The West is increasingly losing patience with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has claimed. The diplomat cited the subdued welcome that the Ukrainian leader recently received on a visit to Romania.

Speaking at a meeting with Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov and Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, Lavrov argued that “everyone is fed up” with Zelensky, the Russia 1 TV channel reported on Sunday.

According to the broadcaster, the diplomat quoted Romanian Senator Diana Sosoaca, who directed an angry tirade at the Ukrainian president ahead of his visit to Bucharest last week.

Sosoaca called on Romanian President Klaus Iohannis to prevent Zelensky, whom she described as an “arrogant and unconscionable traitor, including to his own country,” from addressing the Romanian parliament. The politician further warned of “bad” consequences should she “catch” the Ukrainian president at the parliament building.

“We are going to war for Zelensky’s grain! March out of our country, godless man! If you think we will sit idly by, you are wrong!” Sosoaca stated.

According to Romanian media, the Ukrainian leader’s planned speech to parliament was canceled during his visit last Tuesday. Speaking at a press conference alongside Johannis, Zelensky insisted that he had never intended to make an address.

The opinion of Kiev in Romania has been adversely affected by the recent inflow of cheap Ukrainian grain into the country, coupled with what some see as discriminatory treatment toward the Romanian ethnic minority in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, speaking on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meetings in Marrakech on Saturday, Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergey Marchenko admitted that Kiev is being forced to make “twice the effort right now to convince our partners to provide us with support compared to the last annual meetings [in spring].”

The official put this trend down to “tiredness” among Ukraine’s backers, who “would like to forget about the war.” The minister also cited the escalation between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and the upcoming presidential election in the US as among the factors drawing attention away from Ukraine.

As the latest escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict shows no signs of abating, the United States may be poised to send its own military into the fray.

The US House Foreign Affairs Committee is now working on legislation that would authorize the use of US military force if Iran or Hezbollah become involved in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the committee’s chair Michael McCaul told the media.

McCaul delivered this revelation as the US has already sent two of its aircraft carrier strike groups to the Eastern Mediterranean, while Israel has implored the United States to provide some $10 billion emergency aid, one American newspaper claims, citing “three officials familiar with the request.”

With all the Western spotlight the Gaza Strip conflict is getting, it has become a serious problem for the Kiev regime boss Volodymyr Zelensky who has got “knocked off the headlines,” says Daniel McAdams, executive director of the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity.

According to him, it is “hard to even find news on what's going on with Russia and Ukraine,” and it is unclear whether the Biden administration will succeed in convincing the Congress to pass a bill that would lump together billions of dollars’ worth of aid for Israel and Ukraine.

“I mean, it's a perfect storm for Zelensky. The members of Congress, at least publicly, are absolutely overwhelming in their support for Israel. That takes precedence over literally every other issue,” McAdams said.

He also suggested that there is “certainly an awakening when it comes to Ukraine,” as it becomes increasingly apparent that the overhyped Ukrainian offensive ended in failure and that all the money and lives the United States “dumped” into the Ukrainian project, all of this has been for naught.

With All Eyes on Israel-Gaza, Ukraine is losing war momentum
There is no amount of aid that will grant Kyiv the military victory it is seeking.

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that the Biden administration was preparing to submit a package to Congress requesting another $100 billion for the ongoing war in Ukraine, the new war in Israel, and a potential future war in the Indo-Pacific. 

Left out of the article was any assessment of what the money for Ukraine would be used for or what attainable objective it would intend to secure.

The reason is pretty clear: the government has no plan and doesn’t know what it wants to achieve.

The U.S. House is in turmoil and has been without a Speaker for more than two weeks now, a situation that was in part brought on because some in the Republican conference were adamantly opposed to providing additional funds in the budget for Ukraine and took it out on Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) by voting to vacate his position as Speaker. 

With so much attention foisted on the political chaos in Washington and the explosive situation in Israel, some might be distracted from conducting the reasonable due diligence necessary to determine whether it makes sense to give more money to Ukraine. That would be a mistake. It doesn’t take much analysis to realize it would be foolish to send more money and weapons without a strategy for ending the war, starting with a diplomatic strategy to match the massive amount of guns, missiles, and tanks we are already sending there.

In October and November of last year the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) were flush with confidence after handing the Russian invaders two major tactical defeats: one in Kherson city and one in the Kharkiv province. The UAF recaptured an astounding 6,000 square kilometers of territory in less than two months. The money that had already been flowing from Washington to Kyiv since the start of the war was huge. It would get bigger.

By December 2022, the U.S. Congress had approved $113 billion in total economic and military aid to Ukraine. In early January, encouraged by Kyiv’s success on the battlefield, the regular 2023 weapons tranches began, including this $3 billion announcement of Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles, self-propelled howitzers, MRAPs and other armed personnel carriers, GMLRS rockets, surface-to-air missiles, anti-vehicle landmines, ammunition, and other items from DOD inventories.

Along with subsequent commitments by other NATO militaries of Challenger 2 tanks, Leopard 2 tanks, light French tanks, and hundreds of other armored vehicles, many Western military experts claimed Ukraine could launch a summer offensive that could drive to the Azov coast, cut the Russian defenders in half, and might cause the collapse of the Russian army. “The Russian military,” crowed Sen. Lindsey Graham, “is about to have holy hell unleashed upon them!” Expectation management might have been a better track.

As it turned out, the Ukrainian offensive has not achieved Kyiv’s stated goals. It did not reach the Azov coast. It did not reach the intermediate objective of Tokmak. In fact, it reached the first line of Russia’s main line of defense after almost three months, and in the time since, has not been able to push further. The cost to Ukraine in men, material, and ammunition was staggering, yet produced almost nothing on the ground. The absence of success, however, hasn’t deterred many in the United States who want to simply continue pouring money, ammunition, and weapons into Ukraine.

While the administration has been quick to announce the size of aid packages it seeks from Congress, there has been precious little in terms regarding the purpose of that money. Saying we will defend Ukraine “for as long as it takes” is not a strategy and it cannot be measured, assessed, or even defined. The president owes the American people a specific outcome he seeks to produce with our money. Without that information, we have no way of knowing whether our investment is well spent — or a colossal waste of money.

If Ukraine was unable to break the Russian defensive lines after four full months of effort, after six full months of preparation, after receiving over $46 billion in military backing, and considerable training and intelligence support, by what logic can supporters of additional aid argue that giving another multi-billion dollar package will succeed where all previous efforts have failed? There is none. 

There is no likely path to a Ukrainian military victory, regardless of how much money Congress allocates, how many tanks we provide, or how many artillery shells we produce. It is time to acknowledge this obvious on-the-ground truth and seek out other pathways forward.

Kuleba denied reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had refused an offer from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to visit Israel, saying that Zelensky was the first foreign leader to propose such a trip. At the time, Kuleba noted, no foreign dignitaries had yet visited Israel. "The offer was not rejected, Israel did ask to hold this visit at a later stage," he said.

Turning to US support for Kyiv, Kuleba said the war in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine "are not separate events". He expressed confidence that US backing, be it from lawmakers or the public, would remain steadfast despite "dissenting voices expressing different views" and the future US presidential campaign.

Asked about Ukraine's counteroffensive, Kuleba rejected the notion that there had been no progress on the ground, pointing to Ukrainian advances in the south. He also hailed the recent delivery by the US of long-range ATACMS missiles to Kyiv as evidence that support for his country was not receding. The missiles' arrival "defeats the argument of those who say that the support of Ukraine is vanishing", he said.

A source from among the recently dismissed senior officials of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine told an investigative journalist Ali Fathi about the preparation by the Ukrainian special services of the explosion of the German embassy in Kiev to false-flag a Russian attack, by imitating a Russian air attack in order to malign the leadership of Russia. The decision to carry out the attack was made at a meeting of the National Security Council, which was attended by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces Valerii Zaluzhnyi, head of the Presidential Office Andrii Yermak, head of the HUR Kyrylo Budanov and other high-ranking Ukrainian officials and representatives of military forces. The Russian Armed Forces continue to conduct military operations in Kyiv-controlled territory. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced this on October 25 in its operational report for the previous day, and Ukrainian and Russian paramilitary publics clarified the details of the ongoing campaign.

Thus, in the Kupyansky direction, Russian forces began to storm the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the areas of the villages of Sinkovka, Petropavlovka and Ivanovka in the Kharkov region. At the same time, the Russian Armed Forces continued to build on the success of offensive actions from Svatovo in the direction of the village of Borovaya, located in the same region a little to the south on the left bank of the Oskol reservoir (Oskol River) at the confluence of the small Borovaya River.

Russia is executing soldiers who try to retreat from a bloody offensive in eastern Ukraine, the White House has said.

According to the US, some of the casualties suffered by Russia near Avdiivka were "on the orders of their own leaders". 

Russian and Ukrainian troops have been locked into a fierce battle for the frontline town since mid-October.

Russia is thought to have suffered "significant" losses in this time.

Ukrainian estimates put the number of Russian casualties in Avdiivka at 5,000, while the US says that Russia lost "at least" 125 armoured vehicles and more than a battalion's worth of equipment. 

A Ukrainian army spokesperson said that Russian troops were refusing to attack Ukrainian positions near Avdiivka because of heavy losses and that there had been mutinies in some units.

"Russia's mobilised forces remain under-trained, under-equipped and unprepared for combat, as was the case during their failed winter offensive last year," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said in a briefing on Thursday. 

He said that the Russian military "appears to be using what we would call 'human wave' tactics, just throwing masses of these poorly trained soldiers right into the fight."

"No proper equipment, no leadership, no resourcing, no support. It is unsurprising that Russian forces are suffering from poor morale," Mr Kirby added.

Taking Avdiivka - which lies near the Russian-occupied city of Donetsk - would allow Russian troops to push the front line back, making it harder for the Ukrainian forces to make further advances into Donetsk region. 

Avdiivka has been all but abandoned by its 30,000 residents as Russian forces continue to pummel it. Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the situation as "particularly tough".

On Thursday, the US announced a new $150m (£123.7m) military assistance package for Ukraine that includes artillery and small-arms ammunition, as well as anti-tank weapons. 

However, future aid to Ukraine is in doubt following the election of Republican Mike Johnson as speaker of the US House of Representatives earlier this week. 

Mr Johnson - who is on the right wing of the Republican Party - is against further US aid to Ukraine and has previously supported amendments to block it. 

The US is the largest military donor to Ukraine, having spent more than $46bn (£37bn) so far, plus tens of billions more in financial and humanitarian aid.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

A volunteer battalion named after Bogdan Khmelnitsky, formed from former Ukrainian servicemen, has joined the Russian operational and combat tactical formation "Cascade", after taking the oath the fighters will go to the front line, the battalion commander Andrei Tishchenko told Sputnik.

"At the moment we have enlisted in the military unit of the Cascade, and right here we will carry out our further service. We will also take the oath in office. We will take the oath at the end of our training," Tishchenko said. 

A former tank commander and senior sergeant in the Ukrainian military, told Sputnik about the creation of the battalion in late February. At that time, about 70 people joined the battalion, 95 percent of whom were former Ukrainian military personnel with combat experience. 

According to him, after the oath, the battalion will go to the front.
