Divisions Brewing Between Pentagon and White House Over Biden's Ukraine Gamble

 

Western leaders in private conversations cast doubt on Kiev's odds of winning at the Aspen Security Forum despite previously hailing Ukraine's alleged progress on the battlefield, according to the Western press. What's behind the change of heart?
Earl Rasmussen, a retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel and international consultant, told Sputnik that both Western officials and Washington insiders are "somewhat delusional, especially on the political level" when it comes to the Ukraine conflict.
"I think the overall perception is one of disappointment," Rasmussen said. "I think that a lot of the Western and Washington circles are somewhat delusional, especially on the political level. I think the military level knew that the whole adventure here was probably not the best."
"Ukraine was not going to win overall, but I think there was a lot of political pushing and this offensive was geared to break through. I'm not sure on the Pentagon side, but on the political side, I think a lot of them still did not fully realize, they still don't grasp the strength, the strategic position, the resolve on the Russian side, nor do they really understand the cultural issues and a lot of things they don't understand. And they're set on the one path."
Apparently, Team Biden still believes there would be a Ukrainian "breakthrough," and that the Russian military wouldn't be able to resist it, per the US military veteran. He referred to the US mainstream media that had been repeating for months that the Russian military was doomed to lose.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently insisted that Russia "already lost" while speaking to an American broadcaster. Commenting on Blinken's remark, CIA veteran Larry Johnson wrote on his blog on July 23 that "it is alarming that America’s top diplomat is so divorced from reality."

 

Unlike State Department officials, the Pentagon military leadership most likely understands Ukraine is unable to prevail, per Rasmussen.

US defense officials could hardly ignore heavy losses sustained by Ukraine in terms of military equipment and manpower since the beginning of the counteroffensive. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Ukraine has lost 26,000 servicemen, 21 airplanes, five helicopters, some 1,244 Ukrainian tanks and armored vehicles, including 17 Leopard tanks, five French AMX wheeled tanks, 914 units of special vehicles, two air defense systems, and 25 MLRS vehicles.

 

 

"And so there's a shift in thought," Rasmussen said. "I think there's a division in thought processes between the military and the political leadership. But either way, I think everyone is, I would say, disappointed or disillusioned and are actually only now starting to realize this is not going good. And I think they feel trapped in a way."

 

In some respects, this shift in thought has been reflected in the recent reports by US press that, according to the expert, is no longer independent. In fact, some US leaders have realized they've gone down a rabbit hole and are now trying to shape public opinion through the media, the official noted.

"So, the media is actually validating some of the shifting and some of the discussions going on amongst the elite," the retired lieutenant colonel suggested.

 

Team Biden's Ukraine Project Started in Obama Era

At the same time, Rasmussen has drawn attention to the political inertia of Team Biden that has invested a lot in the Ukraine project. Per him, "a lot of this started back" during the Obama administration.

It's the same group of people that's involved in Ukraine, he noted, referring in particular to Blinken, US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland and US national security adviser Jake Sullivan. For instance, Nuland actively participated in events surrounding the February 2014 coup d'etat in Kiev. An intercepted phone conversation in which she disparaged the EU and gave instructions on how to shape the future Ukrainian government stole headlines at the time.

 

 

"This is their lifelong project, their whole career projects and planning for this. And the offensive is a part of it. But it's kind of a last gasp to try to move something forward," Rasmussen said.

 

According to the US military veteran, the Ukrainian counteroffensive is doomed: the Ukrainian military are likely to face heavier losses. However, Team Biden does not care about it, as they are proceeding with their larger geopolitical plan, he noted.

 

Biden Can't Admit Defeat Before Elections

To complicate matters further, the Biden administration cannot admit its defeat in Ukraine before the 2024 election, he continued.

 

 

"No president in a wartime situation has ever lost a reelection," the expert remarked. "So they're hoping that somehow they can garner support to get [US President] Joe Biden across the finish line again. And notice all the opposition within the Democratic Party. [GOP 2024 contender] Robert Kennedy [Jr.], who's opposed to the war here, he's being demonized by the media and the political elite. You've got [former US President] Donald Trump, the counterpart on the other Republican side who's the primary opponent. He's being demonized and has five court cases now thrown against him."

 

"So there you got the Democratic primaries are no longer going to have any debates. It's just not a democracy anymore. Instead, we got free speech being put down, we've got censorship occurring," Rasmussen continued.

 

Dangerous Gambling by Biden Administration

Despite growing national debt and government deficit, the Biden administration is likely to double down on spending because the NATO proxy war in Ukraine benefits the US military industrial complex that contribute immensely to politicians, according to the retired lieutenant colonel.

 

"So they just will not accept the settlement, and will continue to go down," Rasmussen said. "It is like an addicted gambler. He loses a couple of hands, so he doubles down, loses more, he doubles down. 'I'm going to win it eventually.' And that's what it is. They just keep throwing money and money and money. And they're hoping, maybe that's going to at least get us through the election period and we can win the election and maybe then we can look for an off-ramp."

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Monthly production of munitions by Russia's defense industry has exceeded production volumes for entire 2022, Russian Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov said on Monday.

Manturov also said that almost all defense firms are meeting deadlines to implement defense orders.

In Western propaganda on the war in Ukraine, the heavy French media, official and unofficial, with a few exceptions, stand out particularly in their unqualified support for Ukrainian power. In France, the award goes unquestionably to the continuous news channel LCI.

For who wants to know this crazy world where we live, in this fear of a probable 3rd world war, I recommend to follow this chain of information. With them no trace of this obsession. For them it is propaganda, the “Russian bluff”. They rejoice at every escalation in armaments, every step forward towards the abyss. They even laugh about it often, quietly installed on the sets, sometimes watching a video from which the too bloody scenes have been purged for the viewers.

 The Big Guignol

From morning to night, it's on LCI the big guignol, the Spanish inn. There is everything, retired generals, political analysts, specialists of the Slavic world, of Russia and the Soviet world which they cheerfully confuse, Russian defectors, spies, former spies, new ones, people secret services, who-have-just-arrived. There are even former French ambassadors to Russia who come to join the chorus of horror stories about Russia, which is, let's face it, very inelegant for people who have been accredited in this country. But times are tough, and pensions seem insufficient.

All of them on set are declared “specialists”, and when they are not, they are called “editorialists”. They are all competent and their competence is, moreover, interchangeable: the ambassador speaks of military art, the soldier speaks of diplomacy, politics and even economics, the political columnist speaks of military strategy and the quality of armaments.

In the particularly tasty sequences, there is the classic of the defector freshly arrived from Russia. It's amazing how quickly they learned French, like this Russian State TV presenter who, one day, we remember, in the middle of Russian television news, brandished an anti-war card to strangely reappear, suddenly, a few weeks later, on the sets of LCI. Not very talkative, she will also suddenly disappear.

The defectors are pressed with questions. We want to see them confirm certain themes of Western propaganda, for example that Russian opinion is against the war, but that it cannot express itself, that there are flaws, cracks which appear in the regime of Putin, that he is at the end of his race. Nevertheless, we sometimes sense some reluctance among some of these dissidents to go in the direction requested. These will no longer be invited.

 These old ladies who give the shivers 

Another tasty sequence, and regularly scheduled, is that of these ladies of a certain age, said to be specialists in Russia for having lived there, like this Mrs. Galia Ackermann, who arrived in France a long time ago, in 1984 after a detour via Israel from 1973 to 1984. She alternated on the LCI set with another old lady, Helene Blanc, presented as a political scientist specializing in Russia and the USSR. These two ladies seem straight out of an Agatha Christie novel. They spout in a monotone horrors on the Russians and Russia, to freeze your blood. An endless flow. “Assassinations, mafia, poisonings”. Their hatred of Russia is fascinating. Helene Blanc is co-author with Renata Lesnik of works with charming titles:The Corrupt Empire» (1990), "Who will kill Yeltsin? (1992), "The Empire of all mafias», (1996), “The black file of the Russian mafias», (1998), “The Russian Evil: From Chaos to Hope», (2000). His latest book:Goodbye Putin. From KGB to war crimes» (March 2023). This is to say his absence of bias. Renata Lesnik, has, moreover, signed alone, a book entitled "Married to the KGB,” (2010). A Russian refugee in France since 1981, she died there in 2013. They are both criminologists. Enough to make shivers run on the set in his daily story about Russia.

The other lady, Gallia Ackerman is not to be outdone: she is the co-author of a book, just as charming, entitled, "Vladimir Putin's Black Book".

 The board generals

But the highlight of the show is undeniably the soldiers, the retired generals who appeared on the sets this year. They are also called "the plateau generals". They are there so often and for so long, at all hours, that one wonders if they are not camping there. It seems that they are paid by attendance fees and by the duration, and that we jostle at the gate. In fact, there are more and more of them. They even intervene from home by Skype. Their military experience is that of interventions "for freedom and democracy" and "the liberation of peoples from horrible dictators»: Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Mali. For almost all NATO interventions, and we will say later that NATO is a defensive organization. Sometimes carried away by nostalgia for the "good old days", they confess their feats of arms. In fact, all their military combat experience is reduced to these, those of low-risk interventions. Nothing to do with a high intensity war like the war in Ukraine, and an adversary like Russia. That is to say the limit of their military expertise. They are wrong almost regularly. They slipped little by little, apart from a few rare laudable exceptions, into a role of pure propagandist which certainly harms the image of the French army: the Ukrainian army is adorned with all the qualities, "respect for the soldier, concern for human losses, patriotic spirit, courage, creativity” “acquisition of NATO standards”, “assimilation of Western rationality, modernity" etc. The Russian army is the absolute counter-example: "incompetent officers, disorganization, contempt for the life of the soldier considered as cannon fodder, "Soviet" heaviness, widespread corruption, enormous losses of men and material, alcoholic soldiers, deserters, they are shot in the back when they retreat in battle etc.. "

 Generals wage war… information 

On the set, these generals may end up believing that they are waging war, that they have returned to service since it is, as they repeat, moreover, dazzled by their new visibility, above all a war of the 'information. Yes, but there remains the essential criterion: the result on the ground, and there often it flounders and the explanations confuse.

Appetite coming with eating, our plateau generals have slipped little by little from propaganda to politics, and even to geopolitics, giving their opinion on everything: on “power struggles in Russia», on the Russian economy, on the BRICS, China, India, the G20, the G7, the international upheavals in progress, the European Union... They take a liking to it as if they had always dreamed of this synthesis of the military and the political. These retired generals, who often occupied high positions, obviously keep strong ties with their colleagues, and this war in Ukraine could have unexpected consequences on the politicization of Western armies. We can note, at the same time, through their interventions, and in broad daylight now, to what extent the American army has penetrated the Western armies. From time to time, however, some Gaullist nationalist accents emerge, but these are rare on the sets and obviously prefer not to expose their image.

In all this, extraordinary thing, we hardly speak of Ukraine. We only talk about Russia, and even only about Putin, whose every act and gesture we watch. The channel has a permanent correspondent in Moscow but not in kyiv. Are we really interested in Ukraine in this war? Yet we would have liked to know what daily life is like in Ukraine, the economic, social, cultural life, the standard of living, the unemployment rate, to have an overview of the debates in the Ukrainian National Assembly, of the parties; the exchange rate of the Ukrainian currency, We never have images from Ukrainian TV but we do from Russian TV. Let's not even talk about the Ukrainian losses on which there is absolute silence, which clearly indicates that there is a serious problem there.

 A jellyfish  

The climax of this day on LCI is the late-night show: “Éric Brunet et compagnie”. Then there is delirium. The animator continually lives in an anachronistic, virtual world, somewhere between the USSR and Russia, and he drags his whole merry stage team there for whom this war is a continual source of jokes, each more wacky than the other. We make thunderous and emphatic political statements where we say "that there should have been a Nuremberg trial for Soviet crimes, which would have avoided the current situation". A Russian defector, who came out Western a few years ago, sports on set messy, shaggy hair like the mythical Medusa, one of the Gorgons. His resentment for his homeland has something captivating in its restrained and cold violence. She compels herself every day to give on the set the most information or more exactly precise information on her country, on the power in Russia, on its functioning, etc. She alternates her information with quotations from Tolstoy, Gogol , Dostoyevsky, as if to say that she has remained true to her roots and so appeases her seemingly tormented soul.

Things often get out of hand on set like this Franco-Ukrainian, Alla Poedie, who has been in France for 30 years since Ukraine's independence, who boasts of having worked with Gorbachev, but who did not hesitate to say, a day on the set of LCI, that "the Russians were rats and cockroaches that had to be crushedwithout anyone reacting. Besides, she often admonishes on the set those who seem to her a little too shy, a little too nuanced in their judgments on this war. "Are you with Putin or with us?", without anyone daring to rebel, just a weak "you misunderstood me". She goes so far as to call the French "cowards". Correcting certain speakers is also what the Franco-Ukrainian women who are distributed in a network on other platforms do, each relaying information from the Ukrainian services, what they don't even hide. The host, Éric Brunet, treated the evening of July 14 as "députaillons" the French deputies who expressed reservations about the supply by France of long-range missiles, without there being at least a debate in The national assembly. We can't even imagine here that someone can express a different opinion, even nuanced, on Russia. We are indeed faced with a totalitarian information system. But such a dictatorship can only be paid sooner or later by a loss of the sense of reality.

 The bacchanal of the end 

The LCI information day regularly ends in a kind of media bacchanalia. Most of the time it's a contest of quips, insults, mockery, dubious jokes about Putin that give rise to big laughs, derogatory remarks about everything, his gait, his smile, his walkabouts that we immediately declare arranged, his doubles (in the era of facial recognition!), his fatal chronic illnesses, his past and future crimes, he is called "little thug from Saint Petersburg", of coward terrorized by the disease, of "godfather at the head of a mafia state" etc. In which other country have we seen a head of state treated by a quasi-official television channel in this way? And this is the head of a thousand-year-old historic state, the largest state in the world. To do so is to renounce all plans for peace dialogue. It's insane..

The current French media system ended up giving birth to a media monstrosity such as LCI. It should indeed be noted that LCI is the only Western television media to be devoted exclusively to the war in Ukraine.

There is something terribly unhealthy in all of this. Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, it's actually the same story, the same themes repeated a hundred times: Russian aggression, Russian war crimes, Russian lies, Russians shooting themselves in the foot by destroying their own gas pipeline, by sabotaging the Kakhovka dam, which supplies them with water in the Crimea, by bombing themselves on the Zaporijia power station, by organizing for dark reasons attacks against Russian intellectuals who are nevertheless nationalists, Russian barbarism , an army in disarray. And yet this Russian army has reinforced its positions so far.

Of these recurring stories, served in a loop, H24, there remains in the long run an impression of weariness, disgust, infinite sadness. One wonders if the relays of this propaganda on the sets will thus be able to maintain their sanity for a long time.

The existence of a debate, compliance with information standards is essential to the quality of information. LCI and other Western media are experiencing an untenable editorialist contradiction. They proclaim that they are not at war with Russia and yet they must wage a ferocious information war against it, a war without any rules, without any professional ethics. On the other hand, on the war in Ukraine, the situation in the non-Western world is quite different, more balanced. He is in no way involved in this involvement, military and economic, of the West in the conflict in Ukraine. On this conflict, the quality, the objectivity of its information are affected and it is non-Western information which now sets an example for the West in terms of information ethics.

 Too much propaganda kills propaganda.

The western world has finally lost the information war. Too much propaganda kills propaganda. The rest of the world has become totally off-putting to Western information. He came to reject it globally and in detail. Everything that comes from the West in this regard seems suspect to him. The Western media system is thus reduced to trying to keep an influence on Western opinion, but even there the game seems to be starting to be lost if we consider what is happening to the alternative media system.

A gigantic change has taken place in recent years, and particularly since the conflict in Ukraine or was revealed during this conflict: barely a few years ago, the dominant paradigms were still Western. They are those who had dominated Western interventionism from Iraq to Libya: war against terrorism, export of democracy, struggles against Islamism, dangers of emigration, etc. Today, this time so near now seems strangely far away. The West, and its most realistic defenders, are trying to regain control by acknowledging, still weakly but acknowledging all the same, its past wrongs, its policy of double standards, its crimes against humanity in recent decades and ultimately, step by step, all those committed over the centuries, during its crushing hegemony over the world. This results in another balance of power to the detriment of the West in terms of information as in other areas. .

In fact everything hangs together, it is a loss of overall credibility. The Westernist universalist claim has fizzled out. In all international bodies, theoretically with a global vocation, the Western dictatorship has cracked the universalist veneer. 8:04am: Kremlin may no longer be funding Wagner Group, says UK

The UK's defence ministry said on Sunday there was a realistic possibility that Russia no longer funds the activities of the mercenary Wagner Group.

London reported that the Russian state has taken action against some of the business interests of Wagner owner Yevgeny Prigozhin after he led a failed mutiny against the Russian army's top brass in June.

"If the Russian state no longer pays Wagner, the second most plausible paymasters are the Belarusian authorities," it said, adding that this would be a drain on Belarus' resources.

The ministry said the Wagner Group was moving towards downsizing and reconfiguring to save on staff salary expenses at a time of financial pressure.

The head of the Wagner Private Military Company, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was listed among passengers scheduled to fly on a private jet which crashed on Wednesday in Russia’s Tver Region, Rosaviation has confirmed.  

The Russian Emergencies Ministry said all 10 people on board private jet, traveling from Moscow to St. Petersburg, had died.

“The Embraer plane was flying out of Sheremetyevo to St. Petersburg. There were three crew and seven passengers on board. They all died,” an official told TASS.

The crash happened near the village of Kuzhenkino in the northwestern Tver Region. Some Russian outlets have identified the plane as an Embraer Legacy 600, with the tail number RA-02795, which is believed to belong to Prigozhin. However, this was not confirmed by officials.

An Embraer Legacy business jet with three crew members and seven passengers aboard crashed in Russia's Tver Region while en route to St. Petersburg from Moscow earlier on Wednesday.
PMC Wagner boss and businessman Evgeny Prigozhin was aboard the aircraft that crashed Wednesday near a village about 300 kilometers away from Moscow, according to the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency.
According to the information released by the government agency, the plane was carrying the following passengers: Evgeny Prigozhin, Evgeny Markaryan, Aleksandr Totmin, Valery Chekalov, Dmitry Utkin, Sergey Propustin and Nikolay Matuseev.
The plane's three crew members were comamnder Aleksei Levshin, co-pilot Rustam Karimov and flight attendant Kristina Raspopova.
