally vital task of seeing the longer process. That tradition, as summarized by Paul Sweezy, is to see “the present as history.” In 2006, MR began a daily web magazine, MRzine, which in 2017 was migrated to a new project, MR Online, a forum for collaboration and communication between radical activists, writers, and scholars around the world.

Revenues from subscriptions and book sales have always fallen short of the demands on MR‘s resources. The contributions and gifts of a global community of several thousand people sustain MR. Today the magazine makes all new articles available for free online, and MR Online attracts a substantial and growing readership. If you have found our website of value, please consider subscribing to the magazine or, better yet, becoming an Associate.

DAVE DE CAMP: ANTIWAR.COM. Randolph Bourne, a notable American journalist, social critic, and political activist of the early 20th century, courageously opposed U.S. intervention in World War I. Read Jeff Riggenbach's biography of Bourne.

The Randolph Bourne Institute (RBI) seeks to honor Bourne's memory by promoting a noninterventionist foreign policy for the United States as the best way of fostering a peaceful, more prosperous world.

A nonprofit, tax-exempt, educational organization founded in 2001, the RBI centers its efforts around four major projects: a Web site, Antiwar.com; a fellows program for writers and researchers; a speakers program; and a student intern and campus outreach program. Every RBI project is designed for maximum inclusiveness, in the hope of enabling people from all points on the political spectrum – libertarian, left, right, and center – to join together on the vital issue of opposing war.

The Antiwar.com Web site, launched in December 1995, is the Institute's main project and the preeminent noninterventionist site on the Internet. It provides hourly coverage of breaking news, along with informed analysis of major world conflicts (with particular attention to the U.S. role in those conflicts) – something the establishment media utterly fails to offer. Toward this end, Antiwar.com relies on existing news sources as well as on its own columnists and reporters, many of whom file from within the various conflict areas covered on the site. Antiwar.com's target audience includes members of the media, college students, and other concerned individuals and organizations. Antiwar.com has been a project of the RBI for twenty-three years and has grown steadily in that time, as has its following – whether measured by numbers of readers or by the site's demonstrated ability to affect the type and tenor of public debate about noninterventionism. Antiwar.com's growing influence has been analyzed and discussed on such national TV news programs as the PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, in such magazines as Mother Jones, The Atlantic, The Nation, and in such popular alternative weeklies as the New York Press and the SF (San Francisco) Bay Guardian.

The RBI fellows program provides support for authors and researchers interested in the topic of nonintervention. Currently, the RBI boasts two particularly distinguished fellows. The editorial director of Antiwar.com, Justin Raimondo, is also a senior fellow of the Randolph Bourne Institute. Raimondo's writings include Reclaiming the American Right: The Lost Legacy of the Conservative Movement (1993, reprinted 2008); Into the Bosnian Quagmire: The Case Against U.S. Intervention in the Balkans (1996); An Enemy of the State: The Life of Murray N. Rothbard (2000); The Terror Enigma: 9/11 and the Israeli Connection (2003); and numerous articles for newspapers and magazines, including the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, The American Conservative, and Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture. Another RBI senior fellow is prominent journalist Jeff Riggenbach, author of In Praise of Decadence (1998), Why American History Is Not What They Say: An Introduction to Revisionism (2009), and hundreds of articles in publications as diverse as USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the San Francisco Chronicle, Reason, and Inquiry.

The RBI speakers program has arranged for our fellows, our columnists, our staff members, and others to make informative and insightful presentations, primarily on U.S. interventionism, on college campuses and in other venues. We are actively seeking to expand in this area and to schedule more events in the future. If our readers have suggestions, we welcome them.

A student intern/campus outreach program was initiated in the summer of 2002, when the RBI's first two student interns worked on setting up the RBI campus outreach program and fielding assignments related to Antiwar.com, the RBI library project, and a series of face-to-face meetings between students and local experts on U.S. foreign policy (e.g., Hoover Institution scholars and Stanford and UC Berkeley students). We hope to expand the intern program to year-round in the near future.

Information and disinformation

If the two-minute interview I had with Iran’s Press TV at noon Central European Time today is re-posted on the internet then, you will be able to hear my hearty approval of Scott Ritter’s one-paragraph comments on the latest developments in the United States’ war on RT which he has just disseminated.

Washington’s efforts to destroy RT’s ability to distribute its programs in the United States have been of long duration. What is changing now that makes this newsworthy is the decision by Mark Zuckerberg, the substantial owner and director of Meta, CEO of its Facebook and other platforms counting many millions of subscribers, to ban RT and several other Russian news purveyors from Meta’s global network.

Scott Ritter rightly denounced this U.S. government-inspired attack on RT as a war not on the Russian broadcaster but on the American people, whom it seeks to deprive of the right to decide for itself whom it watches, whom it listens to without U.S. government interference.  The intent of the latest decision by Meta, which bends to the policy dictated to it by Capitol Hill, is to cancel our freedoms. I said and repeat here: bravo to Scott Ritter for an eloquent and pithy statement.

So much for the ‘information’ aspect of this brief note.  Now let us move to ‘disinformation’ by the very same Scott Ritter within the past 24 hours:  namely what he is saying on ‘Judging Freedom’ and other authoritative internet channels about how we all narrowly escaped death this past weekend, because “back channel” communications from top Russian intelligence officials to their counterparts in Washington delivered a threatening and substantive message that scared the receiving party down its socks and led them to impose on Biden and Blinken to end all talk of allowing Kiev to send US and NATO long range missiles into the heartland of Russia.

I call this ‘disinformation’ because apart from Ritter, I have not seen or heard any credible accounts in major media, Russian as well as Western, even hinting that such a backchannel exists and was used. The last time we heard about a stern message being delivered by the Kremlin to Washington was several months ago when Russian Defense Minister Belousov picked up a telephone and called his American counterpart Secretary of Defense Austin to persuade the Americans to back down on the latest threat they were then making to Russian security.  Note that the intelligence services were never mentioned in that connection.  Nor does it make much sense now, given that the subject at hand – use of ATACMS and Storm Shadow missiles – would fall within the competence of the Pentagon, not the CIA, whose specialty is political assassinations and regime change.

However, the issue of who made and who received the phone call this time is not the main point in my objection. Rather, what I find incredible is the very notion that Putin, through his subordinates, would, as Scott Ritter is saying, read off a list of targets for immediate destruction by Russian hypersonic missiles like the Mach-20 Avangard and that this demonstration of advanced preparation for the Doomsday scenario and readiness to execute it would shake the Americans down to their socks.

Vladimir Putin is not given to drastic shifts in tone and intent such as Ritter is describing.  And there is absolutely no reason for him to risk everything on one throw of the dice, to risk a U.S. preemptive strike at once now that the scenario against them had been so neatly laid out.

First of all, even if permission were given by Washington for the British to send their Storm Shadows on their way to the Russian heartland under the flimsy cover of Ukrainian fingers on the button, where are the jets to carry those missiles aloft and fire them towards Russia from somewhere very close to the line of confrontation?  And if jets were taking off from Moldova or Romania for this purpose, the Russians could with full legal justification attack those same jets on the ground at the airports that harbor them whether in NATO or not – doing all of this without triggering any WWIII.

Of course, this problem of a launch vehicle does not relate to ATACMS, which is a ground-to-ground missile. But the talks of British PM Starmer with Biden were said to be limited only to the British missiles, since Biden & Co. had in advance emphatically ruled out use of American missiles so as not to come between the Russian cross-hairs.

Still more, knowing Putin’s behavior in the past at moments of crisis in the relationship with the United States, I believe his first instinct would be to address the American people directly about his intentions and the reasons for them, rather than to confine the discussion to ‘back channels’ with the likes of Burns or Sullivan.

Ritter speaks about the decision in Washington to suspend any decision on long-range missiles as a big humiliation for Joe Biden and says this explains the President’s outburst in answer to a reporter’s question, saying that he does not think at all about Vladimir Putin. I have not seen any word in mainstream U.S. media suggesting that there was a humiliating climbdown. When Biden’s mental state is widely considered in the U.S. as a national humiliation, there is not much to say about any given decision by this senile creature.

I have in the past several days freely admitted that my ‘end is nigh’ remarks with respect to the risks of giving unrestricted rights to Kiev on the missiles, were exaggerated. But then I was measuring the countdown to Doomsday in weeks, in the worst scenario, not in hours or minutes as Scott Ritter has done.

We are not out of the woods yet, to be sure.  And the task before all ‘warriors for peace’ is not to celebrate our surviving this past weekend but to continue to spread the word in the broadest possible public arenas that our governments are pursuing utterly ignorant and reckless policies.  We need more street demonstrations and fewer popping of corks.

Glenn Greenwald:

Two weeks ago, I wrote to you to inform you of several changes we had adopted with the primary purpose of creating more time for me to publish more written journalism and analysis, of the kind you have come to expect from my work at the Intercept and then at Substack. Launching our live nightly SYSTEM UPDATE program on Rumble has been very gratifying and a great success in terms of our ability to quickly build a large audience, but it left me with little time to work on the written journalism that I have always considered, and still do consider, to be the anchor of my work.

Those changes have indeed resulted in my having more time to write. We are happy to notify today of a new article we just published on a news story I regard as extremely important. Brazil, under its new government led President Lula da Silva, is poised to become the first nation in the democratic world to implement a law empowering the government to ban "fake news and disinformation," and to punish those it claims are guilty of authoring and disseminating such "false" ideas.

As we report, the implications for this law are serious and extend far beyond Brazil. Brazil is being used as a test case by both the EU and various sectors in the U.S. to see how far states can go in seizing new powers to censors the internet in the name of stopping what the state decrees is "fake news and disinformation."

The article is published here on our Locals platform. As was true for almost every article I wrote at Substack, it is free and publicly available to subscribers and non–subscribers alike. Your subscriptions is what enables us to make our journalism available to the widest possible audience, without having to hide it behind a paywall. There are exclusive benefits for Locals subscribers – including access to our twice-a-week interactive after-show, transcripts of each episode of our program in article form, and other community-based content – but we intend for my news articles and analysis to continue to be freely available to ensure the widest possible distribution and impact.

You can read the new article at this link.

Caitlin Johnstone:

Israel just turned thousands of Lebanese people into involuntary suicide bombers in the name of fighting terrorism.

At least nine people have been killed and thousands injured in an attack in Lebanon which reportedly involved pagers packed with explosives being remotely detonated around the country, often in civilian areas. An eight year-old girl is reportedly among the dead.

According to The New York Times, unnamed officials from the US and elsewhere are saying that Israel planted the explosive materials in the pagers before they reached Lebanon after Hezbollah ordered them from a Taiwanese manufacturer.

The US is denying any foreknowledge of the attack, but that’s what they always do. We’re always asked to believe that the US never knew anything about attacks conducted by nations like Israel and Ukraine until they read about it in the news, and that their massive intelligence cartel and sprawling surveillance networks never pick up any information and exist for no reason.

...

The unprecedented nature and scale of this attack has raised a lot of concerns from a lot of directions. We all use electronic devices in our daily lives, and weaponizing them at mass scale is naturally going to scare people.

“If it were iPhones that were leaving the factory with explosives inside, the media would be a hell of a lot faster to cotton on to what a horrific precedent has been set today. Nothing can justify this. It’s a crime. A crime. And everyone in the world is less safe for it,” tweeted NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

“What Israel has just done is, via *any* method, reckless. They blew up countless numbers of people who were driving (meaning cars out of control), shopping (your children are in the stroller standing behind him in the checkout line), et cetera. Indistinguishable from terrorism,” Snowden also said.

What strikes me watching all this is how gratuitously creepy it is. Israel is so creepy. Everyone already sees them as rapey genocidal baby killers, and then they have to go and commit this weird terror attack in the creepiest way possible and freak everyone out, to no clear and meaningful strategic gain. They’re so creepy they can’t stop themselves from always choosing the creepiest course of action.

Muammar Gaddafi led his nation to become the wealthiest in all of Africa. A decade after his demise, it is riven by tribalism, terrorism and slavery, all because the West could not allow an Arab leader to succeed.

There was never really an ‘Arab Spring’ in Libya the way there was in Egypt or Tunisia. Protests were much smaller, and as time went on to show, the biggest players turned out to be extremist groups and foreign actors, each trying to get a slice of the country.

NATO’s bombing of Libya and support for rebels seeking to overthrow Gaddafi had little to do with wanting the country to prosper. Under the guise of ‘human rights’ and ‘democracy’, the Western military alliance helped murder one of the Arab world’s most prominent leaders in order to steal Libya’s resources and protect Western hegemony. Later on, as part of Operation Timber Sycamore, the CIA would find additional utility in Gaddafi’s ousting: funnelling Libya’s stockpiles of weapons and ammunition over to Syria to arm Al-Qaeda and other jihadist groups.

Seldom discussed in the news anymore, Libya has become a shadow of its former self, ravaged by 10 years of war and chaos. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and the other war criminals who orchestrated its destruction don’t want you to know how badly it’s doing.

From thriving nation to ‘failed state’

Known for his extravagance, Gaddafi boasted a security detail of female bodyguards, lavish outfits, and long, dramatic speeches. He also transformed Libya from one of the poorest countries on Earth into a rich, self-sufficient state, all while managing a tribal society in a country home to the largest oil reserves in Africa.

During his 42 years in power, he increased the country’s literacy rate from 25% to 88%. Libyans enjoyed free healthcare, free education, and a high standard of living. Basic necessities such as electricity and gas were cheap, and the country was guaranteed a strong social safety net and welfare programs.

Libya is 90% desert. Gaddafi sought to provide fresh water to all Libyans for consumption and agriculture – an endeavor in which he succeeded. He built the world’s largest irrigation project, the ‘Great Man-Made River’ in the 1980s. Boasting the world’s largest pipe network, it provides 70% of all the fresh water in Libya. Gaddafi called it the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. Costing over $25 billion, the project was entirely self-financed, without any loans or credits from foreign banks. Libya had grown to be a very wealthy country and had no external debt.

NATO bombed the Great Man-Made River in July 2011, destroying key civilian infrastructure: a war crime.

The United Nations’ Human Development Index provides a summary measure of health, education and income. In 2010, Libya was ranked number one in Africa, and 53rd out of 189 countries and territories. Today, its ranking has sunk from 53rd to 105th worldwide.

After the NATO-backed ‘revolution’, Libya has none of these nice things anymore. There are constant power cuts. The healthcare system has collapsed. There is no infrastructure. The standard of living has plummeted, and after 10 years, Libya doesn’t even have a functioning central government.

In March this year, a government of national unity was formed, after a ceasefire brokered in October 2020. While it has largely held until now, and elections are scheduled for December, infighting persists, and whether anything comes of this process remains to be seen.

Instead of an abundance of water, gold and oil in a thriving country with great infrastructure, Libya now has open slave-trade markets. Smugglers and human traffickers take advantage of migrants and refugees passing through to Europe, selling them off into bondage. Rival tribes and political factions fight over oil and other precious resources, determined to seize power for themselves. Meanwhile, pockets of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), Al-Qaeda and other jihadist fighters lurk in the shadows, plaguing the war-torn country and its neighbors – groups who wouldn’t have dared establish a presence in Gaddafi’s Libya.

Once a prosperous nation, since his fall, it has been taken over by terrorists, opportunists and thieves, and has plunged into chaos. This is what has become of Libya these last 10 years. This is what NATO created.

One of Gaddafi’s best speeches was in 2008 in Damascus, at a meeting of the Arab League. Rebuking the violent invasion of Iraq, he offered Arab leaders a stark reminder of what befell Saddam Hussein, whom the US once considered an ally against Iran.

“An entire Arab leadership was executed by hanging, yet we sit on the sidelines. Why? Any one of you might be next.”

Chuckling at his words, other Arab leaders would have done well to take heed of Gaddafi’s warning, for, indeed, the US would come for Syria and Libya next. And just three years later, Gaddafi himself would be brutally killed at the hands of NATO-backed rebels.

Anti-imperialist, pan-Arabist and pan-African: Why Gaddafi had to fall

The late Libyan leader supported independence and national liberation movements right across the world, including groups such as the Palestine Liberation Organization, the Irish Republican Army, the Black Panther Party, and many more. In the 1970s, he tried to merge Libya with Egypt and Syria to form a unified Arab state. In 2009, he proposed that African nations adopt a single currency: the gold dinar. The Libyan Central Bank, which was 100% state-owned, had reserves of 144 tons of gold that he intended to use for this purpose. Gaddafi proposed that African countries buy and sell their resources exclusively in this new pan-African currency. This would enable them to transition away from the US dollar and the Central Africa (CFA) franc – a colonial currency used in 14 countries and controlled entirely by France.

This was Gaddafi’s biggest sin. In wanting African nations to adopt a single currency, to control their own resources and have true independence, he posed a threat to Western monetary hegemony, so he had to go.

Western governments were well aware of this plan. A look at the emails of then-US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, show discussions around Gaddafi’s gold reserves and his plans for a single currency. It became clear to the West that African countries switching away from the US dollar or CFA franc, and controlling their own currency and monetary policy, would undermine American and French influence over Africa. It would weaken the Western monopoly over African resources and the international banking system, rendering neo-colonial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund less effective in manipulating developing nations.

Not that we needed further confirmation; but written clearly in those emails was evidence that this plan to provide an alternative to the CFA franc “was one of the factors that influenced President Nicolas Sarkozy’s decision to commit France to the attack on Libya.”

Sarkozy decided to bomb Libya because he knew full well that West African and Central African countries abandoning the CFA franc would minimise France’s sphere of influence over its ‘former’ African colonies and fulfil its “desire to gain a greater share of Libya oil production” – that is, plunder Libya’s wealth.

Gaddafi foresaw this in 2011, when he said, “There is a conspiracy to control Libyan oil and to control Libyan land, to colonize Libya once again.”

All this is a stark reminder that NATO couldn’t care less about protestors and the ‘Arab Spring’. Claims of “respect for democracy” were merely a cover story to protect Western interests and steal Libya’s resources, leaving the country in chaos and crawling with terrorists, just like Iraq and Syria.

Nothing could be more emblematic of how evil the entire affair is, than Hillary Clinton literally jumping for joy on hearing of Gaddafi’s demise, after he was brutally sodomized, lynched and executed by NATO-backed rebels. “We came, we saw, he died,” she said.

Killed for his success

Gaddafi was always a thorn in the side of Western colonial interests. His greatest ‘crime’ was wanting real independence, threatening US and French monetary hegemony, and the international banking system.

Now people look at Libya and label it a ‘failed state’, but Gaddafi’s Libya was not a failed state. It was Africa’s wealthiest and most prosperous nation – a thriving, flourishing state until the West deliberately destroyed it in 2011.

Apologists for Western imperialism love dismissing the achievements of other countries and labelling their leaders dictators, but the truth is, Libya was much better off under Gaddafi. It had oil, gold, water and resource independence.

History is littered with African, Arab and Latin leaders, killed by the United States, for daring to make their countries better and seeking to challenge Western hegemony. Gaddafi is no exception.

There is nothing the West hates more than an Arab leader who opposes imperialism, Zionism and wants his country, and other Arab and African countries, to be self-sufficient. That is why NATO murdered Gaddafi.
