The US and its allies should seize the opportunity to sanction and prosecute the Wagner private military company in the wake of the aborted mutiny by its chief, Evgeny Prigozhin, according to two American celebrity activists.

The call was made on Monday by actor George Clooney and author John Prendergast, who also served on the National Security Council under President Bill Clinton. They said there was an “unprecedented opportunity to counter” Russia’s influence in Africa by going after Wagner.

In a column they wrote for The Economist magazine, Clooney and Prendergast described the private military company as one of Moscow’s “most successful foreign-policy initiatives during the past decade” and an “atrocity.”

Wagner has been offering security services to some governments in Africa. The celebrities claimed the group was “protecting the regime [in the Central African Republic] in exchange for mineral concessions” and a way to “hijack a government.” They promoted a report on Wagner’s activities released by their NGO, The Sentry, which alleged that the group “seeks to disable multinational predatory networks.”

Evgeny Prigozhin led a brief mutiny in Russia last month, moving some of the group’s forces from Ukraine towards Russian cities. The maneuver was aborted after a deal was struck with the government, which offered him exemption from prosecution in exchange for going into de facto exile.

Clooney and Prendergast believe that the Wagner Group’s presence in Africa, which they described as a “virus,” will continue. However, the transition period can be used by Western nations to “take action against both the operation and its originator.”

“They should create an ad hoc coalition aimed at dismantling the group’s business empire, building on lessons from similar efforts focused on Islamic State and Al-Qaeda,” they suggested.

Islamic State emerged in the mid-2010s amid chaos in Iraq and Syria. Iraq had been occupied by a US-led coalition a decade earlier. Syria was hit by Western-supported anti-government protests in 2011, which quickly escalated into a civil war. Some of Washington’s closest regional allies, such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE, reportedly supplied arms to anti-Damascus groups, as did the CIA.

Al-Qaeda stemmed from the US-backed campaign to support anti-Soviet insurgency in Afghanistan in the 1980s. While Washington considers it a terrorist organization, in 2012 Jake Sullivan infamously celebrated the fact that it was “on our side” in Syria, according to leaked US diplomatic cables. The incumbent national security adviser to US President Joe Biden was serving in Hillary Clinton’s Department of State at the time.

NOTE OF THE CARTOONIST: RUNNING OUT OF TIME (BEING LAZY) I USED THE FACE OF JOE BIDEN AND THAT OF HIS COCAINE ADDICTED SON AS THE BASES FOR THE FACES. TO SOME EXTEND, DESPITE BOTH BEING DECENT MEN, CLOONEY AND PRENDERGAST SHOW THEY ARE IDIOTS BY SUPPORTING A DECREPIT DECEITFUL AMERICAN ADMINISTRATION... AS THEY SAY IN THE BUSH: THEY UNDERSTAND SHIT (NOTHING).....

So… Tucker Just ENDED THE UKRAINE WAR DEBATE!!

As Tucker Carlson spars with former Vice President Mike Pence over the war in Ukraine, both Democrat and Republican Senators Agree that NATO Expansion Into Asia Is ‘Inevitable’. So, how has the playbook that the pimps of war use to lure us into one military fiasco after another worked again? And how has the U.S. public has been conned, once more, into pouring billions into another endless war?

solidarity....

Hollywood megastar George Clooney has come out in support of SAG-AFTRA and its 160,000-strong membership as the performers union takes to picket lines.

“This is an inflection point in our industry,” Clooney said in a short statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

“For our industry to survive that has to change. For actors, that journey starts now,” he added as the actors union goes on strike after failing to reach a new deal with studios and streamers.

SAG-AFTRA members join Writers Guild of America members, on strike since early May, in the first double strike in Hollywood since 1960, which looks to largely shut down the film and TV business.

Clooney in his statement added “actors and writers in large numbers have lost their ability to make a living.”

The Oscar-winning actor, director and producer broke through with his role in NBC’s hit TV series ER before appearing in such films as Out of Sight; O Brother, Where Art Thou?; the Ocean’s franchise; Syriana; Michael Clayton; Up in the Air; The Descendants; Gravity; and Ticket to Paradise.

His work as a director includes Confessions of a Dangerous MindGood Night, and Good Luck; and The Tender Bar as well as The Ides of March, Monuments Men, Suburbicon and The Midnight Sky, acting and writing the latter four.

Leonardo DiCaprio also took to social media to express his support for the actors strike, writing on his Instagram Story, “I stand in solidarity with my Guild.”

annoying the UK.....

The UK government has been sharply criticised by the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee (FAC) for under-estimating the dangerous growth of Russia's Wagner mercenary group.

In a scathing report, the cross-party committee of MPs accused the government of what it called "a dismal lack of understanding" of Wagner's activities in Africa.

"We are deeply concerned by the government's dismal lack of understanding of Wagner's hold beyond Europe, in particular their grip on African states," says the Committee's chair, Alicia Kearns MP.

Meaning what, exactly?

The report itemises seven states where Wagner's military activity has been detected: Ukraine, Syria, the Central African Republic (CAR), Sudan, Libya, Mozambique and Mali.

Wagner has developed a highly successful and profitable business model in these countries, enriching itself and its client rulers, mostly at the expense of the local population.

The committee, which for the first time has commissioned open-source investigative research for its 82-page report, asserts that for 10 years the British government has "under-played and under-estimated the Wagner Network's activities, as well as the security implications for Europe".

This topic has become all the more relevant this week as somewhere between 3000-10,000 Wagner mercenary fighters have set up base in Belarus while rhetorically announcing their desire to make a cross-border raid into Poland, a Nato state.

The FAC report has used evidence provided by a well-placed and senior Wagner source, a "defector", who revealed that his organisation had boasted of teaching local police authorities in the CAR how to torture civilian captives.

The Wagner Group is accused of murdering hundreds of civilians in that country while helping to prop up the regime that pays their salaries.

Mali is a prime example of a country where the Wagner Group has successfully supplanted Western, French-led forces, while ingratiating itself with an autocratic government that recently seized power.

"Where the West moves out, Wagner moves in, seeing opportunity in suffering and profit in chaos," says the report.

"The UK must provide an alternative for countries that are struggling', it adds. "It is a foreign policy goal of the Kremlin to force failing states to rely on the Wagner network."
