NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg is confident Sweden will join the military alliance by July at the latest, he told German news agency DPA this week. 

The next NATO summit will be held in Washington from July 9-11 and the Nordic country will be a fully-fledged member by then, he said. 

Sweden and Finland abandoned decades of neutrality and both applied to become NATO allies in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. While Helsinki's bid was swiftly approved, Stockholm's is being held up by both Turkey and Hungary.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wants the Swedish government to act against Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) members on its soil and is leveraging his veto power to get F-16 fighter jets from the U.S. 

In late December, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said there was no “great willingness” from Hungarian lawmakers to approve Sweden's bid. 

A few days later, the Turkish parliament's foreign affairs committee gave its approval for Sweden to join the alliance after months of stalling. The chamber's general assembly now needs to give its final green light. 

Stockholm has honored its commitments to Ankara and made concessions, Stoltenberg said.

Sweden will join NATO under American command next July. In the meantime, the United States has already entered Sweden. An agreement signed last December grants them unlimited access to 17 Swedish military bases. Nuclear weapons are not mentioned in the agreement, but the United States will have exclusive control of the prepositioned weapons, raising the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons in Sweden as well. 

Last December, the United States reached a similar agreement with Finland, which joined NATO under American command last April. Finland grants the United States unrestricted access to 15 military bases, including the prepositioning of weapons and the entry of American planes, ships and military vehicles. As the United States has sole control of these forces, it can deploy nuclear weapons and launchers on Finnish bases. Five of the 15 bases are located in Lapland, on the Russian border.

At the same time, the United States is deploying new B61-12 nuclear bombs in Europe. They are deployed in Italy, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Turkey to replace the B61 nuclear bombs. It is possible that the B61-12s are also secretly deployed in Poland and other European countries. While their deployment is underway, the Pentagon announces its decision to develop a new variant of the bomb, called B61-13. It will have a power of 360 kilotons, well above the maximum power of 50 kilotons of the B61-12.

The Pentagon states that “The B61-13 will provide the President of the United States with additional options against more difficult military targets and large area targets". In other words, the United States is deploying first-strike nuclear bombs in Europe, clearly aimed at Russia, to destroy command center bunkers and large areas of strategic importance.

Russia's response is inevitable: it has completed the deployment in Belarus of tactical nuclear weapons capable of striking US and NATO nuclear bases in Europe.

At the same time, the risk of nuclear war is growing in the Middle East, where Israel – the region's only nuclear power – is preparing, with US support, to attack Iran.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced recently that 800 Swedish soldiers will be deployed in Latvia next year to reinforce the 2,000 Canada-led troops stationed there as part of the bloc’s Enhanced Forward Presence in the Baltic states.

Speaking on his country’s future role in NATO at the same annual conference last year, Kristersson affirmed that “having nuclear weapons on our own territory in peacetime is in the cards.”

Moscow has repeatedly stated that NATO’s continuing expansion towards Russia’s western borders, as well as the refusal to rule out Ukraine’s membership in the future, are among the key causes of the ongoing conflict. Russia sees NATO as a threat to its national security.

Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov has accused the West of turning Europe into an “arena for confrontation.” The accession of Finland and Sweden will “have a negative impact on the situation in Europe,” he warned.

Moscow has also stated that the deliveries of weapons and money to Kiev makes NATO countries de facto direct participants in the conflict.
